From the Pastors Desk……..

Are you a “sidelines” person or do you like to get to be in the middle of the action? Do you

feel like standing around the edges of a group or do you like to lead the group? Might you prefer

your voice to be quiet and soft or loud and bold?

We each have gifts and talents that are different from one another. God has blessed us in

unique ways! We are called as people of faith to use these offerings as we go about our lives; in

our families, our places of employment and in the larger world.

As we travel through our Lenten journey, let us spend some time in prayer and discernment

on ways we are called to proclaim God’s message of saving grace. It might be in reaching out to

someone who has hurt you in the past or reclaiming a relationship that had been broken. Maybe

you are feeling like God is calling you to speak out in a public way for the first time, or it might be

dedicating yourself to prayer and Scripture reading.

Lent is a good time to look at ourselves and our faith practices and, with the help of God,

step forward with a new sense of boldness and purpose. We know that this world and our country

desperately needs to hear the hope and the promise of a caring and loving God.

A Message from Your Council President

An opportunity to share your ideas……

Melissa Jones and I have spent many hours contacting and meeting with local contractors in an

effort to get the right look and feel for the renovation of the old sanctuary, while also keeping in

mind our bottom line.

Much time has been spent meeting with HVAC professionals, flooring people, painters, stone

workers, sound system and lighting specialists….just to name a few. We also want to know what

ideas you may have. Do you have a particular vision or idea you would like to see in the sanctuary

renovation?

Look for the suggestion box in the back of the multipurpose room which will give you an

opportunity to share your ideas.

Complete the provided renovation suggestion form, making sure it is written legibly, and you print

and sign your name. Everyone who fills out a form will receive a reply from the renovation team.

And Melissa, “thank you” for taking on the challenge of the sanctuary renovation!

Respectfully,

Brian Bowman

Notes from the Property Committee

We are always looking for hands to help with small projects around the facilities. Please con-

tact a staff member or council member if you would like to contribute to a short-term or long-

term project.

Capital Project Update

The modular classroom installation and grading around the buildings is almost complete.

There are final steps for plumbing and cable connections; and inspections to obtain the Use and

Occupancy permit.

Volunteer for a Property Project

Saturday, March 17th from 8am to 12pm is the annual spring cleanup day, when we clean out

the flower beds around the church property and spread some fresh mulch. New this year –

middle school and high school youth can participate to earn service hours!

Sanctuary Renovation Update

A committee has formed to address coordination of all the tasks involved in converting the pre-

school classroom space to the new dedicated sanctuary space. Join the committee to help with

the design and conversion; also look for the suggestion box in the multipurpose room where

you can drop in ideas for what you want to be included in our new worship space.

More Than a Snow Tubing Trip On Monday, January 29th Kim Brecker, Nicole Giordano and I accompanied a small group of our youth and a couple of their friends to Ski Liberty for snow tubing. We spent two hours speeding down snow covered hills on large inflatable tubes while sometimes spin-ning like a top. And, in my case, holding on for dear life! Snow tubing was fun, but the thing I enjoyed the most was the fellowship. I’m a social person (less a social butterfly and more of an irritating moth) and getting to spend time with our youth, Kim and Nicole was priceless. God has created us to live in community – to do life together. The Greek word is koinonia which means to fellowship, or participate in something that connects us. May I be so bold as to suggest that during this time of year the Christian Cal-endar provides us the perfect time to connect with others? The Lenten and Easter season is now upon us. Let me encourage you to not only bond with your church family here at Holy Spirit, and invite family and friends to our services, but more importantly, to spend some time through introspection and prayer to connect with God the Father as He invites us to celebrate the mystery of redemption through the death, burial and resurrection of his son Jesus Christ. Hymn Story — We Are Baptized in Christ Jesus

