FROM PASTORI BILL “So what’s new?” is a favorite question of many. You should use it when visiting
the home of an infant. At Elim we are always on the new. From Karen Johnson’s
Ordination to the return of the Mexico Trip remembering service, to the visit of our
next Pastor to the Call Meeting on May 22. New New New. New woven into the
eternal message of God and God’s people.
Elim was new 91 years ago (well outside any of our memory), Pastor Tim was new 39 years ago,
(sorry Tim), and I was new in 2014. If you really want to feel new, tell a story at the preschool on your
birthday and let them give you a special hat and doughnut with sprinkles and sing happy birthday, or
receive a standing ovation thank-you at a church annual meeting. That will new you right up.
If you want new, make something for VBS and show up to see it used. If you want new, volunteer for
the very next thing in the rotation at Elim. Accept an invitation to the bible study or the men’s breakfast
or a circle, bring a potluck dish to the cook out dinner and make them set up a new table. Meet a new
friend at worship, or bring an old friend to your always new church.
Susan and I will be on to a new thing soon, with the memories of all the renewal you have given us.
Think of all the times Elim - an Oasis, a Sanctuary, a resting place - has been exactly that for a day, an
hour, one more time to be refreshed at the font in our baptism, our friendships, our faith, fed and
renewed at our Lord’s Table, heard a familiar scripture new for the first time, prayed for by those who
dance the faith step, sung to by voices whose melody dared us to join in, sent in peace to serve by the
newest among us.
I will say again for the record:
I am having the time of my life. My eye will always twinkle when I tell our stories. (Yes, I will be telling
them and will change names if necessary.)
Embrace and love the new because, as usual, God is with you.
“I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth,
do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.” -Isaiah 43:19
Godspeed Elim.
Peace,
1Interim Pastor, May 2014 - June 2016

ANNOUNCEMENTS
PRESIDENTIAL REPORT
Thank you to everyone who participated in our congregation meetings on May 22! We have issued a
letter of call for our new pastor, which is on its way from our bishop to our selected pastor as we go to
press. We also approved the budget, amended the constitution, and basically got things ready to emerge
from our transition phase during this summer. The congregation also decided to keep Pastor Bill
engaged at Elim until VBS completes on June 19. Great work, everyone! Here are a couple things to
keep in mind for the weeks ahead:
• Please hold the date: Wednesday, June 15 at 6pm for a thank-you barbecue in honor of Pastor
Bill and Susan Wessner for their two years of service to Elim.
• Published details about the new pastor: We will release written information about the new
pastor once we have confirmation that he has accepted the call and notified his current
congregation. In the meantime, please remember our commitment to keeping off the internet,
social media, and Lutheran grapevine with any details of our call.
• Our new pastor will be moving to Petaluma from out of state. He and his family (wife, 2
children) are looking for a rental to begin with. As many of us know, rental rates in Petaluma
are really high and inventory is low. So if anyone has a lead on a good home for a young family
of 4 or 5 that is available for rent in Petaluma or a nearby community, please let Kevin Prime or
Dan Widger know as soon as possible.

LATEST FROM LITTLE SHEPHERD
It’s hard to believe that our school year is nearly over. We have had an amazing year filled with
memories – we are truly blessed to work with such special children. Registration for the 2016-2017
school year has been going well. Both 2’s classes and the 4’s morning classes are full, and we have
limited openings in our 3’s class and our afternoon 4’s class. The Spring Fundraiser was a great success
and guarantees that we will continue with our gymnastics and music programs.
We wish you all a happy summer!

