Celebrating Customer Service WeekFrom 3rd – 7th October 2016 colleagues across the business celebrated National
Customer Service week in their offices or on site with a range of activities.
National Customer Service Week is a week long opportunity to raise awareness of
customer service and the vital role it plays in successful business practice and
the growth of the UK economy.
We’ve provided a snapshot of the week in the middle of the magazine; from
activities, to money raised through fun events. Thank you to everyone who took
part and helped to raise awareness of the importance of customer service.
Please add the 2017 dates of 2nd – 6th October to your diary.

Monday 17 October marked a very special occasion at the Harefield office. Our
fantastic new staff restaurant opened its doors for business. Family
members, friends and colleagues joined together in the conservatory to watch
as restaurant naming competition winner, Steve Potter, Supervisor, Total
Mobile cut the ribbon.
Steve said: “It was an honour and a privilege for my suggestion to be picked
by Kevin, Dermot and the Clancy family. And a fitting tribute to the Man who,
if it wasn’t for him, none of us would be here today!”
Log in to the hub to see some of the pictures and watch our opening
ceremony video.

In September we supported Southern Waters seventh annual
HS&W conference, which took place at East Sussex National Golf
Resort, Uckfield.
Seamus Keogh opened the event with a presentation on best
practice and the HSE journey of a family business from the early
days of MJ Clancy & Sons, through to present day and of course
onwards to 2020.
Inside the conference the theme for our stand was ‘Communication
is King’, highlighting how communication can impact both positively
and negatively on Health, Safety and Wellbeing.
Outside, Steve Davies was demonstrating Clancy Plants latest
development, the new plant safety zone system. The system links
a helmet mounted transmitter to a receiver built in to an
excavator. This alerts the operator to someone entering the
exclusion zone allowing the plant to be stopped preventing
potential injury.
Special thanks to George Foulger, Simon Bell, Sam Greensitt, Juan
Riberio, Michael Zawadzki , Sam Hendrie, Steve Davies, James
knight, Ian Holt, Gavin Elon, Chris Brookes , Andy Bareham, who
supported arrangements for the event.

Out with the old(water pipes)We recently started work on
Southern Water's £8million
project to replace water mains
in parts of Chatham, Gillingham
and Rochester.
The work will include replacing
28km of 85-year-old water mains
and we will also replace service
pipes. The project started in
August and will take 18 months to
complete. The mains and services
are being replaced due to water
quality issues and this is the
second phase of Southern Water’s
improvement plan for the area.
Senior Contract Manager Denver
Knight stated “The deadlines for
this scheme are tight and in
order for us to ensure a smooth
delivery we need to be very
efficient, at the forefront of our
planning approach is the
customer”. Andy Bird, Project
Manager added “Although we
cannot avoid disruption we will be
doing our upmost to ensure
customers have a positive
experience while we are in the
area during delivery”.
Charity golf dayBrendan Mitson, Aaron Ransom and Jason Platt played in a charity
golf day recently to raise funds for Dragonfly Bereavement Fund,
a local charity in East Sussex, where we have our biggest contract
with Southeast Water. Clancy Docwra sponsored the number 9
hole at the event, which raised over £5000 for the charity.

Our Great Place to Work focus groups started in
November. These meetings are a chance for us, the
HR team, to dive deeper into the feedback you
provided in response to our employee survey in April.
So far we’ve had 15 focus groups, with over 180
colleagues. Thank you to everyone who has
participated in one of our focus groups, your
feedback is extremely important to us.
In the New Year we’ll provide an update on how we’re
using your feedback to make The Clancy Group an
even better place to work.
Multi Utility to the rescue
A Great Place to Work
I recently interviewed Danny Holt and Joe Fisher, to find out
about their heroic efforts when they rescued a young boy
from a burning property.
The pair are working on the latest Multi Utility job in Shinfield,
Reading and started their day just like any other, until Danny
noticed a young boy, frantically cycling past them.
Danny said “I didn’t think much of it at first, but then weheard a lot of commotion and swearing coming from thehouse opposite and noticed smoke coming from thebathroom window. I called 999, while Joe and I ran over tothe property. Upstairs we found the same young ladgrabbing water from the bathroom and running to thebedroom to put out the fire.
As I led the boy down the stairs, he panicked as he’d left hisLizzard in the house, I quickly ran back to get the lizard! ThenI took the boy downstairs and tried to keep him calm untilthe paramedics arrived”.
The young boy was taken to hospital, and released later
that evening. Danny and Joe picked up some Krispy Kreme
donuts and paid him a visit the following morning. The boy
was shaken but made a full recovery.
Leadership team meetingOur final Leadership event of 2016 took place at the
beginning of December. The team spent a great day together
reviewing our performance against our KPI’s, discussing
challenges for the coming year and participating in a few
team building exercises. Look out for the video highlights on
The Hub soon.