Both the words and the music for this hymn were written by John Ylvisaker, a member of a prominent Norwegian Lutheran family which includes pastors, church musicians, and Lutheran college and seminary professors. He was born on September 11, 1937, and grew up around Moorhead, MN, where his parents were on the faculty of Concordia College. Ylvisaker graduated from Concordia in 1959 with a degree in music and history. Although his background was in classical music and Lutheran chorales, Ylvisaker came to understand that that type of music did not appeal to the average person in the pew. He learned to play the guitar and began to combine folk tunes with biblical texts to produce a new style of church music. This led Gracia Grindal, a professor at Luther Seminary, to call Ylvisaker the “Bob Dylan of Lutheranism”. He spent 15 years working as the in-house musician for the American Lutheran Church. When it became part of the ELCA in 1988, Ylvisaker began touring and providing music at churches, assemblies, conventions, and retreats. He wrote the theme song for the National Youth Gatherings for over 40 years. According to the list of titles on his website (www.ylvisaker.com), he wrote over 1200 songs between 1963 and 2006. Three of them are in Evangelical Lutheran Worship, including “Borning Cry”, which is probably the most famous one of them all. John Ylvisaker died on March 9, 2017.

1 We are baptized in Christ Jesus, we are baptized in his death; that as Christ is raised victorious, we might live a brand new life. And if we have been united in a dreadful death like his, we will all be reunited, for he lives.

2 In the water and the witness, in the breaking of the bread, in the waiting arms of Jesus who is risen from the dead, God has made a new beginning, from the ashes of our past; in the losing and the winning we hold fast.

3 Glory be to God the Father, glory be to Christ the Son, glory to the Holy Spirit ever three and ever one; as it was in the beginning, glory now resounds again in a song that has no ending. Amen. *

John C. Ylvisaker

Scrip Program

The Holy Spirit Learning Center now has a way for you to shop and to support the preschool program at the same time. The program called SCRIP enables you to pur-chase gift cards at face value. When you then use the gift cards to make purchases, the preschool is gifted with a percentage of the value of the card. The percentages vary beginning at 2 percent. Gift cards available cover a variety of businesses from Starbucks to Target to LLBean to Home Depot and more. How can I participate? Use an order form found at the preschool bulletin board in the multipurpose room and return to the preschool mailbox or give to Lorraine Markosky. You can also enroll online with Presto Pay and have the gift cards delivered to you through e-Scrip on your Dashboard, or mailed to you in 2-3 business days. Any questions? Ask Lorraine Markosky or Sue Podobnik.

We will be celebrating spring. Our character trait for this

month is Responsibility. We will start our month off with

class and individual pictures done by Irvin Simon Photog-

raphy. Throughout the month we will celebrate the gifts that God gives us in the spring.

The children will enjoy new growth of the trees and the beautiful flowers that bloom.

The two’s continue to grow and make lots of fun art projects. There will be some fun and

messy things in their discovery table. They love to touch, feel, and investigation all of the

wonderful things Ms. Vicky will put into that table. Some of things she has used in the

past are snow, dirt, water, pompoms, and rice. They can’t wait to see what’s next.

The three’s will work with their letters and numbers in many ways to make learning fun.

Ms. Mary will do some experiments to learn about the changing world around them.

There will be lots of fun crafts about spring.

The Pre-K classes will get ready to attend kindergarten as they visit their schools and reg-

ister for next year. They will continue to learn about their letters and numbers and hand-

writing. They continue to build their vocabulary and reading skills as they work with

their sight words.

Chapel Time this Month I will make pretzels and learn about where the Pretzel treat

came from. Around the year 610, an Italian monk made a treat for the children who

learned to recite their prayers. Christians in those days prayed by folding their hands

across their chests with each hand touching the opposite shoulder. This clever monk

formed the dough so that it would look like hands folded in prayer.

Pretzel Prayer; “Holy God, may these pretzel snacks remind us to always

turn to you in prayer. Amen.” Our Grandparents day will be the 14 and 15 of this month. On these days we will invite

our Grandparents to spend some time with us and see what we are doing. Please check out our Facebook page. We still have a few openings in some of our classes

for the next school year. We now have 109 spots filled with lots of afternoon spots left.

If you are interested in learning more about our Preschool please feel free to call the pre-

school office @ 410-795-2287.
