  • There’s no resting in youth ministry! Our youth will be keeping busy with opportunities for fun, fellowship, faith, and service! Middle school girls will meet Monday evenings at 6:30pm for Bible study. Wednesday nights beginning at 6:00pm are reserved for what sounds like some messy events (water, paint, Jell-O night? Thankfully not all at once). Our middle school community service day will happen on June 13. Our youth choir will be on tour from June 23-25. (I’m exhausted just typing it all!)

For full details on all of the things our fantastic youth have going on, please contact [email protected] or visit our FCUMC youth website at http://fcumcyouth.org.

It was the first major issue with which the early church was confronted…what to do about the Gentiles. Up to this point they had focused their preaching in the synagogues and among the Jewish people. Nevertheless, Gentiles had also begun to believe and the church had to decide whether or not they would open their hearts (and doors) to a new focus in ministry. Acts 15 provides a glimpse at how they came to a decision as well as the faithful steps they took.

Like the early church Fountain City UMC has an important decision to make about the direction of our ministry. For several months we have been exploring the opportunity to establish a second campus on Dry Gap Pike and offer new

ministries to the residents of Sterchi Village and Sterchi Hills neighborhoods. We have had in-depth discussions about how this opportunity could impact the lives of people we are not currently reaching, how it would benefit our entire congregation and the costs (financial and otherwise) that it would incur. We have held an open house for people to see the facilities and worship together. We have prayerfully sought God’s guidance. Over the next few weeks we will continue to visit Sunday School classes and present the information so that an informed decision will be made.

On June 25th, immediately following our 11:00am worship service, we will hold a Church Conference to make a final decision on the Dry Gap Pike property. All members of our church have a voice and a vote; however, according to our Book of Discipline, you must be present to vote. If you have questions, concerns, or just want to know more , please give us a call at the church office. Regardless of the outcome of the vote, at Fountain City UMC we are committed to finding new ways to reach new people…making disciples and changing lives!

  • WE’VE GOT SCHOOL SPIRITDuring the schoolyear, our Adults 50+ ministry collected & donated several needed classroom supplies for Inskip Elementary. Our young friends (and their teachers!) at Inskip Elementary were well provided for by our members! We received this gracious thank you letter, and would like to share it with you, our generous members!

Thank you so much for all of the support you provided to Inskip ES this year! All of the snacks, drinks, tissues, and hand sanitizers were much needed and greatly appreciated by all. The snacks provided a great start to our students’ days when they came in late without breakfast. The tissues and hand sanitizers came in very handy during those months when we had so many little stuffy noses. Please know you all have been a wonderful blessing to Inskip this year.

Sincerely, Jessica Holman, PrincipalAmy Schumpert, Assistant Principal

Did you know FCUMC has a dedicated pool of prayer partners and letter writers who pray daily for the teachers and staff at Gresham Middle School? During the school year, several of our members are assigned one teacher or staff member at GMS, and encourage them through prayer, cards, and small gifts.

We at FCUMC know teachers and staff who have made education their lifelong careers are investing their lives in our students, and we are honored to play a small part in showing our appreciation!

If you would like to be a Gresham Middle School prayer partner for the upcoming schoolyear, please contact Kim Meade, or be on a look out for sign-ups this fall!

This Church Conference will vote on the Church Council’s proposal to enter a 2-year lease of the Dry Gap Pike property for use as a second campus. • Did you know Fountain City UMC serves as the meeting place for several Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops?

Recently, Boy Scout Troop 55 honored two of their members with the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts: Nate Dale & FCUMC’s own Tyler Bloomfield, son of Kim Bloom-field.

Tyler has been part of Troop 55 since 2009. His favorite activities in scouting have included cooking, mapping, and being part of The Order of the Arrow.

In order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, Tyler had to complete a service project. For his project, Tyler joined with EastTennessee Children’s Hospital in building new bookshelves and increasing their DVD library, a desperate need for entertaining the children who were hospitalized at ETCH. Tyler collected over 300 new & used DVDs for their collection.

