Dear St Michael's College Community

SEMESTER 1 As Semester 1 draws to a close, it is important to remember that learning programs and activities are still on-going for most students.

R-9 programs continue through to the end of term, while Years 10 and 11 students will be in exam mode this week and next. The exams provide an excellent opportunity for students not only to test their learning from Semester 1, but also to gain valuable insights about their strengths and challenges under exam conditions.

Year 12 learning programs also continue through to the end of term, aside from the Research Project. This subject, compulsory for the successful completion of SACE, is now completed and the results are being submitted to the SACE Board. We wish the students well and trust that all the learning, application, and hard work come to fruition. The coming term break is a great opportunity for Year 12 students to have a rest from the day to day demands of classes, but it is also a time to consolidate their learning as they prepare for the Trial Exams (Week 1, Term 3), and then move into what essentially will be their last term of school.

This is also the time of the year when students begin the process of selecting subjects and learning pathways for 2020 and beyond. During the next two weeks Year 10 and Year 11 students will have their “Future Pathways” presentation and “Subject Expo” respectively. Parents/Caregivers are an integral and important part of the Subject Selection process and as such will be invited to attend Information Evenings and Subject Counselling sessions in Term 3. Parents/Caregivers and students are strongly encouraged to familiarise themselves with subject offerings as outlined in the 2020 Curriculum Handbooks upon their release. The partnership of school, students, and parents is essential to gaining the best possible outcomes. More information will follow, and we look forward to working with you through the process.

I take this opportunity to wish our Year 6 staff and students all the best for a successful trip to Canberra in Week 10.

CAD/RADLast Wednesday and Thursday the entire Year 10 cohort was engaged in the annual CAD/RAD program.

CAD, or Community Awareness Day, is designed to give our students a practical insight into the works of a number of Charities and Christian social justice organisations such as Hutt St Centre, Centacare Catholic Family Services, Catherine House, Foodbank, Centacare, Lutheran Care, Caritas, and Louise Place.

RAD, or Reflection Activity Day, challenges students to reflect on their relationships, their priorities and the direction of their lives as they enter their senior years of schooling.

These two days are an integral part of the Year 10 program and parents of these students are encouraged to discuss the days with their sons and daughters. We look forward to reading reflections from the students in the Star.

We greatly appreciate all of the organisations who opened their doors to us and to the presenters who were, through their sharing and personal stories, able to provide insights not always available to our students.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus This special feast day celebrates the love of Christ for all Humankind. The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents not simply His physical heart but His love for all people. A number of students from the Primary and Secondary Campuses are representing St Michael’s College at the Catholic Interschool Feast of the Sacred Heart Mass Friday 28 June at the Sacred Heart Catholic Parish Church, Hindmarsh. The Mass coincides with the conclusion of the 105-year connection with the MSC priests.

The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, who have a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, have a long and positive connection with St Michael’s College. We recognise this ongoing relationship and thank the MSC Priests who give so generously of their time to the College and trust they have a very special Feast Day.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

The Extend Superstar is…Liam Casey... for his caring attitude and for including the younger boys in games.

What’s Been Happening? This week we had raisin toast, vetkoek, toasted cheese, banana muffins and popcorn. We also served fresh fruit and vegetables. Our bowl with fruit was also made available with mandarins, apples and pears. In terms of activities we learned how rain clouds work, made sherbet with Mr Pawlak and played a variety of games and sports. Playdough and Lego were popular amongst the younger boys. The boys also showed an ongoing interest in paper planes. We will build on this interest in the vacation when we make paper boats. Our Winter Holiday program bookings have opened! We are looking forward to another fun-filled school holiday program. Visit Extend's website to view our exciting timetable! Enrol and book now: extend.com.au

SA REFUGEE WEEK YOUTH POSTER AWARDS EXHIBITION The poster created by Alexander Goode and James McGorman from Year 6M was selected for the Youth Poster Awards Exhibition. Mr Damian Patton, Deputy Principal - Primary and Alexander Goode (pictured) attended the SA Refugee Week opening of the Exhibition which marks the beginning of Refugee Week. The exhibition and ceremony were held in the Hawke Centre; UniSA, City West Campus. Alexander and James collaborated to create a poster in response to the Quilty Exhibition currently on display at the Art Gallery of SA and the Refugee Crisis, depicting a life jacket with the message "Let us provide safe harbour". ECO SQUADWritten by the Eco Squad

"The Eco Squad had a busy Week 8 with both Year 7 and Year 8 teams working on projects. Year 7s are working on two projects at the moment. The first involved making two videos, one explaining the sustainability problems and the other explaining solutions to the problems. The film crews have been working hard on these and will be presenting them to Mr Foley and the Henley Leadership Team soon.

