KIWANIS ONE DAY:CHILDREN’S CENTER PROJECT

The Costa Mesa Kiwanis One Day, hosted by Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa High School and Estancia High School, is an event where students are given the opportunity to vol-unteer at the Children’s Center at OCC. Many volunteers assisted the faculty by creating new and patching up fences, cleaning windows, painting new projects, planting new veg-etables in the garden, and many more for the center.

My group members and I were given the job of cleaning the garden which included picking out weeds, pulling, categoriz-ing, and washing vegetables that were still edible, and plant-ing a few new additions to the garden. My group worked efficiently and we even had a system of rotating jobs within our groups. Besides the fact that I had completely forgotten to wear sunblock and worked outside in the hot, blazing sun for hours, I had an absolute great time working with the other members to help out the Children’s Center. We even bond-ed through talking about our hobbies and favorite TV shows as we washed the vegetables together.

If I were given the opportunity to volunteer at an event such as this again, I would love to do it! Not only did I enjoy this ex-perience, but I have gotten to know a little more about those I was able to work with. And as a bonus, I have a new found love for gardening! This might possibly be one of my favorite volunteer opportunities that I have ever done!

costa Mesa coMMunity run:

GOODIE BAG STUFFING

By Helen Nguyen | Kiwanis Family Chair

On Thursday, April 22nd, members from Orange Coast College Circle K had the opportunity to volunteer at an event called Goodie Bag Stuffing. This event was in prepa-ration of the Community Run on the follow-ing Saturday. We met inside Estancia High School and gathered together to stuff bags. It was a great opportunity to work with our Key Club, Circle K, and Kiwanis clubs in Costa Mesa also known as United K. During this event Circle K and Key Club members made an assembly line around a table filled with flyers and products from sponsors of the Community Run. While we filled the cinch bag with goodies, Kiwanians stood at each end of the tables to collect

them. We were able to fill out roughly a thousand cinch bags for the runners. It was a fun event because we created a race of our own by seeing who filled the most bags fastest. At the end of volunteering we were rewarded with FREE food- pizza and drinks. Overall it was a great event because we got to 1) volunteer and 2) work with our Kiwanis Family members. Circle K members enjoyed the fun bonding with our Key Clubs and Kiwanians. We even got to hear our advisor roast our VP of Service. I believe most of our members enjoyed this service project and so did I. I can’t wait to participate in an-other one like this!

Costa Mesa Community Run

By: Pow Hwa ChanSpirit & Entertainment Chair

An exciting event that I went to was the Costa Mesa Community Run. This event helps promote a healthy lifestyle and brings many benefits to education foundations in Costa Mesa. During this particular event, I was in charge of making sure that the runners who have already finished as well as family mem-bers do not cross the trail while the runners were still taking part in the run. While doing

this, I also got to cheer on the runners while they were on their way to the finish line. I really did enjoy the event because while I was volunteering, I was able to cheer on the runners as they cross the finish line. In the future, I would love to participate in the event again as I get to see many people as well as children take part in the run.

March oF diMes

March for Babies

By Allan Le | General MemberI went to the March of Dimes. The goal of the event is to fund vital research and programs to end premature birth, birth defects, and infant mortality through a walk around the Fashion Island area of Newport Beach. I was assigned the task of a parking usher at the event. I among the other Circle K attendees (both from OCC and from other schools like CSUF and GWC), were charged with directing traffic in and out of 2 parking structures.I enjoyed the event, since it is my second time doing it, and this time I ended up actually volunteering outside the walk instead of partaking in the walk itself. I would definitely do this again, since it was a memorable event the first time I did it in my senior year of Key Club and I’d like to come back and contribute alongside the future Key Clubbers and Circle K’ers.

Cal State Fullerton’s BanquetBy: Ivy Dang|General Member

The event I attended was Cal State Fullerton’s End of the Year Banquet. This event was held to com-memorate the term of the 2015-2016 year. Their club theme this past term was traveling, so for their ban-quet theme it was “ Welcome Home”. The banquet was about coming back home to reflect on the past term’s memories and achievements with their Ful-lerton Circle K family and guest. As well as showing appreciation to their seniors and wishing them luck in

their lives beyond their college years They also promoted the new term and what is to come this this upcoming year. When you first walk through the doors, you are struck with awe at the beautiful ball-room and the cute centerpieces and decorations that adorned the middle of each table. We got time before the event to catch up and socialize with friends and even make some new friends. The food served was so delicious that, dare I say it, I got thirds. We listened to Judy give out hilarious superlative to every member that attended the banquet. Watched a surprise dance performance from the “Village of Idiots”. Disclaimer: I didn’t call them that, they named themselves that. Then proceeded to watch old board get retired and new board get appointed by the IP Lieutenant Governor and this terms new Lieutenant Gov-ernor. Lastly we watched as Judy, the immediate past president, attempted to hold back tears as she read her speech. The night ended with people taking pictures with the back-drop and saying their goodbyes and congratulations. I very much enjoyed this event because throughout the year I have built strong rela-tionships with many of the people on board and in their club. It made me proud to be there and hear about the many accomplishments they’ve had throughout the year. I would like to come back to this event because I know this upcoming term will be amazing and I can’t wait to look back at it again a year from now.

