Cürner Baptism Have We Received?1v-r’• .
: The Reverend Nathanael Saint-Pierre
We know a tree by its fruit. There is a point when we can claim we are baptized but our actions speak
; louder than our words. As we celebrate today the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ, we need to be
reminded of our own baptism and make sure it was an effective moment of transformation and conver
sion. As it is written in the Book of Acts, Paul met disciples in Ephesus and he felt compelled to ask
them “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” Why did he ask the question?
Was it because their behavior was incorrect or unchristian? Did he feel that their actions were not ex
in line with or inspired by the Holy Spirit? Is it appropriate, today, to ask the question to our-
Have we received the Holy Spirit when we became believers?
Baptism, I have to admit, has become for many a tradition to perpetuate, a simple formality to repli
cate, and an ongoing practice that Christians have been doing routinely and that we pass on. As pas
tors/clergy, we sometimes have to be very diplomatic and liberal about the rules and regulations re
garding baptism and the candidates. While we don’t want to refuse access to anyone, people are so busy nowadays that conver
sations before Baptism with candidates and sponsors to educate them about what they are getting themselves into, are limited or
occasionally nonexistent. We don’t emphasize enough what a pivotal/capital moment Baptism is in our spiritual life. The moment
we enter onto a new path, but mostly, a moment we offer ourselves to God and become a vessel for the Holy Spirit. Baptism is a
frontier where darkness ends and light begins. A wind from God was hovering on the waters when darkness covered the earth and
God said: “Let there be light.” Our baptism is our passing to the light, a moment of allegiance to God.
The Baptism of Jesus was a PUBLIC moment of acknowledgement during which God was able to reveal the real identity of Jesus
to a doubting nation; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” Our baptism is,
as a mailer of fact, the public moment we are officially adopted by God to be his children and not just creatures. This is one of the
reasons why Baptism and Confirmation in the Episcopal Church are not PRIVATELY administered. They are public offerings, pub-
lic expressions and affirmations of our faith, but also public commitments and acceptances of a testament/contract between our
maker and us.
As we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord today, may it be for us an occasion to answer to the following:
1 . What is the meaning of our Baptism? Have we received more than new clothes? Was it just an occasion to celebrate, to just
have a party?
2. What is the meaning of our Confirmation? Was it just a later social occasion to repeat the party celebrated at Baptism and to tell
the grown-up we have become that this is the way things are done and should remain?
3. Did we receive the Holy Spirit when we became believers?
It is not a baptismal certificate that will provide answers to these questions nor the form our baptism has taken (immersion, asper
sion, adult or children, or other). It is the transformation that the Holy Spirit has been able to manifest in us that will define who we
have BECOME. A baptized human being is a changed human being, a new human being who has become a citizen of the King-

dom where Jesus is the king. We demonstrate we have received the Holy Spirit when we live in love as Christ has loved us and
gave himself to God as an offering and sacrifice. We cannot receive the Holy Spirit when we are too full of pride, when we seek
self-promotion, when our agenda is not for the common good. Let us empty ourselves of anything
that might prevent the Holy Spirit from using us. Let us empty ourselves so that we can hear the voice of God saying: “You are
my daughters and sons, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Genesis 1:1-5
God, who existed before aD time, catts the wortd into being through his
divine creative power. God’s tife-giving act brings tight amid the
darkness.
A reading (lesson) from the Book of Genesis:
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the
earth was a formtess void and darkness covered the face of the
deep, white a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.
Then God said, “Let there be tight”; and there was tight. And God
saw that the tight was good; and God separated the tight from the
darkness. God catted the tight Day, and the darkness he catted
Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Acts 19:1-7
Paut baptizes new betievers in the name of the living Lord Jesus. They are
thereby anointed by God himsetf and they manifest the gifts of the Spirit.
A reading (lesson) from the Acts of the Aposttes:
White Apottos was in Corinth, Paut passed through the interior regions and
came to Ephesus, where he found some disciptes. He said to them, “Did
you receive the Hoty Spirit when you became betievers?” They reptied,
“No, we have not even heard that there is a Hoty Spirit.” Then he said,
“Into what then were you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’s
baptism.” Paut said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance,
tetting the peopte to betieve in the one who was to come after him, that
is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus. When Paut had taid his hands on them, the Hoty Spirit came upon
them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied-- attogether there were
about twetve of them.

Mark 1:4-11
Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan River. Anointed by the Hoty Spirit,Jesus hears a heaven[y voice proclaim that he is God’s beloved Son.
A reading (tesson) from the Gospet according to Mark:
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proctaiming a baptism ofrepentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judeancountryside and alt the peopte of Jerusalem were going out to him, andwere baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now Johnwas c[othed with camet’s hair, with a teather bett around his waist, andhe ate tocusts and wild honey. He proc[aimed, “The one who is morepowerfut than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down anduntie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he wittbaptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Gatitee and was baptized byJohn in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, hesaw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you Iam wett pteased.”
