Keeping students in school until they complete their education has become a national priority, but it’s clear there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Individual students face very personal challenges as they negotiate the system. In a seven-hour broadcast on Saturday, September 27, the third annual American Graduate Day will highlight the people and organizations working to inspire students to commit to completing their education. Bestselling author and U.S. Army veteran Wes Moore hosts the broadcast. Additional hosts include Lauren Wanko (NJTV News), Juju Chang (ABC News), Bianna Golodryga (Yahoo!), Hari Sreenivasan (PBS NewsHour Weekend) and Sesame Street’s Elmo. A notable component of American Graduate Day will be Stories of Champions segments profiling people across America who are working to help students graduate. WNET awarded grants to 47 PBS stations, including WLIW and NJTV, making it possible for them to profile over 150 American Graduate Champions on-air, on station websites, and via social media. NJTV will highlight Robert O’Donnell, a science teacher at Christa McAuliffe School PS28, as a “Champion,” due to his exceptional work in his Jersey City school district and his role as an active participant in helping his students earn high school diplomas. Marty Johnson will also be featured, representing Isles Inc., a community development and environmental organization in Trenton. As Founder and CEO, Johnson leads the organization in its mission to foster self-reliant families and healthy, sustainable communities. “This year, public media is not only recognizing programs with significant impact, but are recognizing the people who are doing the work that is keeping our children on the pathway to high school graduation and beyond,” says Carole Wacey, Vice President of Education at WNET.
