ThetrainingisheldatthePatrolAcademyinColumbusandlasts7Saturdays.PatrolAcademyIn-structorsandpatrolfieldunitsprovidedthetraining.ThetrainingconsistedofanoverviewofthePatrolsdailyfunctions,AuxiliaryOfficersroles,firearms,maceandTaserfamiliarization,subjectcontrolandsurvivaltechniques,lawenforcementcommunica-tion,homelandsecurityandpatrolpolicies. TheAuxiliaryCouncilofAdministrationapprovedachangetotheGeneralOrdersinApril2005.ThechangecreatedapositionofAuxiliaryHistorian.TheHistorianwillcreateandmaintaininformationonformerAuxiliaryOfficers,assistthePatrolHistorianswithAuxiliaryitems,inventoryandcatalogAuxiliaryHistoricalarticlesaswellaseventanddisplayplanning.AnyAuxiliaryinterestedinbecomingtheAuxiliaryHistorianshouldprepareabriefresumeandforwardittoLt.ColonelForbesatGHQofficeofStrategicServices–AuxiliarybyJune1,2006.
William T Bucher selected for Earl Ulmer Meritorious Service Award
TheUlmerawardisthehighesthonorbe-stoweduponanAuxiliaryOfficerandisawardedforoutstandingservice,courage,valororheroism.AuxiliaryOfficerBucherwasridingonpatrolwithTrooperDariusRobertswhentheyrespondedtoapursuit.Whenthepursuitended,thesuspectexitedhiscarwavingalargescrewdriverattherespondingofficers.Ultimately,troopersfiredonthesuspectandTrooperTiffanyAppolloniowasstruckbya
bullet.AuxiliaryBucherimmediatelywenttotheradioandadvisedthatanofficerhadbeenshotandrequestedmedicalassistance.HethenwenttoTrooperAppollonio,helpedhertothegroundandperformedfirstaiduntilthemedicsarrived.AuxiliaryBucherisas-signedtotheDelawarePost.
Auxiliary Officer Robert M. Yodice selected as 2005 William J. Duffy Award of Excellence Winner
TheDuffyAwardrecognizestheAuxiliaryOfficerwhodo-natesaminimumof300hourseachyearfromtheprevious3years,maintainsphysicalfit-ness,andrespondstoemergen-cycalloutsandspecialdetailswhenneeded.Only17Auxilia-ryOfficermetthecriteriatobeeligiblefortheDuffyAwardin2005.AuxiliaryOfficerYodiceaveraged1619hoursperyearforthelast3years.Bobhas

District Officers of the Year: New Auxiliary Body Armor Ordered
Throughout2005theAuxiliarysecuredfundingforreplacementof20%oftheirexistingbodyarmor.ThemajorityofAuxiliaryOfficersarecurrentlyusingbodyarmorhandeddownwhentrooper’sbodyarmorisreplaced.MostbodyarmorinusebytheAuxiliaryisatleast10yearsold. TheAuxiliaryreceivednumerousdonationsfromAmericanLegionPost’sthroughoutthestate.AdditionalmoneywasraisedduringaraffleheldduringAuxiliaryStatewideTraining.ThenewbodyarmoristhreatlevelIIextendedprotectionconstructedofaramidfabrics. Auxiliary Statewide Training Day
TheannualAuxiliarytrainingwasheldattheAcademyonOctober8thandOctober22ndwith4to5districtsoftheAuxiliaryattendingeachday.AfteranopeningsessionbyMajorBorn,therewereUniformInspectionsandIDphotostaken.TheAuxiliaryOfficersthenattendedapresentationontheAuxiliaryOfficer’sroleintherecentTrooperinvolvedshootingonIS-71byOfficerBillBucher.
Thentherewasaclassroompresentationonresponsetoresistanceandstopsandapproaches.IntheafternoontheAuxiliaryofficersweredividedintothreegroups.OnegroupwastrainingonTaserfamiliarizationandmace.Duringthe
trainingeveryAuxiliaryOfficerwasmaced.Anothergroupreceivedstopsandapproachestrainingin-volvinganofficershotsituationandshotgunsimunationsfiring,there-mainingweretrainedonhandcuff-ingandsubjectcontroltechniques.Eachofthegroupsswitchedandreceivedtheothersessions.Abigthank-yougoestoallthein-structors(S/Lt.ShawnLee,Lt.Dan
Greene,Sgt.Boscy,Sgt.Rine,Sgt.Crispen,Sgt.Raines,Tpr.HomrighausenandTprBierdeman)whohelpedmakethisoneofthebesttrainingsessionsever.AspecialthankyouisextendedSgt.Elschlager,SgtQuinnandTprDelColwhoassistedontheirowntime.TheAuxiliaryalsosoldraffleticketsateachsessionandnumerousitemswerepassedoutafterthesecondsession.ThemoneycollectedfromtherafflethisyearwillbeaddedtotheAuxiliaryfundandbeusedtopurchasebodyarmorandgeneraloperatingcostforAuxiliaryoperations.