Now that Tyler has completed his Eagle Scout badge, he will continue to work on the Board for The Order of the Arrow,

and participate in his troopactivities as needed.

    The Court of Honor cele-

    brating Tyler and Nate’s incredible

accomplishments will be on June 11, at 5:00pm at New Harvest Park. FCUMC is proud of Troop 55’s newest Eagle Scouts!

Fountain City UMC’s newest Daisy troophad their BridgingCeremony on Thurs-day, May 18. This was Julie Dawson’s first year as Girl Scout Leader with nine energetic Daisies:Carys, Ellie, Claire,Alana, Fiona, Ava,

    Kadayjah, Elena, and Mackenzie.

These girls earned all of their Daisy petals and exceeded their Girl Scout cookie sales goal (as I exceeded my Girl Scout cookie eating goal), all while having a lot of fun and learning what it means to be a Girl Scout. Some highlights of their year includedlearning to respect authority from a State Patrol officer, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and singing Christmas carols at ElmcroftAssisted Living. Welcome to the Brownies, girls!

FCUMC provides the support and space for these troops to suc-ceed within the greater Scouting organization. Thank you!

    THE SCOUTS

MAY IT BE A SWEET, SWEET SOUNDBY LESLIE GRAVES

Fountain City UMC’s Chancel Choir has been invited to sing at the 2017 Holston Annual Conference. We are so excited to share some of our favorite music as part of the opening service on the evening of June 11! With a pre-service concert and several anthemsduring the service, we will be able to sing for approximately 45 minutes. Our Chancel Choir will sing hymn arrangements and choral favorites, including “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” and “I Wanna Be Ready.”

This is not the first time our choir has been a part of Annual Conference activities, but it has been a rather long time since our last appearance, and we are honored to have been asked to return. I’m not sure exactly how many years it has been, but I do know it was two choir directors ago. Let’s just say it has been more than 17 years. For several of our choir members, this will be a first-time experience. It will be for me, too, and I hope to represent FCUMC well! You are welcome to make the drive to Lake Junaluska to support us, or you could watch the live streaming online at http://holston.org/about/an-nual-conference/. [Editor’s Note: All Annual Conferencesessions are open to the public, and will be live streamed on their website.]

It is an honor for me every week to rehearse with and lead such a good choir. Better still is the fact that our choir is filled with people whom I love and who have become like family to me and to each other. We don’t worship only on Sunday mornings; we worship every time we sing together, and that is a beautiful thing.

CRAFTING THE CROSS AT CALVARYBY SANDY FAILING

The Henderson Settlement in Kentucky is a UMC ministry providing service and opportunities in Appalachia. Recently, they reached out to all of their Covenant supporters asking for an embroidered square for their Blessing Quilt. This quilt will be made up of quilting squares designed by each Covenant Supporters to honor their support of Henderson Settlement. Fountain City UMC is honored to partner with this wonderful ministry, and it was our privilege to partake in this.

My mom was a wonderful “crafter” and she taught me how to embroider, knit, crochet, tat, hook rugs, do macramé, and a lot of other things starting when I was about 5 or 6 years old. By the time I was 11, I was making all of my own clothes. I have enjoyed all types of handicrafts ever since, and I am seldom in front of the TV at night without some sort of project in my hands.

I can’t take credit for the design; I bought an iron-on transfer at Joanne Fabric and stitched that pattern. I have never actually quilted, although I would love to learn.

My husband Ken and I moved to Knoxville from Connecticut almost two years ago. We had visited FCUMC when we were here a couple of years earlierand found everyone to be so welcoming that we decided to buy a home within a 15-minute radius of the church so we could become members when we moved. We love attending our Pairs & Spares Sunday school class, as well as the Wednesday night fellowship meal and Adult Formation classes. We just love being a part of the ministries here at FCUMC!
