sheets, newspaper clippings, financial statements, event programs/flyers, and film

press reviews relating to the activities of the Cultural Arts Department.

HISTORY:

A significant branch within the Jewish Community Center of Kansas City, the

Department of Cultural Arts has developed diverse programs addressing Jewish

identity, history, and cultural continuity through recognizing the contributions of

Jewish artists to art and theatre. Along with sponsoring a recurring Jewish Arts

Festival featuring the work of leading Jewish artists (traditional and modern) in

Israel and throughout the United States, the Department’s activities include

seasonal performances (Center Season) of diverse Jewish entertainers (comedians,

actors, classical musicians, folk and rock musicians) engaged in eclectic media

(plays, musicals, one-person shows, classical concerts), as well as a Jewish Film

Festival held on a consistent annual basis since 1999.

PROVENANCE:

This gift was received from Beatrice Fine as accession KA1512 on March 29,

2007. Accession KA2044 was received from Krista Blockwood on April 18,

2012.

COPYRIGHT AND RESTRICTIONS:

The Donor has given and assigned to the State Historical Society of Missouri

all rights of copyright which the Donor has in the Materials and in such of the

Donor’s works as may be found among any collections of Materials received by

DESCRIPTION:

Containing correspondence, committee minutes, artist portfolios, performers’

information sheets, newspaper clippings, financial statements, event

programs/flyers, and film press reviews, this collection is subdivided into

categories representing the Department of Cultural Arts primary activities: Jewish

Art Festivals, Gallery Theater productions, Tzedakah Arts, the Jerry Penzner

Young Artists Showcase, and the Jewish Film Festivals. (The one notable

exception to the collection’s general organization via programs is the separate

category allocated to a January 24, 1998 concert by celebrated Broadway

performer Mandy Patinkin, an event which received disproportional preparation

and local press coverage owing to the high publicity of its star.)

Despite containing letters from the 1980s and newspaper clippings dating as

far back as to the Israeli Chief Rabbi’s historic meeting with President Truman in

1964, owing to the collection’s primary concentration on the years 1994-2007, its

chronological scope is consequently assigned to these thirteen years.

Additional materials concern the history of the Resident Theatre, and a

portfolio of limited edition lithographs entitled The Shtetl by William Gropper.