A thrilling Halloween/firework displaySaturday 29 October was our Clancy
Group Halloween/fireworks display held
in the grounds of Clare House. The event
was attended by over 430 colleagues,
family members and friends. It was a
great evening, the weather was kind and
the Bonfire was lit by Sandy Hooson-
Jones the Harefield Rainbows
leader/Brownies Brown Owl. We had a
fantastic fireworks display, spooky face
painting by Hannah Lewin from Clancy
Plant and a children’s Halloween fancy
dress competition judged by the Clancy
family Kevin, Dermot, Mary and Doreen.
Some of our fancy dress winners were
Emily Randall, Harvey Frost, Ava Blake,
Macy Snook and Grace Cox, however all
the children who dressed up in fancy
dress were winners with proud parents
and families admiring their costumes
and make up. We had some fantastic
adult outfits too (see picture on the
right) with some of our staff showing a
completely different side to their
normal calm and rational behaviours!
The event raised around £2,000 from
ticket sales and the raffle proceeds
and the money will be donated to
MacMillan Cancer Support and the
Harefield Rainbows, Brownies, Cubs &
Scouts. We would like to thank all our
volunteer helpers who made the event
such a success and especially Tracy
Blake for all her hard work with
organising and dealing with the
administration of the event including
ticket sales. We would also like to thank
our Suppliers who kindly donated the
fantastic raffle prizes including Reflex,
MGF, Andrew Sykes, HE Services, PSS,
Groundforce, Obart pumps, D J Haulage,
Lombard Asset Finance and OCS.
Thank you all for a great night.

WHO THEYARE
Garry Jones, Regional Transport Manager has been
developing and implementing a new van weight
calculator that has recently been circulated within the
Traffic Management division across Scottish and
Eastern areas. Ensuring the vans have the correct
weight on-board will assist the group with Work safe =
Home safe as an overweight vehicle is not only
dangerous but illegal. The brakes and tyres don’t
perform adequately on an overweight vehicle affecting
the grip and overall balance especially as we head
towards winter and the roads become wetter. In
addition, the weight calculator will reduce the scope for
on the spot fines for drivers, improve overall fuel
consumption and reduce unnecessary wear and tear.
Garry is now working on a similar calculator for the rest
of the gangs which is proving a little more challenging due
to the volume of equipment they carry on board their
vans. Its pleasing to see that all of the drivers and
managers involved in this piece of work so far have been
extremely willing, positive and happy to improve the safety
of the vehicles they are responsible for.
There are many benefits but the main message is
Work safe= Home safe 100% of the time with no
exceptions.

A letter drop had occurred prior to commencement
of works and the team from Clancy Docwra, led by
Tony Ireland, arrived on site and contacted the local
residents in the vicinity of the works informing of
them their progress.

A long service championWe have some fantastic colleagues working withinour Clancy family and as we approach the festiveseason, a particular person springs to mind. SeniorProject Manager, Tony O’Toole based in BartsSquare, Farringdon, has worked for Clancy Docwrafor over 43 years. Tony came over from Ballinrobe,Co.Mayo in November 1970, a week after his 18thBirthday. He worked in a factory and for a roadsurfacing company before joining Clancy Docwra.Since then he has worked in each and every divisionof the company and has become somewhat of amentor to many people on site. Over the years hehas seen many changes from the introduction oftechnology to general plant and equipment nowused on site. Next year Tony will be retiring fromClancy and is planning to continue with his passionfor Archery, ten pin bowling and travelling aroundthe world. But for now, Tony is concentrating on avery important task.
Lighting up ChristmasEach year, just before the beginning of DecemberTony spends about 8 weekends draping lights onevery roof, wall and tree that he can find in oraround his home. (If you stand still for longenough, you too could end up covered in LEDs andbe part of the display!) This year Tony is set toput up around 27 thousand lights. While Tony isbusy outside, his wife Linda decorates the insideof their home with a different colour theme each
year. Last year was white, this year is purple and pinkand Linda’s learning how tomake huge paper flowers inthose colours.
On 3 December they invite allof their family, friends andneighbours over to enjoy aglass of mulled wine and mince pies to celebratethe official switching on of the lights. Their home isthen opened up to visitors, who come from all overthe world to see the impressive festive light display, which gets switched on each evening throughoutDecember, until 6 January 2017.
This amazing effort is all to raise vital funds for acharity close to Tony’s heart, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.Tony’s niece, Siobhan, has been suffering from thedisease since birth, now 30years old, she is proof thatthe money raised saves lives through research andlifesaving treatments. Over the last 14 years Tony hasraised an impressive £40,000 for the trust. Tony’scolleague, Trisha Molloy said: “Tony is a true gent, hegives up his own time to help others on a daily basisand he is going to be a massive loss to the companywhen he retires next year. As a team here in Barts wehave grown increasingly close to Tony over the past12 months, hence why we are trying our best to pushthrough the goal set by him on the Just giving page”

