In August, we will again movethe breakfast back to the secondSaturday, and possibly haveanother fun run after breakfast. There is also the Show andShine at the Sonic down inLincoln, closely followed by anew event, a car show at theSummerfest at Lutheran Churchof the Master. This will be thefirst year the Great PlainsRegion participates in this event,so I am hoping we have a goodturn out.

The Great Plains Region wasrepresented by Kurt Halvorsonand Joe Chambers at thePorsche Parade Traverse in CityMichigan. I am looking forwardto reading Kurt’saccount of theweek’s activitieselsewhere in thisissue. Next yearthe Parade will bein MontereyCalifornia. I havebeen there acouple of times, butreally didn’t takethe time to enjoy allthe sights. It wouldbe fun to take a

Next weekend is the GreatPlains Summer Interlude atMAM. Registration has laggeda little because of the hotweather, but hopefully that willpick up as we approach theactual date and the weathermoderates just a little to makethe day more comfortable. Forthose of you who missed theclub picnic, you should put iton your calendar for next year.

The July club breakfast wasmoved back a week becauseof the picnic, however therewas a good turn out and wedid a short fun run after theevent that Brian Tessman ledon a route developed byDenny Strauss. It was aspirited drive over some of theback roads of western Douglascounty. George Poullosstopped to take a picture of aState Historical Marker justnorth of Maple, commemorating the first planeflight in Nebraska, andpromptly lost the group eventhough we waited for him justup the road. George finallymade it back to Elkhorn aftergoing almost all the way toBlair trying to find us.

Great Plains tour to the westcoast.

A venue for the annual meetinghas been set. It will be held atManarin Investments’ newfacility at 505 North 210th Street. The date - hopefully inSeptember - will be confirmedvery soon. The agenda is still awork in progress, but I do thinkwe will have something tointerest everyone besides thesparkling new facility. Just soyou’ll read the column nextmonth, you are going to have towait a while to find out what thesurprise is, but it will be worththe wait. Tom

2013 PCA Porsche Parade Kurt Halvorson

Traverse City Porsche Paradeby Kurt Halvorson

The planning for this year’s 58thAnnual Porsche Parade began thefirst part of March: Joe Chambers,Kim Burger and I were planning toregister, but a conflict for Kim theweek of Parade knocked him out ofattending. Joe and I registered earlyand assured ourselves of rooms atthe host hotel and our desiredactivities. For those of you who havenot attended a Parade, theregistration form is almost as long asthe options list for purchasing a newPorsche. (In contrast, theregistration form for BMW’s annualOktoberfest is one page andaccomplishes the same thing.) I’mstill trying to figure out why PCA’sregistration form is unnecessarilycomplicated, but I digress.

Well, the big day arrived - June22nd - departure day. Joe plottedour route, taking us east on I-80 andthen north through Cedar Rapids,Iowa, into Wisconsin and overtowards Green Bay. So far, noPorsche sightings. After dinner inGreen Bay, we drove over toLambeau Field. Neither of us hadbeen there before, so we weresurprised to find it in the middle of anolder, well maintained middle classneighborhood. Two events weregoing on inside that evening, so wewere able to get into the stadiumconcourse and walk around. It wouldhave been fun to have a tour, but thenext available one was on Sundayand we had 7 hours of driving aheadof us. That will have to wait for

another day.Sunday dawned foggy and

overcast. The 7 hour drive northaround Lake Michigan through theUpper Peninsula and down acrossthe Mackinac bridge into TraverseCity looked like it was going to be awash out. The whole drive up thewest shore of the Lake was shroudedin fog and showers. The furthest wecould see out into the Lake at anyone point was 50 yards. It was verydisappointing. Once we stopped forlunch and made our way across thebridge however, things started toimprove. As we got closer toTraverse City, the sun came out andit turned out to be a beautiful start toa week of great weather for Parade. We had our first Porsche sightingabout 30 minutes out from TraverseCity - surprised it took that long.

We arrived at the GrandTraverse Resort around 4pm,where we checked in to thehotel and checked in for ourParade activities for the week.We received a nice goodiebag from PCA and made therounds checking out thevendors’ displays in thehospitality room. We madeour way over to the car washarea to get the cars cleanedup before dinner. Meeting

people and making new friends is agreat part of Parade, and the carwash area is a great place to meetup with others, swap stories andlearn about each other’s cars, hometowns, etc. Sponsors providedbuckets, towels and car shampoo toassist in the process.

