NOTES

If you’re not sure how to carry out one of the Soundbeam procedures, try out

the relevant example here, in conjunction with The Soundbeam 2 Handbook

Part 3 “Explanations”, then adapt it to your own particular needs.

The numbers and pages of the relevant sections of Part 3 are quoted in

brackets, at the head of each section.

Use the Glossary (Soundbeam 2 Handbook Part 3 pp 113-129) to find the

meaning of any technical term you don’t understand.

With the exception of 2.2 To Set up a MIDI Control Chain and 3.2. To Select,

Name, Record, Replay, Edit and Save a User Pitch Sequence, the individual

step-by-step processes described here are not in any purposeful sequence - ie. the end

of one process does not necessarily become the starting point of the next one.

SOUNDBEAM is a Registered Trademark throughout Europe and the USA.

1.2. To Save a Set-up

This is used if you want to preserve the alterations you have made to settings of

a User Set-up.

So, starting from whichever Set-up (say, Set-up No 47) and Sensor (say,

Beam 1) you have selected, and the key page* for the default settings you wish

to change (say, Divisions), the screen will show, say -

*The key page is the screen page shown when one of the keys is pressed,

or the page subsequently reached when the Page Left or Page Right Keys

are used.

Press and

hold down Enter

The screen will show

Note. The “M” after the Set-up number shows that some of the Set-up’s

settings have been modified, but not yet Saved - and are thus liable to be lost

and replaced by the original default settings if another Set-up is selected and

Enter is pressed or Soundbeam is switched off

PART 2 “STEP BY STEP” - 1.3. TO COPY THE MODIFIED SETTINGS OF A LOCKED SET-UP TO A USER DEFINABLE SET-UP 11

1.3. To Copy the Modified Settings of a Locked Set-up to a User Set-up

Perhaps you have been using a Locked Set-up during your current

Soundbeam session, and have made a number of changes to the settings -

for Sensor, Pitch Sequence, Range and so on - to suit your purpose.

You would now like to preserve this modified Set-up - the default Set-up

No. 001 “Echoes”, perhaps, but with the changes to settings you have

made - for re-use at a later date. But the Set-up you have chosen is one of

the 30 Locked Set-ups (Nos 001-030), which will revert to their Locked

default settings if another Set-up is entered, or whenever Soundbeam is

switched off and then powered up again.

To preserve the altered settings of your current Locked Set-up, you will

need to copy the whole Set-up (with the modified settings) to one of the

User Set-ups (Nos 031-128).

So, once again, start from the last key page of the Locked Set-up (in this case

Set-up No 001 “Echoes”) and Sensor (Beam 1), in which you have

modified the settings - say, Transpose -

when the display might show, say

Press Enter

and hold down

Warning. After modifying a default setting, be careful not to press Set-up

before pressing Enter - since pressing Set-up first and then pressing Enter will

cause all the modifications you have made to be lost and replaced by the original

default settings.

by pressing Sensor.

In this case, the Display will show

Use the Rotary Control Wheel to select another Sensor - one of the other 3

parameter settings you wish to change - say Beam No. 2

The Display will now show

From now on - until a new Sensor is selected, all changes of settings within the

current Set-up, or any subsequent change of Set-up - for Pitch Sequence,

Range (4 Beams only - not Switches), Divisions, Trigger Mode,

Transpose, and MIDI Utilities - will be for those assigned to Beam No. 2.

NB. Don’t forget to check that the Sensor you have selected is actually

plugged in – Beams 1, 2, 3 or 4 into Soundbeam’s rear panel, Switches 1

to 8 into the Switchbox, which must also be connected to the Controller.

2.2. To Set up a MIDI Control Chain

In this example, one of Soundbeam’s two MIDI Control Chains is used to

cause the sound to move between the listener’s Left and Right (its “Pan

Position”) depending on the distance (Absolute Length) from the Sensor of

any interruption of the Beam.