FAITH FORMATION
SUMMER FELLOWSHIP FOR FAMILIES
A big THANK YOU to all Faith Formation teachers! You rock! Your commitment has been a blessing to
Elim.
This summer, I am going to host a children's
drop-in fellowship area in the side room of the
Fellowship Hall between the services from
9:40am-10:25am so parents can mingle with
other adults over a cup of coffee. Along with a few youth helpers, I will hang out with any kids who
would like to color and play in that area. It is not a closed-in area, and the kids will have the choice to
hang out or stay with their parents. The children will be allowed to go in and out of the room at any
time during the coffee hour. Please contact me with any questions.
Sarah Labberton: [email protected]
ADULT FAITH FORMATION OPPORTUNITIES
Adult Forum Sundays at 9:40am in the Choir Room
Adult Forum meets on Sundays between services to finish up the study and discussion of a book by
Philip Yancey, Soul Survivor: How Thirteen Unlikely Mentors Helped my Faith Survive the Church. The pun
on “soul” is intended as Yancey tells his faith story which rises out of a heavy fundamental church
tradition and how he survived by reading other Christian authors. In telling this story, the book
becomes a sampler of twentieth century Christian writing and authors.
Exploring the Story Tuesdays at 7pm, Choir Room
Come and engage in deep, meaningful, and exploratory conversation about the Bible readings from the
previous Sunday. A great group of regulars are always eager to welcome newcomers to the bunch.
OUTREACH & COMMUNITY
EASTSIDE AND WESTSIDE INTERFAITH PANTRIES
This month Elim serves on Tuesday, June 7, at Lucchesi Park and will cover the Westside Pantry on
Thursday, June 16, in our Fellowship Hall. Come a little before 5pm to help set up. We start serving at
5:30pm and are usually done and headed home by 6pm. Bring the kids, a friend or neighbor, and a high
school student who needs to fulfill community service hours. If you would like to be included in the
reminder emails about pantries, please contact Becky in the office ([email protected] / 762-4081).
Egg cartons (6- or 12-count) and paper bags always accepted in the office for use at pantries.

SECOND MILE GIVING | CHANGE THE WORLD: NEW ORLEANS SERVICE TEAM
“Second mile giving” refers to an extra offering towards a special cause. The June recipient will be our team
traveling to New Orleans in July. Check off “Special Offering” on the pew envelopes, look for the special offering
envelopes in the back of the sanctuary, or click on the “Donate Now” button on our website to contribute.
Can you believe that New Orleans is still recovering from Katrina more than 10 years later?
Unfortunately, they are. Many are still not home so the Elim R3 New Orleans team will be
leaving on July 9 for a week of work with SBP (formerly known as St. Bernard Project) to
rebuild houses. SBP is an award-winning non-profit that has created a "back to home"
model that has been in practiced in New Orleans (600 homes have been rebuilt), New York
and New Jersey, Missouri, and now in South Carolina.
Our fundraising money goes to our housing (a Mustard Seeds Mission house) and transportation when
we are in New Orleans, as well as a sizable donation to the SBP so they can continue to help people come
home.
In the past we have gardened, painted, hung sheet rock, mudded, torn up
floors, put floors down, hung doors and finished windowsills - we will see
what new skills we may learn this year. We will find out, as we get closer,
where and what we will be working on. But it isn’t all work - we will meet
new people and soak in the culture of New Orleans, from the swamp tours to
the Garden District. We look forward to hearing some Zydeco music and some
Jazz. We hope to reconnect with some of the people we have helped in past
years as well, perhaps have them over for dinner.
Thank you for all support Elim provides. We couldn't do it without all of you.
“GOD’S WORK. OUR HANDS.” SUNDAY Sunday, September 11
“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. The suggested date for
the 2016 dedicated day of service is Sunday, September 11, the 15-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2011,
terrorist attacks on the United States. Past Elim projects for this day have included stream clean up,
“Cookies & a Smile” for seniors, making dog blankets for the animal shelter, weed eradication at
Shollenberger Park, and various jobs at the Mary Isaak Center/COTS.
Over the past two years, Athena Labberton has coordinated this event for Elim. She has a monumental
conflict this year (ask her about it!) so we are hoping someone or a team will be willing to take on
organizing this day of service. Please contact the office if you are willing to help or if you have project
ideas.
SONGS AT THE BEDSIDE June 8, 5:30-7:30pm, Hospice of Petaluma (416 Payran St)
Music often evokes tears and touches hearts and minds. Join us for an evening of song and inspiration
by the Threshold Choir of Sonoma County, whose volunteers sing for free by request at the bedsides of