This year there were over 800cars in attendance, with over 1200attendees. The parking lot was ahistory lesson in all things Porsche. The “regular” guests of the hotelwere few, but they were obviouslycurious about why they weresuddenly overcome by all theseGerman sports cars (and some SUVsand sedans, of course). Throughoutthe week there was continual activity

in the parking lot, with people walkingthe rows of cars after dinner, lookingfor their favorites, a rare model, interesting license plates or paintcolors, or simply the cleanest ordirtiest in attendance.

Monday dawned sunny andwarm. With every reservation spotfilled, we honored our commitmentfor the Michelin Drive and Compare. They set up an autocross course atthe nearby casino parking lot andhad two 991 cabriolets awaiting anassault by most of the Paradeattendees over the next 2 days. Weonly got to drive 2 laps each,“testing” the new Michelin Pilot SuperSport tires. Considering we wereonly driving for a total of about 2minutes, it was a little hard to gainperspective on the desirability of thetires. However, they performed welland the new 991 is an incrediblemachine. Having driven one on 3different occasions, I can maybe seea pre-owned one in my distant future.

Upon returning to the resort, weheaded to Concours. With a greatdisplay of cars, most every modelwas represented including 356s,early long hood 911s,Carreras, 964s,993s, 996s, 997s, 914s, 924s, 928s,944s, 968s, Boxsters, Caymans,Cayennes and Panameras.Noticeably absent were 912s and911SCs. Considering the number ofthese cars that were built, theabsence of these models wassurprising. We had lunch with one ofthe Concours’ participants – anowner of a black 356 Speedster,“willed” to him by his father. Hecompleted a 3 year restoration of itthrough Stoddard’s and drove the carto the event from Ohio. It was aclass winner. We also met Saschafrom Beverly Hills Porsche, known bythe staff at Woodhouse as well. Forlack of a more technical jobdescription, suffice it to say Saschahandles custom orders or “specialwishes” for customers. He is fromGermany and has been working withPorsche NA in his California location

for the last few years. It was greatto make his acquaintance. He andhis wife’s toddler son was a buddingPorschephile.

The Historics were on displayadjacent to Concours. 911 #1 wason display, on loan from JerrySeinfeld’s collection, replete with a1964 New York World’s Fair historiclicense plate. Interesting to Joe andme was that the car had no securityaround it, no ropes, no bullet proofglass - just out in the open for all

participants to respect and enjoy. There were other interesting

examples with provenance from theMonte Carlo rally championships ofthe 1960’s and one of the winningBrumos entries from the 1970’s.

Monday evening we enjoyed thePresident’s reception at a facility onthe marina. We sat with membersfrom Wisconsin, South Carolina andFlorida regions. Our thanks tochapter president Tom Cooper forproviding us his passes. We regretTom was not able to attend.

Tuesday we participated in theTSD (Time, Speed, Distance) Rally. It was our first “official” rally as driverand navigator. We actually tried oneabout 8 years ago with the BMWclub, but that was more of afun/gimmick rally. We would soondetermine that event provided us

absolutely no experience in the“tricks” of navigating a PCA TSD.Our time out was 9:45am, and after30 minutes on the road we were righton time and on course. However, after we left the first checkpoint ontime, we were quickly seeing otherPorsches at different intersections wepassed through, wondering if we orthey were lost. It was both. Uponarriving at instruction #36, we met animpasse. “CAST 45 MPH (meaning, change average speed to 45 mph),Left at T intersection, or right atStop.” After 30 minutes of looking fora T intersection or stop sign wherewe could go right, we gave up,deemed ourselves unfit for rallying, headed back to downtown TraverseCity, had lunch, ate pie and walkedaround the local retailestablishments, sampling chocolatecovered cherries along the way. TheNational Cherry Festival was comingup two weeks after Parade. Therewere cherries everywhere. The twohours we spent downtown proved farmore productive than burning morefossil fuel embarrassing ourselves inthe travails of a TSD. Upon turningin our score sheet and later seeingthe results, we only finished 45thfrom last (out of 150 participants).Perhaps the smart ones neverstarted. Tuesday afternoon includeda Zone 10 reception at the resort, with members from Kansas toMinnesota in attendance.

