The St. Anthony Fraternity Newsletter Fraternity #101 Volume 19 Issue 11 November 2016 Minister’s Message OFS Rule Article 19: Mindful that they are bearers of peace which must be built up unceasingly, they should seek out ways of unity and fraternal harmony through dialogue, trusting in the presence of the divine seed in everyone and in the transforming power of love and pardon. Messengers of perfect joy in every circumstance, they should strive to bring joy and hope to others. Since they are immersed in the resurrection of Christ, which gives true meaning to Sister Death, let them serenely tend toward the ultimate encounter with the Father. Dear Sisters and Brothers: We sing and pray the “Peace Prayer” (Make me an instrument of your peace…) attributed to St. Francis. Do we really pay attention to the words? Article 19 of our rule challenges us to be “mindful” of our call to be bearers of peace – unceasingly. In 1979, the National Assistants Commission (now the Conference of National Spiritual Assistants) prepared commentary on the OFS Rule. Specifically for Article 19: “A particularly Franciscan ministry is peace-making. Peace grows out of the search for personal integrity and harmony with others and the discovery of God’s presence everywhere. It is built up by affirming oneself, seeing others as revealers of God’s love, taking a positive approach to solutions, and communicating constantly with the Lord. It is putting aside all thought of violence and embracing a largeness of heart. The result of peace is joy and hope. A special application of this ministry of peace-making is preparing for death at which time a person arrives at the ultimate encounter with God and an eternal peace in his presence that fulfill the earthly quest for peace.” Peace starts with ourselves – don’t be violent to ourselves. Once peace gets rooted in our hearts, then we are better able to spread it to each person we encounter. Often the last part of this rule puzzles members – does it really fit in? Trusting in God’s peace and plan for us, we should be at peace accepting all that God gives us, even our encounter with Sister Death. This article also challenges us to serve as peace-makers even after death. We will be focusing on some practical ways to apply this part of Article 19 during our November gathering. I look forward to our exchange. For this month of November, we will remember our fraternity members who have passed away. In the past year, Maria Trujillo and John Mares met Sister Death. Let us unite our prayer in thanksgiving for these and all our other fraternity members, living and deceased. In Christ, Jane It’s November…What are you thankful for? God has blessed us with so much. This day (and every day) is the right time to reflect on those gifts and to be open to sharing with others. FRANCISCAN SAINT By Gerry Rohrkemper, OFS Ludwig fully supported her efforts at sanctity. He found her the highly regarded, if severe, confessor, Conrad of Marburg. She was renowned for her prayer life, and for her loving service to the poor, the sick and the lepers. She became the first German Third Order Franciscan-- St. Francis sent her one of his cloaks. Elizabeth was devastated when Ludwig died suddenly. Her in-laws, who found her lifestyle excessive, would let her stay only on their terms. Unable to agree, she and her three children left. She spent the remaining four years of her life living among the poor. She died in 1231 at age 24. With St. Louis IX, she is the patroness of Secular Franciscans. For more on Elizabeth’s life, I recommend: Elizabeth of Hungary: a Story of Twenty-Four Years, by Nesta de Robeck (Tau Publishing : c2013, 1954). Besides giving a detailed background on life in 13 th century Germany, it explains her complex relationships with her confessor and her in-laws. The appendices contain the documents leading to her canonization. The icon is the work of Lewis Williams, OFS. On November 17, we celebrate the feast of Elizabeth of Hungary. Daughter of the King of Hungary, she was raised in the household of her betrothed, Ludwig of Thuringia. The two were known for their deep mutual love.