those who are facing death, grief, and suffering. Now an international movement, there are over 100
Threshold Choirs with over 1,000 women and men singing at besides around the world. This free
program is one of the ways Hospice Services of St. Joseph Health thanks our community for the
incredible support they have received throughout the years.
APPROACHING DEATH WITHOUT FEAR Friday, June 17, 7pm
California Lutheran University Congregational Relations invites you to tune into a live stream
presentation of "Approaching Death Without Fear" by esteemed speaker, Dr. Barry Kerzin. Many people
spend considerable time worrying about their ultimate death, fearing the unknown yet trying to prepare
for the occurrence. Knowledge and acceptance of death as the natural extension of life may provide
some comfort on our journey. The process of death involves eight stages from the Buddhist
understanding. We will discuss and contemplate on these processes. Through understanding, what is
happening as we die reduces fear. Dr. Kerzin will share some experiences of unusual deaths as a
physician and Buddhist monk.

GRATITUDE Regarding the fanny pack ministry . . . PLEASE thank all our friends at Elim for that incredible outpouring
of generosity to the COTS residents! Those bags were truly, truly incredible, and the fact that you took
time to separate and label them was like icing on the cake. Debbie Robbins, our Family Manager, really
lit up when she saw them, she says you've been doing this since forever, and everybody loves them. So
thank you, thank you, thank you to ALL our friends at Elim! We always feel your love and caring for
the COTS clients!! :)
Indigo Perry, COTS Volunteer Coordinator
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ at Elim,
THANK YOU for the wonderful day of ordination! For the spirit-filled service, joyful music, delightful
reception. I was overwhelmed by your great enthusiasm and hospitality. It was truly a day full of grace!
Thank you also for the beautiful purple stole. I will think of you with love and gratitude as I wear it in
the season of Lent.
Most of all, thank you for all your prayers and support over the years. So much of my discernment came
through ministry with you and the leadership roles you encouraged me to take.
My ministry at Faith, Murphys, and Mountain Ranch churches begins June 1.
You have been my home congregation for 23 years, a gracious and faith-full community in Christ, and I
will hold you in my heart and in my prayers always.
Yours in Christ,
Karen Johnson

A huge THANK YOU to all who supported the New Orleans Jazz Dinner & Silent Auction. We hope
you all had a fun time. We couldn't have done it without Gene and Delores McCloud who made the
étouffée and kept the kitchen fun, Judy Peterson who was head bread pudding maker, or Kim Svinth
who helped everywhere. We are getting in the New Orleans mind set more every day.
ELIM REGISTRY Trenton Eli Herrera, son of Christopher and Brittney Herrera, was baptized at Elim on

READINGS During the summer, we will follow the revised common lectionary.
June 5: 3rd Sunday after Pentecost
Readings: 1 Kings 17:17-24; Psalm 30; Galatians 1:11-24;
Gospel: Luke 7:11-17 -- Jesus’ ministry bears witness to God’s coming reign, where the
lowly are shown mercy and the dead are raised. Here, Jesus ministers to a widow by
raising her only son to life.
June 12: 4th Sunday after Pentecost Readings: 2 Samuel 11:26-12:10, 13-15; Psalm 32; Galatians 2:15-21
Gospel: Luke 7:36-8:3 -- Through a dramatic encounter of rich and poor, righteous and
sinner, Jesus teaches the relationship between receiving mercy and responding with a
lavish outpouring of love. Jesus also provokes his host by claiming authority to forgive
sins.
June 19: VBS Sunday and Pastor Bill’s last Sunday at Elim Readings: Isaiah 65:1-9; Psalm 22:19-28; Galatians 3:23-29
Gospel: Luke 8:26-39 -- Jesus’ mission includes foreigners, and his authority extends to
the casting out of demons. Some who witness Jesus’ work are seized with confusion and
fear, but the man who was healed is commissioned to give testimony of God’s mercy and
power.
June 26: 6th Sunday after Pentecost Readings: 1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21; Psalm 16; Galatians 5:1, 13-25
Gospel: Luke 9:51-62 -- Jesus is unwavering in his commitment to his mission in