(NB. Check that the Left and Right signal OUTPUTS from your MIDI musical

instrument and your amplifier are correctly connected to the Left and Right

INPUTS to your amplifier and speakers.)

(For a full explanation of Soundbeams’s MIDI Control Chains A and B see -

Handbook Part 3 “Explanations” 6.3. MIDI Control Chains A and B -

pp. 55-58).

Four settings are needed to operate a MIDI Control Chain, and the

proceedures for these are described consecutively in 2.2.1., 2.2.2., 2.2.3.,

and 2.2.4. below

2.2.1. To Assign a Control Source to MIDI Control Chain A

Start from any key page of any Set-up and Sensor - say Set-up No. 001

“Echoes” and Beam 1 -

by pressing

Sensor

The Display will show

PART 2 “STEP BY STEP” - 2.2. TO SET UP A MIDI CONTROL CHAIN 23

The Display will show

The top line of the Display indicates

a. the Sensor from which control information is to be derived - and

b. which of the two MIDI Control Chains (A or B) is selected for this purpose.

The second line indicates which type of information from the Sensor is being

used as the Control Source – in this case the default is Gate (See Handbook

Part 3 “Explanations” 6.3.3. Sources of Control Information p 57)

Now use the Rotary Control Wheel to select the desired Control Source –

in this case, say, Abs Length

again

This time, the second line of the Display shows the current destination of

the MIDI Control Chain information – the function it will be used to affect –

selected from the possibilities offered by turning the Rotary Control Wheel.

In this case the default assignment is No Controller. (See Handbook Part 3

“Explanations” 6.3.4. MIDI Controllers and 6.3.5. Expressive

Modifications not listed as MIDI Controllers p. 58)

Now use the Rotary Control Wheel to select the desired destination for

2.2.3. To Assign a Control Depth setting to MIDI Control Chain A

In order to define the extent of the variation in the Pan Position between

Left and Right - under the control of Absolute Length - we might set

the Control Depth to about half its full potential.

(See Handbook Part 3 “Explanations” 6.3.2. Control Chain Settings

iii. Control Depth p. 56)

So, from the last screen,

press

The Display will show the

default setting

This setting, 001 (variable between Off and +/- 100) means that controlling

the Pan Position from Absolute Length will have practically no effect at

all. So use the Rotary Control Wheel to increase the setting to, say, + 064.

PART 2 “STEP BY STEP” - 2.2. TO SET UP A MIDI CONTROL CHAIN 27

Finally...2.2.4. To Assign a Minimum Control setting

to MIDI Control Chain A

The Control Minimum sets the minimum value that MIDI Control Chain A

can impose on the MIDI function currently selected as the Control

Destination. A Control Minimum setting of 000 allows movements in the

Beam to select from the whole range of 128 possible values for the MIDI

function under control. As the Control Minimum setting increases, the smaller

the spread of possible values becomes, until finally, a Control Minimum setting

of 127 allows only a single value for the Control Destination.

(See Handbook Part 3 “Explanations” 6.3.2. Control Chain Settings iv.

Control Minimum p. 56)

Press

Note. With these settings for MIDI Control Chain A, the nearer the

interruptions of the Beam is to the Sensor, the further to the right (of the

facing listener) the sounds will be - and vice versa.

To reverse this effect, it is simply necessary to invert the settings for Control

Depth (from +064 to -064) and move the Control Minimum from 000 to

a high number, say, 100.

Now, any interruption of the Beam moving nearer to the Sensor causes the

sounds to be heard moving further to the left.

3.2.4. To Record the Notes of Pitch SequenceNo. 040 “Scottish Fiddler”

A Pitch Sequence consists of up to 64 single notes or 2-, 3- or 4-part chords -

or a mixture of both. The example, “Scottish Fiddler”, has 22 note/chords,

and is given in here in musical notation.

