It’s no wonder neighbourhoods have suchcharacter in a city with a population aslarge as Joburg’s. The City's population is1.5x more than it was 7 years ago, in 2011.

The absolute population is increasing butfewer people are living together. Thismeans the City is under pressure toprovide more and more householdinfrastructure.

Joburg's most densely populated region isaround Soweto.

Did you know:An amazing 40 percent of the entire world's human ancestor fossils havebeen found in areas adjoining Johannesburg.

Joburg as Part of a Larger Village – the Gauteng City Region

Johannesburg is a vital part of the Gauteng City Region (GCR). The GCR is an

interconnected conurbation linked to a world network of major cities.

City regions are made up of areas that have more functional linkages with each

other than with outside areas - like a village.

Johannesburg is ranked as Africa’s only alpha world city. Her global peers include Sydney, Sao Paulo, Milan, Chicago, Moscow, Toronto, Seoul,

Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur & Amsterdam.

In 2011, 13.4 million people lived in the GCR within 100km of central Joburg.

37% of people who migrate to Gauteng live in Joburg, the single highest recipient area.