Example of great customer service witnessed during the week.
At Church Road, Catsfield, Sussex a metering gang (P.Hobs and C.Camble) had to close the footpath to install a meter. An elderly lady with a wheeled Zimmer frame came along the footpath and stopped. I witnessed both members of the team stop what they
were doing and proceed to escort the lady across the road - she replied with a smile and a thank you.
S&M gang (J.Whitling and B.Annis) digging in the road adjacent to multiple customer drives. Upon arriving, the gang were helping
drivers manoeuvre out of their drives by providing verbal instructions. Both customers replied with a thanks for the help.
I visited a gang on the SEW R&M contract in Bracknell who were installing new meters and stopcocks. I discussed CS week with them and knocked on a customer’s door - I didn’t get his name but he was very happy with the gang, who had informed him of the work being completed and commented he was impressed
with their professionalism. ‘A complement indeed’.

Improving construction in 24hrs This year’s Construction News Summit saw the first ever 24-hour Tech Sprint hackathonfrom 11 – 12 October. This involved four teams, each required to come up with a technologybased solution that could help improve the efficiency of construction.
HackathonA Hackathon is a design
sprint-like event in which
computer programmers
and others involved in
software development,
collaborate intensively on
software projects.
Team members Manual Dove, Rydon
 Francesca Falzon, Rise
 Fabrizio Magistrelli,
The Clancy Group
 Edward Olivier, Bam Nuttall
 Michael Percival, Van Elle
 Dan Rossiter, BRE
 Louise Shaw, Arcadis
 Lee Walters, Galliford Try
Fabrizio Magistrelli, ERP Analyst based in Harefield attended the event
at Bankside Hilton London. He joined Team Diversity to tackle the
challenge of trying to find realistic idea that would be truly innovative in
our industry.
Fabrizio said “We began our brainstorming at 4pm, discussing thecommon issues that each of us face in the workplace. Thereoccurring themes were lack of knowledge, inefficient processes andtoo much paperwork!”
A brisk walk around the streets of London at 2am gave the team an
inspiration boost (and helped to wake them up). After some further
brainstorming the team came up with ‘Smart Site’. A site that would
change the way the industry works by creating a software platform,
which would hold all the data about a work site that anyone could ever
need, in one easy-to-find place. The team re-fuelled with much needed
bacon rolls and a few large cups of coffee before putting together
their presentation.
Dan from CRB opened their pitch Dragon den style, saying; “We’relooking for £20m for five per cent of our business.” The judges liked the
idea, and said they felt there was a ‘clear need’ for more solutions like
this. Victory went to Team 4, for their idea to sell concrete using the
‘Uber’ model.
Fabrizio said “It was one of the best experiences I’ve had. Thank youClancy group for allowing me to participate in this fantastic event, hopefully we can attend similar events in the future.”

