Next Sunday, the Feast of Christ the King, when we mark the end of the liturgical year, Pope Francis will conclude the Year of Mercy and close the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica. We need to prepare to remember the insights and blessings of this year into the future. Personally, I found this Year of Mercy the most powerful of any of the Papal-themed years I have experienced (other than the one I celebrated while living in Rome!). Please know the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy The Spiritual Works of Mercy Feed the hungry. Admonish the sinner Give drink to the thirsty. Instruct the ignorant Clothe the naked. Counsel the doubtful Shelter the homeless. Bear wrongs patiently Visit the imprisoned. Forgive offenses willingly Visit the sick. Comfort the sorrowful Bury the dead. Pray for the living and the dead Let me address two. Bury the dead: Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions during these times, we show our respect for life, and we can offer those who mourn a hope in the resurrection.

Attend the funeral Mass of fellow parishioners. Often relatives and friends of the deceased are not familiar with the Mass, and so as a parish, we need to strengthen the participation of the assembly at funerals. Make your own arrangements for a funeral Mass, and clearly state you want to be buried in accordance with Church guidelines, whether this involves a coffin or an urn. Gently encourage relatives and friends who have cremated remains in their homes to bury those remains in a cemetery. Have a Mass offered for those Catholics you know who die and who do not have a funeral Mass.

Counsel the doubtful: Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and turn to him along our way.

Proverbs 20:19 tells us, “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may eventually become wise". Are we willing to admit we need counsel? Are we willing to see we can grow in wisdom? Has someone asked you for advice? Think and pray before you offer any. Orient your response to Jesus Christ – what would Christ say if faced with the same issues addressed to you? Accompany a friend who is struggling with believing to join a parish group for faith formation. Encourage a doubting person to seek out a priest or spiritual director. I believe Fr. David McGuigan, Fr. John Worgul and I are experienced in talking with people. We will respect decisions people make.

Pray Our Faith

Losing a loved one can be one of the most difficult experiences we have in our lives. St. Joseph Catholic Community's Bereavement Support Group aims to help people navigate through the journey of grieving a loved one. St. Joseph Catholic Community's Bereavement Support Group for the loss of a spouse, parent, sibling or friend will meet on the third Wednesday of the month from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Our next meeting will be November 16th. For more information or to register, please contact Biji James at 443-920-9107 or email [email protected]

SJCC’s Cancer Support Group holds mee ngs for people

whose lives have been touched by this disease. The SJCC Cancer Support Group’s

goals are to help people receive emo onal and

educa onal support throughout the experience with cancer. Even though

many people are supported by family and friends when

receiving a cancer diagnosis, the main reason they choose

to join a support group is to be with others with similar cancer experiences. The group offers a safe space to share feelings and challenges while at the same me, learning from

others who are facing similar situa ons.

SJCC’s Cancer Support Group meets on the 2nd and 4th

Thursdays of the month from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Rosary for

Life for those who have cancer takes place on the 1st

Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. or the 2nd

Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. following daily Mass.

For more informa on about the Cancer Support Group, please contact Biji James at

[email protected] or call 443-920-9107.

Meals are delivered on Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. Members are scheduled to cook, on average, 3 times per year. Wedding Bells for you or someone in your family ringing? The general information booklet for weddings at SJCC has been recently revised and is now available. If you or a family member are thinking of getting married at SJCC, pick up one of the booklets at the parish office or at the Welcome Table (after weekend Masses).

Book of the Dead—One of our parish and Church traditions is to place on the altar area a Book of the Dead to include names of deceased Christians. You are invited to list members of your family who have died in the past year and who you would like remembered in the prayers of the faithful at the weekend Masses.

SJCC Christmas Concert: The 2nd Annual Festival of Lessons & Carols will be held Friday, Dec 16, 2016, at 7 p.m. Mark your calendar now! The evening will include the music ensembles of SJCC, Christmas caroling, special music, Scripture readings, and reflections. Take some time away from the hustle and bustle to celebrate the real meaning of the season.

Have you ever had the Scriptures come alive to you through prayer? If any of these tug at your spirit, please consider signing up for our Advent Week of Guided Prayer that goes from Dec. 4 to Dec. 10. We would like to congratulate Nathan Bird, for his recent appointment to our new leadership role for the Altar Servers, as Trainer/Promotor. He will be responsible for training the new altar servers, as well as promoting and recruiting for this wonderful service to our church. Altar servers are such an important part of our church and we

encourage 5th graders and up to participate. If you would like more information, contact the Altar server coordinator, Linda Schwark @ [email protected]

Support Our Faith

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of November 12/13, 2016

In today’s gospel Jesus tells his followers

there will be plenty of time for them to bear witness to what he taught and did. He

helped them understand that the Holy Spirit would guide them and help them

persevere in their own stewardship of his gospel even when friends and family

betrayed them. Do our friends and neighbors, or classmates and colleagues, know we are disciples of Jesus Christ? How do we bear witness to Christ each day? Do we hide our faith out of fear of

rejection? Or are we bold in our witness to others? Are we good stewards of Christ’s

gospel?

Faith Direct

Why not make a change this fall in the way you generously support St.

Joseph Catholic Community? Sign up with

eGiving through Faith Direct, which is the most

convenient and secure way for you to make your weekly

offering to St. Joseph Catholic Community. Your

automatic contributions through Faith Direct will

save valuable time for both you and our parish staff. To

enroll, please visit Faith Direct's website

www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code MD80. You can also fill out and mail a

Faith Direct enrollment form from the parish office.

Thinking about a donation to St Joseph’s?

Did you know that one may donate appreciated stock to the St Joseph Catholic Community and get a tax deduction for the current market value and not have to sell the stock and pay the capital gains? A $5,000 cash gift and a gift of $5,000 in

appreciated securities both generate the same charitable deduction. But if you use publicly

traded stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that you have held for a year or longer to make your gift, you will receive an additional tax benefit: The IRS allows you to make your transfer to

the St Joseph Community without recognizing capital gains on the appreciation. You can thus leverage a larger donation than you could make with cash — and receive a larger tax benefit — by "buying low and giving high." If you need additional information on anything related to

planned giving, feel free to contact Bruce Good-win at 410 978-0260 or brucegood-