Wednesday we enjoyed awonderful driving tour on the famed“M 22” – the Michigan highway thatloops Lake Michigan. We drovesouthwest from Traverse City toSleeping Bear Dunes, some 24 milesof huge sand dunes on the east sideof the Lake, unique topography to

this area that exists nowhere else inthe world. At the state park entrancewe stopped for socializing, picturesand a break. A park ranger informedour group that a walk over the dunesto the shore of the Lake would take 3½ hours(!) due to the size of thedunes and the difficulty in walking thesandy terrain to the Lake shore. Wepassed on that “opportunity” andproceeded to drive with the caravanto lunch at Arcadia Bluffs. We dinedat the Country Club on the Lake, enjoying the company of our fellowPCA friends with a wonderful waitstaff, white linen table cloths andexcellent food (and dessert!). Thedrive back to Traverse City was atour leisure, and a car wash was inorder upon late afternoon arrival backat the resort, aka an opportunity to make more new friends.

Thursday morning dawned earlyand with our check-out completed,we headed for home via the “fastroute”: south through Cadillac andGrand Rapids, onto I-90 and I-80 andhome. Joe tells me we traveled over2000 miles for what we bothconsidered a great experience, despite leaving early with activitiescontinuing Thursday, Friday, and thetraditional driving Parade throughtown schedule for Saturday. It wasmy second Parade and Joe’s first, but we both know it won’t be our last.

Next year’s is scheduled forMonterey, California, 2015’s is inIndiana, but 2015’s Fall Escape isplanned for the Black Hills! Plan toattend one of these future events andrepresent our region and chapter –you won’t be disappointed.

...Ask The Experts - by Doug Schlott

Hi Doug,I enjoyed your article in this month’s newsletter. I have a ’10 GT3 that I used Mobil 1 0/40 Euro formula. At a Porscheparade in Keystone, Colorado a few years ago, a Mobil tech said that oil had the highest zinc content. I worry about thegov’t regs requiring the lower levels of zinc and you would know what other changes being forced on us. What would yourecommend I use? I also have a low mileage ’86 911.

Bob Knapp

Bob - when I had the 2011 RS 4.0, I used our Mag 1 5w40 with fantastic results (as Warren used the car for oil testing as well). TheMobil 1 has 900PPM (from their tech line) of zinc. Our Mag 1 has 1020 PPM of zinc. Your Owners Manual should state that you mayuse either 0w40 or 5w40 and we chose 5w40 for better boundary/startup protection. On the 86 911 we have a 1300 ppm zinc 20w50 that you can use.

Hi Doug - Thanks for the informative article in the May issue of Der Skooner. What oil would you recommend for a 97 Boxster, withabout 29,000 miles to minimize the possibility of the dreaded IMS bearing failure? I have read many opinions on this. The consensus seems to be a synthetic 5-W40 with a high zinc content. Any thoughts? Does Warren Distribution makean oil that you would recommend for my Boxster?>> >> Thank You,>> Rod Feelhaver

Rod - our 5w40 has 1020ppm of zinc; however using high zinc oils will not prevent the failure. From what I have read a spirited drivenow and then is the best way along with good motor oil. There is a product on the market to monitor the IMS bearing called IMSguardian (we are not affiliated with) http://www.imsretrofit.com/ims-guardian/. I have read people have had good success with theproduct as well as using a quality oil and driving the car in the upper RPM's once in a while.>> The Mag 1 5w40 euro would work perfect for your Boxter.

Hey Doug -I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the article in Der Skooner on oils. It was very informative and easy to read. Please continue this article with more info in the next issue. I think there are a lot of people who are interested in thistopic. Maybe a discussion on what situations to use a different weight of oil or what the additives do, or is there adifference between oils (conventional v synthetic, or brands.)John

John - the trick is to find the right viscosity for your particular engine, which is why we suggest following the manufacturer'srecommendation. When manufacturers build their cars they design the engine with specific viscosities of oil. They do this for both fueleconomy and durability. For fuel economy they want to run the lightest grade of oil possible for durability. For durability they want aheavy grade but not so heavy that it affects the valve train components. Adding anything to your oil can change its viscosity. Some types of after-market oil additives will increase the viscosity at operatingtemperature. This may increase oil pressure and might improve bearing wear; it can often cause poorer upper-end wear. I don'trecommend any type of after-market additives. This can not only change the viscosity, but it can change the TBN and chemistry of theoil making it brake down quicker. If you decide to use different viscosity oil than what the manufacturer recommends, you might want to use oil analysis while you areexperimenting; wear data doesn't lie. A good site for information is http://www.pqiamerica.com/ PQIA is an independent resource for information and insights on the quality oflubricants in the marketplace.

Words to Drive By

“Anticipate or perish.” I used thesewords with my daughters when theywere learning to drive.

