Snatcher of Fire Laurens van der Post

I imagine how you stealthily enter The lit hearth of early humankind, Capturing a small flame from the fire And gleefully storing it in your heart. There it merges with your great love To be forever a blaze of devotion, A blend of warmth, passion, and zeal. No wonder the flame of Pentecost Ignited the disciples into ardent action. You instill our hearts with similar fervor.

Today: I respond to the Fire in my heart.

St. Paul’s Foundation As members and adherents of St. Paul’s United Church you are a part of St. Paul’s Foundation. Mark your calendars to attend the Annual General Meeting (in a Zoom call) on Sunday, June 14, at 12 noon. If you would like to be part of the meeting, please let us know at [email protected] and you will receive the paperwork and the Zoom invitation in your email.

The St. Paul’s Foundation, a non-for-profit society, was established when the three apartment buildings next door to St. Paul’s were sold. The church had purchased the apartments in the early 1970’s from the original owners who had built them in the late 1950’s and offered them to the church at a fair price to continue to manage them and pay careful attention to maintain reasonable rents for their tenants - mainly students and seniors with limited incomes. The St. Paul’s Foundation assumed ownership, management and administrative responsibility for the apartments until it was evident that the 50-year old buildings needed major renovation. The decision was made to sell the apartments in 1999, and the proceeds were invested by the Foundation under a management agreement with the Edmonton Community Foundation, who is authorized to administer the Fund for the benefit of the St. Paul’s Foundation. As per their original agreement with the apartment builders, the Foundation strives to support housing and shelter related projects for people in need. A percentage of the funds are distributed semi-annually to various social agencies in Edmonton and surrounding area who apply for funds to support housing initiatives. The Allocation Committee reviews the applications and makes their recommendations to the Board, who gives final approval for the grants.

We are pleased to report that in 2019 the Foundation distributed over $93,000 to non-profit organizations who applied for our support. The Board members of the St. Paul’s Foundation and the Allocation Committee are made up of members of St. Paul’s and those approved for membership by the Foundation. The Foundation members are honoured and delighted to be able to help so many people in the Edmonton area thanks to the foresight of past church members and boards. To date the Foundation has given away over 1.6 million dollars since 1999. What a wonderful task and privilege.