IT update
We’re always trying new things to improve ourperformance; here are a few innovation projectswe have in the pipeline:
OneDesk Planning: Clancy Docwra is spearheading the
implementation of this new approach to planning in the
Infrastructure Alliance.
CCIS Maps system: our Clancy Mobile devices allow us to
monitor jobs real-time.
Vac Excavations for Water Leaks: minimal excavation
method currently being tested with our alliance partners
at Anglian Water.
Tableau + IFS Integration for data visualisation and
analytics: we’re trying different ways to make sense and
visualise data.
Project 1984: we are trying to decode patterns in the
movements of water operatives to extract information
about their performance and safety.
Roadmender Version 2.0: an improved Roadmender that
incorporates the mixing drum into a low flatbed truck.
Hydrogen Fuel Additives: it has been tested for the past
couple of months aiming at reducing carbon emissions
and fuel costs.
Reinstatement Colour Blocks: aimed at reducing
reinstatement defects and coring, currently being used
in South East Water.
Improving performancethrough innovation
At the beginning of November, the Innovation Incubator
Group (Tim Edwards, Steve Davies, and Alvaro Montenegro)
organised a taster innovation workshop with Mark Shayler
from This is Ape. Mark has worked with the likes of Coca
Cola, Nike, and Samsung on innovation and sustainability.
A number of colleagues from across the group tackled
common problems with innovative thinking. Starting with
our core values and having in mind competitors and
technological trends, the different groups brainstormed
and then pitched the best ideas to take us beyond 2020.
The day finished with three excellent ‘pitches’ each with a
very different theme. Now the Incubator Group is tasked
to take these ideas to the next stage and foster creative
thinking in the wider business.

Keeping up to date with the latest
technological ideas and developments within
our industry is vital to our success. Recently,
our innovation team, along with Seamus Keogh
(Clancy Docwra CEO) and Graham Jones
(Clancy Plant General Manager) paid a visit to
BT Adastral Park innovation campus.
During the visit the team discussed new and
emerging technologies that will influence the
Clancy Group’s system integration and
innovation strategies over the forthcoming
years. Steve Kempt, head of customer loyalty
with BT Innovate and Design, hosted the day and
identified specific areas of key research that
could aid our complex operational activities.
Close working relationships with
establishments such as BT Global Research
are fundamental to identifying, understanding
and implementing cutting edge technologies
within our operations. Moreover they offer a
valuable insight as to how our operations and
activities will be performed in the years to
come ensuring that every working moment is
tailored to safety, quality and sustainability.
Among all the presentations delivered by BT’s panelof experts, the following were of special interest:
RFID asset tracking systems that have thepotential to identify and pinpoint every singleasset at any given location,
Stride applications, an innovative mobileapplication that guides the user through essentialvehicle pre-use checks,
Eco Drive - monitors driver behaviour in real timewhich is used to reduce fuel consumption andcarbon emissions and
Field Force Operations - a powerful software suitethat ensures the correct resources are deployedto a given situation such as a site breakdown orsimply performing planned maintenance.

Solving an operational dilemmaFor the past twelve months Clancy Plant, along with
Clancy Docwra have been trialling the Roadmender
250. A roadmender is similar to a cement mixer but
with a heated element. This purpose built mobile
asphalt batching plant is designed to heat and mix up
to 200 Kg’s of Hot-Mix Asphalt every 10 to 15minutes. The finished mix is no different to premium
grade asphalt collected from a traditional plant, but
using the Roadmender 250 delivers significant
operating efficiencies, performance benefits and
cost savings for The Clancy Group and its customers.
Clancy Plant have now developed a vehicle mounted
Roadmender so that the same vehicle can carry the
raw material, the Roadmender and tow a trailer
with the roller. This will provide greater efficiencies
by making it a one vehicle operation. The first
vehicle mounted Roadmender has been delivered to
work on the Anglian Water contract.
The rapid adoption of this innovative idea
demonstrates the commitment by Clancy Plant to
listen to its customers’ needs and act on them to
deliver the most cost effective operating solution.
A Roadmender 250 can... Make durable, long-lasting asphalt hot-mix
- In just the quantity needed
- At the correct temperature for ideal
compaction
- Directly at the job site, with no waste
- Without the need to visit an asphalt plant
Alan Barr, Anglian Water’s ReinstatementManager, South commented:
“I personally feel the Roadmender has added
another dimension to our ability to meet our
customer’s needs , it has changed the game when
it comes to out of hours and constrained works,
the material it produces is 1st class every single
time which is something that can’t always be
guaranteed from the plants”.