It worked. My daughters survived theirteen years behind the wheel, intact.Although I can’t quite say the samething about the Civic they used, occasionally as a bumper car.

There was the incident where the olderone, parking her car in front of thegarage, said her foot accidentallyslipped off the brake and onto theaccelerator... the car then slammed intothe garage door.

She called me in the office, and I hadthe presence of mind to ask if she wasall right. I’m very proud of that.

Then I called my wife, and asked howthe garage door was... and she saidthere was no garage door.

But the girls remember those words, tothis day. Which is the point. And whichgot me thinking about sayings fordriving. And, you know what? I couldn’tactually think of many adages, at all.

Oh, there’s the Stirling Moss commentabout straightaways... the boring bitsbetween the corners. And there’s the911 mantra, “Slow in fast out.” Andthere’s the line attributed to A.J. Foytabout driving at Indy, “If you’re notscaring yourself three times a lap, you’re going too slow.”

And, of course, “Speed is a matter ofmoney... how fast do you want to go?”

I got an e-mail from the online magazineWinding Road, offering slogan teeshirts, and all they had were “Keep calmand carry speed” and “It’s surprisinghow many people, including Formula 1drivers, think the brakes are for slowingthe car down, “ which is attributed toMario Andretti.

Not exactly inspiring, are they?

Which is very ironic, because if you’re arunner you get inundated with allmanner of profundities. One magazine,Runner’s World, actually sends you a“Daily Kick in the Butt” by e-mail.

And it’s even more ironic, because

many of the lines I see relate to a lotmore than running... like competing ingeneral... and like life.

Take “A man can fall many times, but heisn’t a failure until he begins to blamesomebody else,” attributed to StevePrefontaine. And another one from Pre,“To give anything less than your best isto sacrifice the gift.”

And here’s my favorite from Steve, “A lotof people run a race to see who’s thefastest. I run to see who has the mostguts....”

In point of fact, the running world picksup the quotes from all sorts of places, and makes them their own.

Take “Success is a peace of mind, whichis a direct result of self-satisfaction inknowing you did your best to become thebest that you are capable of becoming” --John Wooden.

Or “Twenty years from now you will bemore disappointed by things you didn’tdo than by the ones you did. So throwoff the bowlines, sail away from the safeharbor, and catch the trade winds in yoursails. Explore. Dream. Discover” --Mark Twain.

Or “We must all suffer from one of twopains; the pain of discipline or the pain ofregret. The difference is that disciplineweighs ounces and lasts a moment whileregret weighs tons and lasts a lifetime” --Jim Rohn

Now, understand, I don’t see any of thisanywhere in the automotive world... ormotorsport world for that matter. I don’tknow why. Because when it’s a hot andsteamy day, and you’re wearing a multi-layer Nomex driving suit and full-facehelmet, and you’re fastened hard into theroll-cage of your car, and you’repounding around a bullring for an hourand a half, and your pulse is soaring, and you’re manic to get to the checkeredflag, first, l don’t care how good your coolsuit and your drinking tube are.... it’s thesame challenge.

Here’s how Patton described it, “Now ifyou are going to win any battle you haveto do one thing. You have to make themind run the body. Never let the bodytell the mind what to do. The body willalways give up. It is always tiredmorning, noon, and night. But the body

is never tired if the mind is not tired....You’ve always got to make the mind takeover and keep going.”

Ahh, that little voice. When I ran my firsthalf marathon, I got to mile 8 or 9 andstarted having a conversation with thatvoice. It was telling me to stop. And Ianswered with “what would I say topeople?” And the voice kept coming upwith scenarios, so to speak, like “Itripped” or “it was too hot.” And myconscious kept rejecting them, saying,“no that won’t work, nobody will believeme.” This went on and on, and on... untilI reached mile 12 and realized the endwas in sight.

Here’s what you’re up against, “It’s veryhard to understand in the beginning thatthe whole idea is not to beat the otherrunners. Eventually you learn that thecompetition is against the little voiceinside you that wants to quit” -- Dr.George Sheehan.

So what’s the problem, drivers?

Try this one on, “Keep the dream in frontof you. Never let it go, regardless of howfarfetched it might seem” -- Hal Higdon.

Or the gray haired mantra, “Once you’reover the hill, you pick up speed.”

Will they work for you?

Only time, your time, will tell.

