THE SPIRIT FOUNTAIN CITY UMC
JULY 2017 NEWSLETTER
FOUNTAIN CITY UMC 212 HOTEL ROAD KNOXVILLE, TN 37918 (865) 689-5175 www.fountaincityumc.org @fountaincityumc
I love the statement in Luke 5 when Jesus said to Peter, “Launch out into the deep.” When Peter and those in his boat went farther into the deep, a futile night ended with a miraculous catch of fish. I have always understood that statement of Jesus to be our calling as individuals and as the church. Too many times I have been guilty of only staying in the shallow waters of faith.
One thing I have learned over the past five years is that Fountain City UMC isn’t afraid to launch out into those deep waters. We have taken significant steps of faith, only to see God bless us in abundant ways. This year’s capital campaign (“Belonging, Changing, Growing: Positioning ourselves to make disciples and change lives”) is a challenge to move into the deep waters of faithful stewardship and more effective ministry. The reality is that our $1.1
million debt is limiting the ministries we can offer and makes it difficult to move beyond what we are already doing for Jesus’ sake.
To date we have received $663,518 in pledges to our capital campaign. That figure more than doubles our commitments from the last campaign, but it only underwrites approximately 66% of our debt. I hope as we move through the summer, you will consider making a pledge to this campaign, help us pay off the debt, and position the church we love in a way that will help us to more fully answer God’s call to become fishers of men and women.
We can meet this goal and go far beyond it. Commitment cards can be found in the envelope racks in our pews or picked up at the church office. If we are willing, I can’t wait to see what miraculous results God will bring!

THIS FALL: DISCIPLESHIP OPPORTUNITIES WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT FORMATION CLASSES
What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? To be more than just a believer in His existence? To answer His call to follow Him?
No matter where you are in your journey of faith - whether you’ve just heard the name of Jesus for the first time or you’ve been a member of the church your whole life or you’re somewhere in between - God’s desire for you is to continue growing in your faith. As a church family, we want to provide the tools and support along that faith journey so we all strive for the same goal: to experience life with God to the full.
This Fall, we will be offering new Wednesday night formations for adults: Pathways: Opportunities to Grow as Disciples of Jesus Christ. Pathways will consist of three distinct growth tracks tailored to where you find yourself in your relationship with God, with the goal of going deeper, both individually and as a church body.
Course listings and descriptions will be available at the Welcome Center, in adult Sunday School classes, and on our website.

“MEMBERS IN THE WILD” FCUMC is filled with folks with sincere servant hearts. So it should come as no surprise when several FCUMC women participated in Habitat for Humanity’s 2017 Women’s Build!