The replacement work was requested after the old
main burst on two separate occasions, most
recently in 2014; both times causing major flooding
and damage to properties on the estate. Tenants
whose properties suffered extensive damage only
moved back in this April.
A team of 12 Clancy Docwra colleagues started work
on site in June 2015. Site engineer George
Thuyanesan was responsible for conducting site
surveys and marking up locations on the drawings to
show the area where the team would be excavating.
It was decided that the new project would lay the
pipes away from the housing estate, to reduce the
risk of any further flooding.
Community involvement
Roger and the team have kept local businesses and
the community up to date on all of the work they’ve
been carrying out. In particular the local BMW
factory who are based in the vicinity of the site and
also Oxfordshire Highways, due to the significant
extent of traffic management required to keep the
locally impacted public ‘on the move’. Disruption has
been kept to a minimum and it should be mentioned
that they’ve received no complaints regarding the
work, which is a fantastic achievement.
Challenges
The contract was originally due to end 3 months ago,
however the team hit a setback when they came
across solid rock, occurring at various depths, from
2.5 metres down to as far as 8 metres down. Up until
this point they had been tunnelling up to 10 metres a
week, work slowed dramatically while trying to cut
through the rock and the team could only proceed at
0.5 metres per week, which was incredibly
frustrating, as they made good progress until that
point. The team had to persevere with the slow
progress for 10 weeks, until they eventually hit sand
which allowed them to resume normal progress.
A joint venture with OptimiseFor the last 16 months Clancy Docwra have been working as a joint venture partner of Optimise on a ThamesWater project to replace 2Km of 24inch cast iron water mains in Cowley, Oxfordshire. This has been one ofour largest joint venture projects to date, and with the project now in its final stages, I paid a visit to RogerThatcher, Optimise Project Manager, to find out how it’s all gone.

As some of the children who attend the local
school were affected by the previous flooding,
the project team ran a competition for the
children to name the tunnel boring machine
(TBM) that would be used in the construction.
They also designed a character that would be
displayed on the machine. Roger and the team
chose four lucky winners and they were invited
to site to see the machine and sit safely inside it.

We recently had an incident
involving a cyclist and one of
our vans on a busy road.
Thankfully on this occasion no
one was hurt.
So let’s use this opportunity
to ThinkSafe when out and
about on the roads, as we
want to make sure we all go
home safe and healthy every
single day.
Don’t let yourself bedistracted while drivingPlease visit The Hub to read our Distracted Driving Policy. If you
cannot access The Hub, please request a copy from your line
manager or by e-mailing [email protected].
All colleagues who operate a company or private vehicle for work
purposes must make themselves aware of their responsibilities
whilst driving.
There have been a number of recent news reports about drivers
who have been prosecuted for using hand held mobile phones or in-
vehicle devices whilst driving. A lorry driver has been imprisoned for
6 years and banned from driving for 10 years; he crashed into
oncoming traffic and killed an off-duty police officer moments after
opening a text message on his mobile phone. Another lorry driver,
who killed a mother and three children while distracted by scrolling
through music selections on his phone, has been jailed for 10 years;
the lorry driver was travelling at 50mph when he ploughed into a
stationary queue of two lorries and four smaller vehicles.
To ensure we all go home safe and healthy every single day, please
remember to Drive Safe when you’re behind the wheel.

As the project is now in the final weeks,
the Clancy Docwra team has been
reduced to seven members and they are
concentrating on connections and
disconnections, the final parts of the
commissioning process, where the
scheme will finally become fully
operational, making the potential for any
future flooding incidents, far less of a risk.

Here are our latest graduates, who spent
the second week of October at our
Harefield offices. “ “
I have really enjoyed joining Clancy Docwra and
feeling part of the Clancy family. The week itself was
well planned - I'd like to specially thank Rosa Boston
and Kyle Ingram for making our introduction into the
company very welcoming and enjoyable. We gained a
good understanding the business and how it
operates, it was nice for them to include a group
activity such as Topgolf. I really think that helped
ease our week and to also spend time with the
other graduates - who are all great! I look forward
to learning more about the business, jumping into
different roles and meeting Clancy colleagues from
every aspect of the business.Gaz Deol
Apprentices and GraduatesOur 2016 apprentice and graduate schemes are now well underway.
The nine new apprentices have spent one week at
college for their first block and have completed their
first unit, on Health and Safety legislation and
practices.
They came to Harefield for their company induction
the following week and completed a comprehensive
schedule of awareness sessions on topics including
Customer Service, Think Safe and H&S, as well
mandatory training in Water Hygiene, Service
Avoidance and Manual Handling.
They are now on site at locations across all three regions, from Scotland, Anglia,
Thames, South East and Sutton and East Surrey Water Contracts.
Following an extensive recruitment campaign earlier in the
summer, our final four graduates joined the business on the new
Graduate Programme. They will be following a plan of rotation
across the business over the next two years, starting with first
placements at UKPN, South East and Anglian Water.
During the course of their two weeks induction, they have had sessions giving them valuable insight into many
areas of the business including H&S and well-being, environmental, bids & tenders, Clancy Hub and
management systems, training & development and customer service.
