For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. Gal 5:17

For I know that nothing good
dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.(Rom 7:18a)
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy
Spirit who is in you.
(1 Cor 6:19)
But I say, walk in the Spirit, and you will not
carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the
flesh, for these are in opposition to one another..
(Gal 5:16, 17)Abide in Me
(Jesus), and I in you.
(John 15:4)
Whoever confesses that
Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in
him..(1 John 4:15)
Now those who belong to Christ
Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions
and desires.(Gal 5:24)

Resisting the Flesh and Releasing the Spirit
Our aim is to co-operate with God in submitting to the Spirit and “putting to death” the urges of the Flesh.
In order to do that, we must be able to clearly recognize what is of the flesh and what is of the Spirit.
The flesh, (Gr sarx) denotes mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from divine influence, and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God.
Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness (life) ? Rom 6:16
The works of the FleshNow the works of the flesh are evident, which are:
Adultery Fornication
(sexual immorality) Uncleanness
(impurity) Lewdness (sensuality) Idolatry Sorcery Hatred Contentions
Jealousies Outbursts of Anger Selfish ambitions Dissensions Heresies Envy Murders Drunkenness Revelries
Gal 5:19-21
The Flesh is all about Self
Self-gratified Self-important Self-concerned Self-absorbed Self-sensitive Self-sufficient Self-justified
Blaming others Not accepting responsibility
The fruit of the Spirit Love Joy
Peace Patience Kindness Goodness
Faithfulness Gentleness Self-control
Gal 5:22-23
The Spirit Focuses on God and Others
Be still and know that I am God Trusting that God knows better than I do
Regular study of His word. Praying without ceasing
Allowing God to change me every day Considering others
Removing me and putting Jesus on the throne of my life
Worship (we were created to give God glory)
Until Christ is formed in us
The Greek word for formed – morphoo – refers to an internal reality. It speaks of a
change in character, becoming conformed to the character of Christ.
This is a life-long process – it is the work of the Holy Spirit – and we cooperate by resisting the flesh and submitting to the
Spirit.
Paul writes to the Galations (4:19) saying, “My children, with whom I am again in labour until Christ is formed
in you.”

The Spirit
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
1 Cor 2:10
• Image of God
• Dormant until born again
The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart.
Prov 20:27 This verse defines the use of our spirit
(conscience) given to ALL men by God
The Soul
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is
able to save your souls. James 1:21 In Revelation John speaks of seeing the
souls of martyrs in Heaven
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
with all your mind, and with all your strength.
Mark 12:30
The Mind
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and
acceptable and perfect will of God. Rom 12:2
Mind• Intellect
• Will
The mind is the seat of our intellect and will
The Mind
Satan puts tempting thoughts into our mind that appeal to our fleshly nature
Satan appeals to our desire for instant gratification
The flesh justifies why we should just go along with these urges
The Spirit cautions us by means of our conscience
We have to choose by an act of the will
Mind• Intellect
• Will
The mind is the battleground for our Souls
Intellect
The rational part of man The seat of our intelligence
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom. Col 3:16
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to
yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
James 3:17
Mind• Intellect
• Will
Our ability to reason, learn, decide and gain wisdom
The Will
This means we have to choose between the loud and obvious pull of the flesh and
the gentle promptings of the Spirit. As we learn to recognize the Spirit and by
an act of the will choose Him and resist the flesh, we will experience walking in
the Spirit.
Mind• Intellect
• Will
One of the amazing things about God’s love is that he entrusted us with free will.
The Heart
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Jer 17:9 The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart. 1 Sam 13:14
Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!
Ps 119:2
Heart• Emotions
• Desires
The heart is the seat of our emotions and our desires.
Emotions
These are the good urges that we feel The Flesh will bring out bad emotions of lust, hatred, uncontrolled anger, jealousy. These are the bad urges that we feel
Learn to recognize where our emotions are coming from and resist those from the flesh, and release those from the
Spirit.
Heart• Emotions
• Desires
The Spirit will bring out good emotions of joy, laughter, compassion and weeping.
Desires
For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire; Ps 10:3
He (God) will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry
and save them. Ps 145:19
Heart• Emotions
• Desires
Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Ps 37:4
Flesh
If you resist God you will regress from the knowledge of God
giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron. 1Tim 4:2
Which will lead to the final position: And since they did not see fit to acknowledge
God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. Rom 1:28

For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of
the body, you will live. Rom 8:13
Five Practical Biblical Keys
to Living in the Spirit
1. Sow2. Reckon3. Live4. Resist5. Confess
Sow
We clearly want to receive from others the attributes of the Spirit (love, joy etc) and not the
attributes of the flesh (hatred, anger etc)
What we sow we reap. Be sure to sow into the lives of others from the Spirit and not from the
flesh.
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For
he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of
the Spirit reap everlasting life. (Gal 6: 7-8)
Reckon (consider)
Be fully persuaded of the truth that Jesus overcame sin and death on the cross on your
behalf.
Behave as though you have put sin to death and that you live each moment for God.
Reckon (consider) yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Rom 6:11)
Live
Our attitudes and behavior determine whether we are living to the flesh or the Spirit.
We must ask the Spirit of God to help us to put the deeds of the flesh to death. God is our fortress and our deliverer. In Him we are overcomers.
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the
body, you will live. (Rom 8:13)
Resist
The will comes into it here. We choose to submit to God and resist the devil.
The devil will flee from you when you resist him in the name of Jesus and the power of the Holy
Spirit.
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7)
Confess
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
Don’t tell everybody about the things you’re battling with, but find one or two people you can
trust. Share your battles and ask for prayer – this is a mighty powerful weapon.
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The
effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (James 5:16)
Finally
You can be assured that He is right there when you call on Him.
He has undertaken to perfect this work in us- but he requires our cooperation because
He has given us freedom of choice.
God is more concerned that the Spirit has victory over the flesh than you are.
Encouraging Scriptures
He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the Day of Jesus Christ. (Phil 1:6)
For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. (Phil 2:13)
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and
body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1Thes 5:23)
The Lord will perfect (finish, accomplish, perform, fulfill) His purpose for me. (Ps
138:8a)