Divisions. Each of the notes or chords of a Pitch Sequence is assigned to one

of the (up to) 64 equal Divisions into which the length (Range) of each Beam

can be divided - ie. up to 64 ‘slots’ to each of which one of the note/chords of a

Pitch Sequence can be assigned. (See Handbook Part 3 “Explanations” -

The simplest way of recording the note/chords of a new Pitch Sequence is by

using “Record Division” (accessed via the Pitch Sequence key) to play them

into the Soundbeam Controller from a MIDI Keyboard. For this, you will need

to connect MIDI Lead B - supplied with all Soundbeam 2 Kits - between the

keyboard’s MIDI Out socket and Soundbeam Controller’s MIDI In socket.

Note. The names of the notes - A 2, C#5, Eb3 and so on - are used in

accordance with the current international convention. However, in

Soundbeam 2’s screen displays, all accidentals - ie.notes with added sharps

(#) or flats (b) which denote the raising or lowering of the pitch by one

semitone - are written as sharps (#) of the next note below.

Note. A succession of either Page Right or Page Left key presses gives access to acontinuous circle of Key Pages. The total of 5 consecutive presses of Page Rightused in this example to reach Record Division would if starting from PitchSequence Select, be replaced by the more direct 2 presses of Page Left.

The Display shows

with the single MIDI note 024 (C 0). This is Division 01 of the 64 Divisions ofUser Pitch Sequence No. 017 “Chromatic Scale” - the default PitchSequence assigned in the factory to all User Set-ups. This is now about to bereplaced by the MIDI Note Nos of the new Pitch Sequence. Note the cursorunder the Division No.

Note. If the Pitch Sequence you are replacing with the new one is a User PitchSequence (Nos 031 - 100), make sure that this is not the only copy - or, if it is,that you are content to lose it (or the current version of it) from your “library” ofavailable Pitch Sequences. Using Record Division, the first note you enter fromthe MIDI keyboard deletes all the subsequent Divisions of the previous PitchSequence, together with their matching note/chords.

Any alteration you make to a User Pitch Sequence applies immediatelyto the original in the ‘library’ - and to all copies of it assigned to anySensor in any Set-up.

So now use your MIDI keyboard to play 1, 2, 3 or, as in this for example, 4 notes

into Division 01 of the new Pitch Sequence - simultaneously, if you are a

reasonably accomplished keyboard player, otherwise, one by one, starting with

the lowest note and holding it down as you add (and hold down) each of the 2, 3

or 4 subsequent ones. They will replace the note(s) assigned to this Division by

the previous Pitch Sequence.

When you play one or more notes on the keyboard - for as long as you

hold these keys down - the Display will show the names of the notes you

are playing.

Note. If the notes of a chord are ‘spread’ - ie. played nearly but not quite

simultaneously - the screen will show the names of the notes in the order in which

they were played. This will make no difference to the sound of the chord.

This time, Division 02’s 4 spaces will be blank - ready to accept your

At any point in the Pitch Sequence recording process described in the

previous section, you may wish to hear what you have done so far, in order to

get some idea of how successfully you are realising your intentions.

And finally, when the whole of the new Pitch Sequence has been entered

using the Record Division page, you will want to listen carefully to what you

have recorded, to judge whether it’s as you intended - or whether it might be

improved in any way.

orc. only a few small alterations are needed - so you can use a combination

of Delete Division, Insert Division and Record Division to put matters right,as in the following example.

Minor Alterations to the New Pitch Sequence

In this example, let us suppose that when the new Pitch Sequence is replayed,it turns out that the following minor alterations are needed.

i. An extra Division - Division No. 13 - with the note A 3 assigned to it, has been recorded by mistake (easy to do using a MIDI keyboard), giving a totalnumber of 23 note/chords assigned to 23 Divisions instead of the originallyintended 22, and must be deleted.

ii. One of the notes of the chord assigned to Division 15 needs to be changed

And, finally, the new sequence could be improved by the insertion of a chordafter Division 4 - so

3.2.7. To Alter notes assigned to a Pitch Sequence Division

An alternative method for defining the individual note/chords of a Pitch

Sequence uses Record Division with the Rotary Control Wheel, Enter,

Page Right and Page Left to define the pitches one by one. More accurate

and less accident prone than using a MIDI keyboard – though rather more

cumbersome - it will be used here and in section 3.2.9. To Assign a Note or

Alteration III. Add a new Division No 5 to the 22note Pitch Sequence No. 40

3.2.8. To Insert a Division into a PitchSequence

In order to insert a new Division into a Pitch Sequence, the Division No

selected for this procedure should be the one the new insert will displace.