The second project started on Tuesday. We are making mats for homeless people using reusable plastic bags. These are cut into strips and then crocheted together to make the mat. They are used to help people stay off damp and wet surfaces. We started crocheting the mats on Tuesday. The mats use quite a lot of material and so, if you have any reusable plastic bags such as those used in shoe and fashion shops or Coles, Woolworths or Foodland and you do not want to use them again, we’re happy to put them to good use. Students can drop them in to Ms Pearce. Her office is in the LEC.

Year 8s made good progress on constructing their raised garden beds for our veggie garden. The frames for the garden beds were built by the Year 12 Outdoor Construction class along with Mr Matthew Anderson. We are using a wicking bed structure for the beds. This week we added the drainage pipes and gravel layers. Our next step is to add the geotextile layer and soil. We will be doing this at lunchtime on Friday 28 June."

Ms Catherine Pearce, Head of Department - Humanities

COMMUNITY AWARENESS DAY (CAD) AND REFLECTION ACTIVITY DAY (RAD)On Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 June, the Year 10 Level participated in the annual CAD RAD program. The Community Awareness Day is designed to assist students to understand how charitable organisations assist people in the community. Students visited various organisations and had a presentation by a representative of the organisation to explain their role in the community. Students then shared their insights with each other in the city at the Cathedral Hall. The primary goal of the CAD experience is to encourage students to embrace the principles of social justice in all aspects of their life.

The Reflection Activity Day involved a presentation by Matt Crook from Life Matters regarding setting goals for senior school, reflecting on self-image and being positive about life. The primary goal of the RAD experience is to enhance students’ socio-emotional skills for success and wellbeing as they transition to their senior years of schooling.

DERRICK MCMANUS PRESENTATION"May 5, 1994, Derrick was put in a situation which was truly life changing as the threat of losing his life after being shot 14 times whilst carrying out an arrest was made prominent. When Derrick came in to speak to the year level it was clear that although he`d been in such a traumatic situation, he was able to find humour in light of the events which made all the information much easier to process and discuss. Even when he was an inch from death being wheeled into an ambulance, after fighting for his life throughout three long hours of bleeding out on the floor, he was still cracking jokes. He feels this helped him to survive and shows the importance of humour in challenging situations.

I believe that Derrick McManus is an inspiration to us all. From what he explained in his presentation, after two years of constantly overcoming difficulties, including not being capable of walking or moving on a large scale after the incident, but also fighting his mental demons, battling depression and lack of motivation he was finally cleared to go back to his work in the Star Group where he continued to serve. Derrick McManus bounced back after being shot 14 times, an incident which should have killed him or potentially paralysed him and, continued with his work. He displayed many character strengths throughout this journey, having persisted and showing tremendous amounts of bravery and resilience. There were many lessons taken from his presentation about picking yourself back up regardless of the obstacles you face or the hardships before you, we are very grateful for Derrick coming in to talk to us".

Dan Sampson (9BPC-01) on behalf of Year 9 Students

FRIDAY FEAST DAY Last week saw a group of Year 9 students interested in technology joined for lunch by Luke Harris the president of e-sports from Uni SA.

Lucas Pacicca (9BPC6) reports:

"Luke enlightened us on the exciting world of gaming. He made a career as a e-sport journalist and explained how he persisted to do so. This UniSA student, who will finish his degree this year, has joined an e-sports team and made quite a success out of it. He streams and has travelled the world because of his involvement in the sport. He has met many famous gamers at special gaming events, and works as a journalist at these very important events. Luke told us about how he had made a success out of it. We had many questions and he explained that in his opinion by 2022 e-sports will be the second most popular sport worldwide."

Luke Harris shared the journey of his career path in a very personal way. He highlighted the importance of school and a life balance, and also talked about developing the whole person, goal setting and having positive role models around him.We are grateful for him coming to chat with us and giving his time so generously.

STUDENT SERVICES

JOBS OF THE FUTURELast week the Careers Department attended a Professional Development session at Flinders University. Once again, it revealed the massive changes ahead as we journey through the next Industrial Revolution. See: https://www.industry.gov.au/funding-and-incentives/manufacturing/industry-40

We heard from Professor Tania Leiman about the growth in the non-traditional areas of Law that blew the myth that Law Graduates are not getting work. Yes, whilst the traditional areas of Law may be on the decline, in terms for jobs growth the areas include mediation, regulation, use of AI etc.

The projected increasing rewards for workers with high level critical thinking skills and creativity was impressive.

Interesting reading within the Worlds Bank report: The Changing Nature of Work and The World Economic Forum Report on the Future of Jobs

Of course, the message continues to be, keep up with the highest levels of Mathematics, Science and English and nurture creativity along the way. Even students competing for Apprenticeships are advantaged with Maths and Science subjects though to Year 12, where Year 12 Maths and Physics are a significant advantage for being competitive for an Electrical Apprenticeship.