MEET KIWANIAN

DR.RICH PAGEL

Dr. Rich Pagel is a Kiwanian of Costa Mesa.He works at Orange Coast College as the Vice President of Administration and teaches Higher Education at Califor-nia State University of Long Beach. What have you learned from being a Kiwanis? Kiwanis is a community. It’s where every-one comes together and work as a team to achieve one goal. It’s prepares leaders for the next generations. If you keep giv-ing your time and yourself, what you get in return is the fullfillment, content, for help-ing out your colleagues and community.

MEET KEY CLUBBER

CONNOR NGUYEN

Connor Nguyen was the 2015 - 2016 President of the Costa Mesa High School Key Club. He is currently a senior and will be transferring to University California of San Diego, majoring in psych. How did you get involved with Kiwanins? My first Key Club event was actually, the Children’s Center Project. My cousin took me to the event, and I KNEW NO ONE.

We think globally and act locally. We bring a global prespective to this club because of the diversity of people involved. That’s the best thing about community.Do you have any advice you’d like to leave for everyone? I think that you are on the right path right now, doing the right things. This can be applied throughout your whole life. It’s a framework of leadership to raise a family; build a communi-ty. We learn to organize, bring together for a common good. It’s simple. You have to keep going.

12

Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build them-selves as they build their schools and communities.

Kiwanis International offers three clubs for adults: Kiwanis, Aktion Club and Circle K International. Kiwanis clubs serve their communities by sponsoring 150,000 service projects each year.

Page 13: The Squeeze Volume 7, Issue 1

Speaking of Kiwanis Family Appreciation Month, the Kiwanis Family and Foundation commit-tee alongside past Kiwanis Family Chairs will be hosting a webinar about the Kiwanis Family! Don’t know how or who to appreciate? Attend this webinar and post for the social media challenge right after!

Netflix wasn’t that big yet, and I had no life. This was the sum-mer of 8th grade going into 9th grade. In 9th grade, I joined Key Club. I was a very active member freshman year, and eventually ran for board sophmore year. What have you learned from being a Kiwanis?I learned to be a leader. I got to tell them what to do and they got to listen. All these people are also trying to achieve leadership skills; having other responsibilities and how to plan accordingly. Before joining every club, people say “You know, IT’S REALLY FUN!”, and you don’t believe them. You just have to experience it before judging it. Do you have any advice you’d like to leave for everyone?Join if you actually want to help. Don’t join if you just want to look good. You have to want to make a change.

I love Mrs. Sheldon!Connor’s Advisor

Did you know that April is Kiwanis Appreciation Month? Our sponsoring and surrounding Kiwanis Clubs do so much for our organization. Circle K would not exist without Kiwanis. To thank them for all that they do, we set aside a month every year to show our appreciation.

Our Kiwanis Family Chair, Helen Nguyen, is putting together a video to show OCC CKI’s ap-preciation. She will be in the Open Study Room (located in the library)during her available times this upcoming week, so if you see her, go up to her to shoot a quick video of you show-ing your appreciation! We will also be making Thank You cards!

MAGIC KINGDOM TRAINER

At the Annual Magic Kingdom Trainer, we had a chance to interact with the rest of the division and learn new leadership skills. The day started off with activity that had us throw around tennis balls, to a very inspirational speech from our past Lieutenant Governor Phillip Chow, on the topic of Having a Positive Attitude in Circle K Interna-tional and Life. After Phillip Chow’s presentation, we were split into sections to meet our counterparts from other schools. We also learned from Peter Yu, the Magic Kingdom Regional Advisor, about Professional v Personal Relationships; keeping it professional between board and leaving personal issues aside and how to address someone if they are conflicting with problems. Finally, the day geared towards workshops held by stu-dents. Andy Nguyen on Public Relations and Angelina Chan on Balancing Personal & Professional Life and CKI. All in all, that day was a pretty fun and successful one!

District Conventionby: Mariella Batacan | Charitable Fundrasising Chair

I went to District Conven-tion 2016 and it was my first district event ever since I joined Circle K. This event was to recognize all the accomplishments that each school has done throughout the year. It is an event where schools from Cali-fornia, Nevada, and Hawaii come together to celebrate the wonder-ful year they had. It was the time to congratulate all individuals who went above and beyond through-out the year. At District Convention, I vol-unteered as a Sergeant at Arms on Saturday night/morning. My shift was from 1-2 am and what I did was to walk around the floor that I was assigned and make sure that

there’s no loud noises around or students yelling from across the hall and stuff. I did enjoy the event, it was really fun and a new experience for me. I met new peo-ple which was a step up for me since I’m not really out-going. I went to a dance workshop with was funny and tiring. Funny because I was able to see other people struggle like I did and tiring because I’m not fit so all the dancing, moving left, right, up, down was tiring for me. Overall I would definitely go next year because I want to meet more people and attend more workshops.