Some additional thoughts on zinc, phosphorous, Porsche’s and MAG 1 with FMX

MAG 1 FMX High Phos retention ZDP oils not only start out with high levels of Zinc and Phosphorous, they maintain this superiorwear protection chemistry in the oil throughout the drain interval. The fact that MAG 1 retains high amounts of ZDP as well asmaintaining shear stability throughout the life of the oil makes our products excellent for both the most modern and sophisticatedengines on the planet as well as users of classic, flat-tappet camshaft vehicles that tend to experience significant camshaft wear usingnormal oils. MAG 1. Friction Modified for eXtended wear protection.

MAG 1 oils are treated with the maximum amount of proprietary FMX wear reduction chemistry allowed, to afford maximum wearprotection and shear stability to our users throughout the life of the oil drain and deliver the premium product they want and expect.

MAG 1’s wear test results are proven and documented; the industry standard Sequence IV-A camshaft wear test has an upper limit of90 um of wear on the camshaft to be to pass the test. MAG 1 with FMX scored an impressive 16 on this test where we only neededto score less than 90. This is 82% less wear than the test limit, and 82% more wear protection than we needed to put in the bottle topass the test. We at MAG 1 are not satisfied with simply passing the test- we really strived to raise the bar. This proves our MAG 1products are truly premium products- without the premium price.

From the premium look of the conventional oils and chemicals to the crystal clear environmentally friendly PET bottle used in the FMXfull synthetic products, we wanted to visually communicate to the customer that this is a truly premium product. MAG 1 FMX. Thedifference is clear.

I need to correct a significant oversight that occurred last month. During thediscussion about our well respected and successful Club Race I forgot to mentiona very important member of the team - Ken Kusak - for his splitter duties. It’s got tobe done correctly or there is complete chaos. There were zero problems - Ken didgreat! Thanks, Ken!

Its clear Tom and Kurt enjoyed their journey to Parade. We’re blessed that Kurttook the time to share the experience. Almost as good as being there. So there arezero oversights this month,,,,EVERY Parade photo in this issue was taken by Kurt.Kurt’s not going to like this....not his style. But it sure would be nice to says “thanksfor sharing” next time you see him.

Tom was absolutely correct - I did get lost towards the end of last weeks SaturdayStrauss Scenic Sightseeing Spree led by Brian Tessman. Last year a SSSSS(Sunday instead of Saturday so it still works) took us by the monument to the right.Because of my aviation background anything airplane related is of interest. I wasglad we found it again. This monument identifies where the first successful airplane(aeroplane) flight took place in Nebraska in 1910 - a mere seven years after theWright Brothers took to the air at Kitty Hawk. Note that one flight traveled 800 feet- that’s 55 911’s end-to-end!

Porsche Owners and Lessees Settle Class Action Regarding IMS Engine FailureJuly 17, 2013 - Porsche Cars North America agrees to reimburse current and prior 2001 through 2005 Porsche 911 and Boxterowners and lessees for out-of-pocket money spent on IMS engine failure repairs. The law firm of Knapp Petersen & Clarkeannounces that a settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of certain Porsche owners and lessees whohave faced or will face expensive Porsche engine failure repairs because of a defective component part, known as the IMS.

The settlement reached in Eisen v. Porsche Cars North America., Inc. will reimburse present and former owners and lessees ofPorsche Boxster and 911 cars, model years 2001 through 2005, for money they spent to repair their vehicle due to a failure of theIntermediate Shaft (IMS), an engine component whose failure can lead to catastrophic engine failure and thousands of dollars inrepair bills.

Porsche owners and lessees may be reimbursed up to 100% of their out-of-pocket costs, depending upon the mileage on thevehicle at the time of repair. The reimbursement includes all out-of-pocket engine damage and replacement costs, up to ten yearsfrom the vehicle first being placed in service, regardless of whether such damage or loss occurs before or after the notice of thissettlement. The Porsche owners and lessees are also entitled up to $200.00 in expenses for mileage and towing.

Class Counsel Stephen M. Harris, of Knapp, Petersen & Clarke is pleased to have achieved a settlement that allows classmembers to recover their out-of-pocket losses as soon as possible, rather than having to wait through years of litigation and facethe potential risks present in any trial. "This settlement represents a wonderful result on behalf of current and former Porscheowners and lessees who had to pay out-of-pocket costs related to repairing or replacing an engine which sustained damage as aresult of a defective IMS," Stephen Harris said.

A website has been established for class members and members of the public to find out more information about the settlement. Please visit www.IMSPorscheSettlement.com to determine whether you are covered by the settlement, obtain a claim form, communicate with Class Counsel, or to learn more about the class action and its resolution.