For Twitter followers it is good to follow mikequidazzi too! https://twitter.com/mikequindazzi

The South Australian workforce is the most vulnerable in terms of changes with Technology so it becomes increasingly important to develop those uniquely human qualities. See: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-06-26/sa-among-worst-hit-by-20m-jobs-lost-globally-to-robots/11245092?section=technology Of course these highly valued human skills are the same qualities that are central to the St Michael’s College Vision Statement and emphasises nurturing curiosity.

INTERESTED IN BEING A VETERINARIANThe University of Adelaide is holding information sessions at the Roseworthy Campus during the July school holidays and these will fill up fast. Given the complexity of the pathway to becoming a Vet, it is VERY important that interested Year 11 and 12 students consider attending one of these sessions. The event provides fantastic opportunities for students and their parents/guardians to learn more about their available study options in animal and veterinary sciences.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

OPEN GIRLS KO FOOTBALL On Friday of Week 7, the Open K/O Girls football team travelled to Sacred Heart College (SHC) with the tough task of playing SHC and Brighton High School in back to back games. The girls started poorly against a highly talented Sacred Heart outfit, letting through four first quarter goals inside the first 10 minutes. After a quarter time rev up, the girls started to play excellent football. It was always going to be a tough ask for the girls to come back and win; however, the initial quarter-time margin ended as the final winning margin for SHC.

The second game saw St Michael’s play a much better brand of football using their run and skill level to their advantage through the middle of the field. St Michael’s finished with the choccies running out four goal winners in the second game. Jordy Freer provided some excellent ruck work and Chloe Forby and Charlotte Dolan were excellent in the midfield all day. Chloe and Madison Schwarz were excellent on the wings, providing some much needed scoreboard pressure throughout the latter part of the day. Other contributors across the ground included Alicia Gaffney, Jess Welch and Alysha Fitzgerald. Well done to all the girls involved in the knockout football this year.

Mr Ned Heath, Health and Physical Education Teacher

The Year 8A’s fought hard on Saturday against a much taller and skilful team. PAC had at least 3 state players and another 3 players that must be close to elite level. We started the game slowly and it looked like the final result was going to be a massive blow out. To our credit we continued to push ourselves and never gave up. I challenged the boys at three quarter time to win the last quarter and they were successful in that quest. Harry Dodd continues to impress me as does Jarrod Jesson. It was great to have our captain back (Isaac Edwards) and Kane Jolly rucked well all day. Jaiven Palmer was hard at the ball and gave us the spark in the last quarter to finish off the game well.

It was a gutsy fightback in the last quarter that lead to our victory on Saturday. Rostrevor were a much larger team and were quite physical at times. We lost our way a little in the third to be about 2 goals down at three quarter time. We scored the first goal in the last quarter quite quickly and soon after Jackson White put us back in the lead. It was great to see the massive celebration from nearly every player after that goal. Rostrevor continued to put our defence under pressure for the remainder of the quarter but to our credit we held firm. Next week we have a massive challenge when we play PAC.

The boys started off flat, played as individuals and struggled to hold position, which left us 1-2 down in the first half.

At half time we discussed the need to control the possession, keep structure and play good football. The second half started and we conceded early, the boys however did listen and started using their football intelligence over skills to play tempo, hold structure and combine with each other which opened up the pitch, created scoring opportunities and a win. Best players Fabbian, Jordan and Isaac who played consistent intelligent football throughout the game. Goal Scorers: Fabbian, Luis, Isaac(2), Brandon

SMC 37 v PAC 54; Best; L Muller, S Menta, J De Bono;

Another tough loss for the A grade, coming up against yet another strong side. Significantly undersized compared to PAC, the A team lacked defensive rebounds as well as offensive execution. Good effort from the boys in the first three quarters, however dropped from their usual standard in the fourth.

Middle B1

SMC 50 v PAC 32; Best: W Hennessey, A Szolnoki-Hurditch, A Bet;

Great win from the B team, solid performance as usual. Excellent to see the winning streak continue. Great performance by all players!

Good effort by the St Michaels players. The game was close throughout all four quarters, only falling short by a mere 5 points in the later stages of the game.

PAID FEEDBACK ON ECZEMA (ATOPIC DERMATITIS)If you care for a child with eczema, you (or your child) could be paid $100.00 for your comments and suggestions to improve a new document written for patients. Medical experts need feedback from a patient's point of view - so future patients will find this document clear, easy to read, appropriate and relevant.

Parents and carers of teenagers and children (2-18 years of age) who have eczema (atopic dermatitis) are asked to give their opinions in a short, face to face review of this draft version. Your comments will assist in improving the wording and possiby the layout before this new document is approved for general use.

The project: Questions, including rating scales, used by medical staff to monitor patient progress. Participants read and answer the questions while chatting with me about how easy (or tricky) they are to understand and answer.