In this case, selecting Division No. 05 means that a new Division No. 5 will be

inserted between the present Division No. 05 and No. 04. The present

Division No. 05 will then be moved forward in the current Pitch Sequence

with the note/chord assigned to it - to become Division No. 06. The notes of

the previous Division No. 05 (now No. 06) will be copied in the new No. 05.

NB. Since the maximum number of note/chords which can be Saved in a Pitch

Sequence is 64, a Pitch Sequence which already contains 64 note/chords will be

unable to accept the insertion of any more Divisions.

The “M” after the Set-up number means that the Set-up has been modified in

some way, but that this modified Set-up has not been Saved. It warns the user

that when Soundbeam is switched off, the modification(s) will be lost.

The modification referred to in this case is the assignment of Pitch Sequence

No. 040 “Scottish Fiddler” - Beam 1 to Set-up No. 001 “Echoes” in place

of the original default Locked Pitch Sequence No. 005 “Major Triad + 6th”

Because Set-up No. 001 “Echoes” - is one of the 30 Locked Set-ups (Nos 001

- 030), the next time Soundbeam is switched off and then powered up again,

Pitch Sequence No. 040 “Scottish Fiddler” will have been replaced by the

default Locked Pitch Sequence No. 005 “Major Triad + 6th” as the Pitch

Sequence assigned to Beam 1 in this Set-up.

However, the newly defined User Pitch Sequence No. 040 “Scottish

Fiddler” will still be in your Soundbeam Controller’s “library” of 100 Pitch

Sequences, and available for temporary or default assignment to any - or all -

of the Beams or Switches in any Set-up you might be working with.

It could also now be assigned to a Sensor (Beam or Switch) as part of another

Set-up - for example the User Set-up No. 067 re-named “Jane’s Music Box”

in the example shown above in 1. SET-UPS. “To Re-name a User Set-up

(pp. 14-18).

With the Range of each of the 4 Beams now locked to “Set-up”, the current

Range settings for each Beam will revert - at each subsequent change of Set-

up - to the various default Range settings prescribed in them. This setting -

“Range Lock to Set-up” - now becomes the default, and will persist even

when Soundbeam 2 is switched off and then switched on again.

5.1. To Change a Divisions Setting

In Soundbeam 2, the length (Range) of each of the Beams can be divided into

from 1 to 64 equal Divisions. Each of the 1 to 64 note/chords of the selected

Pitch Sequence is assigned to one of these Divisions.

So, starting from any Key page of any Set-up and Sensor – say, for this

example, Set-up No. 001 “Echoes” and Beam 1 -

press

Divisions

key

The display will show the default Divisions setting for this Set-up and

Beam No.

The default Pitch Sequence assigned to Beam 1 in Set-up No. 001 is Pitch

Sequence No. 005 “Major Triad +6th” which has 64 note/chords. A setting

of 16 Divisions allows only the 16 notes of the Pitch Sequence originally

assigned to the 16 Division Nos. 25 to 40 - C 2 to E 4 - to be articulated by

interruptions of the Beam.

Offset setting

In the 64 note/chord Locked Pitch Sequence No. 005 “Major Triad +6th” - (the

default selection for Beam 1 in Set-up No. 001), the default Divisions setting of

16 allows only the 16 note/chords originally mapped to the 16 Divisions Nos. 25

(C 2) - 40 (E 4) to be played in the Beam .

