Editor's Notes

In the Fall of 1992 I took over theeditorship of the Bddt€ ftom the inde-fatigable Tom M,€rs. Nearly fouryearslater it is time I passed on the responsi-bilities to another talend individual,Colin Holman, conductor of the llli.nobBlass Ban4 who will be suppoftedby another resourceful person in ourNABBA famil, Board member CeorgeFoster.

The change in leadership will be effec-tive our next issue, following the Cclumbus contest. Please note in the boxbelow all lhe address chanSes for sub-mitting materials!

I will still be involved with the Bridg€as reviewer of recordings and books.Paul Droste continues as new musiceditor and Tom Palmatier continueswith advertising.

While ithasnotbeenan easy task, ithastteen an eni)yable one maintaining ourjoumal as sornething of which we canproud. The success of the Eridte isultimately in the hands of the member-ship of NABBA. The deglee to whichthey participabe in iB pages is ditical.

So, one last time, keep sending yourprograms and reports! Remember, wealso send matedals received into theNABBA Archir€s.

I hoF now to have time to get my nextbook finished: Brass Ban ds of The Salw-tbn Anfiy, to be published by EgonPublishers some trme in the not toodistant future.

I would be amiss if I did not acknowl-edge, before signing oft the invaluablework and skill of Lynette Owens, whohas been type-setting the Brldge forthesc past four years. To all of you thathave been kindly supportive and en-couraging to me in this job - thankyou!

President's Podium

When NABBA gatheF in Colunibuswhat will we attempting to achieve? No doubt for some, it is all about win-ning that banner and trophy. Fortu-natel, NABBA has escaped in largemeasure the bitter, sour bickering thatcan a(ompany contests and their rc-sults. Is it all just a competition?

I hope NABBA members come to Co-lumbus, above all, to make the bestmusic they can, Also, that they learnf rom the o0rcrband gthatperf orm, bothin terms of perfoniance gtyle and lit-elature. In addition, friendships will berenewed or stard, our fellowshiD en-riched as we share our triumphs, ourstruggles, and our hopes for the futureof excellent brass bands.

There is no qusdon that our contesthas b€en the single mogt effectlve con-tributor to the rapld rise in our stan-dard of play. Large distanc€s still keepmany of our excellent and very active

bands away ftom the yearly meetin&however, NABBA must reach out innew and exciting wa)s to help insurecomplete health throughout the orga-nizatioD via regional festivalsand con-tests, shared guest dinicians/soloists,sumnEr wmkshops and training s€s-srcns.

We can realize that vision by havingsEong Board mernbeE. You have anopportunity again b norninate or helpnominate quality, acti!€ members, viathe form included in this issue. Get in toBert Wiley as soon as you can.

Likewise, be a brasr band evangelist, copy the NABBA membership formand send it round to folks you knowwould enjoy being members.

I have no doubt that NABBA XMnColumbus will be a real peak experi-ence for us all, Much work is going intothe effort, espedally from our hosts in

the BBC, especially Paul Droste and Dr.Jeff Kelle!, principal trombone theBBCand dircclorofbands at Dublin CofftnanHigh School, our contest site. The won-dertully jammed schedule, due to therecord number of bands and soloists, should prove outstanding, Fovidedwe all keep cornmunicating and helFing one another deal with the delight-fully crowded schedule.

Remember, you can leam ftom everymusical group, musical composition, conducbor, soloisL that you hear inColumbus. Make it an effichine andennobling time together.