However, in this case, an added default Divisions Offset of + 08 means that the

whole Pitch Sequence is shifted 8 Divisions along the Beam (towards the Sensor).

This means that it is the 16 Divisions Nos. 33 to 48 and the 16 notes of Pitch

Sequence No. 005 originally assigned to them - C 3 to E 5 - which will be

sounded by interruptions of the Beam.

Use the Rotary Control Wheel to adjust the sequence of 16 Divisions

backward by 12, to a Divisions Offset setting of - 04. Now it is the set of 16

Division Nos. 21 to 36 and the notes of the selected Pitch Sequence

originally assigned to them - C 2 to A 3 - which are sounded by interruptions of

the Beam.

5.2.1. Using Divisions Offset to select one ormore consecutive note/chords of a PitchSequence for articulation byinterruptions of the Beam

The example below - Pitch Sequence No. 040 “Scottish Fiddler” - will help

to show how useful Divisions Offset can be - in conjunction with Divisions No.

- in the selection and modification of different components of a Pitch Sequence

for use in the creation of new Set-ups.

Pitch Sequence No. 040 “Scottish Fiddler” - consists of 22 note/chords in

various melodic and cadential relationships, mapped to Division Nos. 01 to 22.

By reducing the number of Divisions to reflect the number of chords we wish to

hear articulated by movements in the Beam, and using Divisions Offsets of

varying amounts, in either direction, we can now select any single note/chord - or

any sequence of 2, 3, or more consecutive chords from this Pitch Sequence for

articulation by interruptions of the Beam.

6. TRIGGER MODES(See Handbook Part 3 “Explanations” 9. Trigger Modes pp. 85-90)

6.1. To Select a Trigger Mode Setting for a Beam

Trigger Modes are the various ways in which notes are started and stopped

when the Beam is interrupted. There is a fully illustrated explanation of them in

Soundbeam 2 Handbook Part 3 –”Explanations”.

Starting from any page of any Set-up and Sensor – eg, say, Set-up No. 001

“Echoes” and Beam 1 -

press

Trigger Mode

The Display will show the default Trigger Mode setting for this Set-up and

Beam No.

Re-Trigger

Page 97: THE SOUNDBEAM 2 HANDBOOK PART 2 STEP BY STEP · PDF fileTHE SOUNDBEAM® 2 HANDBOOK PART 2 STEP BY STEP ... Echoes Slct Set-up: 001P Echoes ... use the Rotary Control Wheel to select

Re-Trigger Mode allows interruptions of the

Beam, moving towards and away from the Sensor to

articulate a new note for each of the Divisions

of the Beam through which the interruption passes.

Use the Rotary Control Wheel to select a new Trigger Mode - say Gated

Single Shot

Single Shot Mode, on its own, limits the

effect of a single interruption of the Beam

to the triggering of a single note/chord only.

Unlike Re-Trigger Mode, subsequent

movements within the Beam won’t

articulate any further note/chords.

In the Gated version, any note triggered -

provided the MIDI Program No. assigned

to it represents a sustained sound - will be

heard for the length of time set on the Gate

Time page (maximum 6.3 seconds)

regardless of whether the interruption of the

Beam persists or ends. (See next section

p. 98). However, if a new interruption of the

Beam is made before the set Gate Time of

the first note/chord articulated has elapsed,

it will be silenced at once, to be replaced by

the note/chord resulting from the second

interruption.

8. MIDI UTILITIES(See Handbook Part 3 “Explanations” 11. MIDI pp 95-106)

8.1. To Select a MIDI Program No.

MIDI Program Nos denote the 128 various sounds - or ‘voices’ - available in your

MIDI musical instrument. You may already have tried these out in Handbook –

Part 1 “Getting Started” MIDI Utilities Key (pages 38-40). See also list of

instruments in Handbook Part 3 “Explanations” 11.1.10. General MIDI

Sound Set p. 100.
