The Steeple July / August 2021
Dear Church Family, Greetings! I am so grateful that this summer looks profoundly different than it did last year in 2020. During this summertime, many people are taking advantage of the newfound mobility. It is wonderful for some of us to be able to reunite with family and friends and return to old haunts. I hear many of our church family taking vacations or planning to take one. Someone noted that there are two styles of people when it comes to taking vacations: Mary Vacations and Martha Vaca-tions. Like Martha, some people love to take vacations in which they try to do as many activities as they can (like a friend of mine who saw five different states in five days). Other peo-ple are of the “Mary Vacation” type. They want to “get away from it all.” For them, a great vacation is lying upon a beach somewhere or sitting in a cool cabin and doing absolutely noth-ing. They simply enjoy serenity, contemplation, and quiet re-laxation. One type of vacation is no better than another. They are just very different. One vacation puts a premium upon ad-venture and excitement while the other upon rest and tran-quility. Either can be a great way to renewal. How about the renewal of our soul? In Matthew 11:28, Jesus reminds us that he is the source of rest and renewal. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). As you travel and take a vacation, I strongly encourage you to worship in other churches or join
our online worship. The Scripture reminds us that our task of faith formation is not even just a weekly task, but a daily task. We encourage families and parents to be involved with their children and grandchildren in faith formation during the sum-mer. We would like to remind you that:
Parents play the primary role in passing on the faith to their children. Pray constantly and model your prayer life for your children and grandchildren.
When parents and children talk with one another about faith and become involved in experiences out of faith be-liefs both children and adults are strengthened and grow in faith.
Attending other churches when you travel can provide you with an opportunity to see your faith and our church from a fresh perspective.
May each of you be renewed in Christ!
Have a blessed summer!
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Stephen Yun, Pastor

We are delighted to announce that Jennifer Antoncich is serving as our new Di-
rector of Youth and Family Life as of July, 2021. After some interviews and
prayerful discernment, the SPRC determined Jen would be an ideal fit for the
position (Great thanks to the SPRC chair and members for the excellent work
and result!).
As many of you already know, Jen is a lifelong Methodist and has been a mem-
ber of SUMC for over 10 years. She is a Certified Lay Servant with the GNJUMC
and has played many ministry roles here at SUMC, including the VBS Director,
Small Group Coordinator, and Lay Leader. She has a background in youth minis-
try having previously been the Education Committee Chair, a Sunday School
Teacher and a Confirmation Teacher. She has a big heart for children and youth
and a passion to see them grow in faith and relationship with Jesus.
Jennifer attended Fairleigh Dickinson University where she earned her Bachelors
in English and Masters in the Arts of Teaching. Jennifer is a teacher in Christian
Education and teaches 6th Grade at American Christian School. Jennifer and her
husband Rudy are parents to two sons: Jayden and Jayce. As a family they are
devoted to sharing the love of Jesus with others through prayer, testimony, and missions.
Jennifer will work alongside the youth leaders and volunteers at SUMC to plan and implement youth events for B.A.S.I.C.
(our 5th-8th grade program) and UMYF (our high school program.) She will also coordinate a Confirmation class, as well as
family events throughout the year. Among her first tasks will be to assure a good and smooth transition from Donna Ander-
le's leadership to her own. We ask you to pray for Jennifer as she begins her ministry to our youth and the families.
You can reach Jennifer at [email protected] with any questions or to schedule a meeting.
Here is a note from Jennifer:
EDUCATION
NEW SUMC DIRECTOR OF YOUTH AND FAMILY LIFE
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear Church Family,
I am so grateful and excited to be serving as Succasunna UMC’s Director of Youth and Family Life. I am eager to begin this
ministry with the youth and families at our church. Part of my role as Director of Youth and Family Life is to equip our youth
with practical, authentic, and passionate teachings that will be relevant to them in their daily relationship with God. I pray
that I can play a role in training and equipping our youth to love God with reckless abandon.
I am currently working to create a great platform for our youth for this upcoming Fall. I look forward to sharing with you all
my love and passion for youth ministry. Whether I know you and your family well, or if we have never formally met, or even
have fallen out of touch over the last year please know that I pray for your families and your children.
Have a blessed and safe summer!
Jen

In this small group bible

some of the critical ques-
tions God asks us while
focusing on the quest rather than a resolu-

listen to the questions God has for each of us
during this time. All are welcome. You can
join any of the three sessions.

huge demand with young families!! Blessings to all of you that donated!
We will be collecting grocery bags again for CUMAC. We would appreciate it if they
are clean and possibly ‘double bagged’ when donating. Bags from Shop Rite, Weis
and Wegman’s are all great for donating! You can place your donations at the plastic
tub at the back door of the church please. Thanks in advance for everyone’s sup-
port!

MEN’S STUDY—Saturdays, 7:00 am to 9:00 am via Zoom The Men’s Study Group meets early Saturday morning via Zoom meetings, where they study a variety of relevant Christian topics. In past years we have taken a break for the summer as many have other things to do on Saturday this time of year. This year we are doing something a little different. We will reserve this time for fellowship as those in the group are interested, there will be no DVD. If you would like to spend some time with us, go ahead and connect as usual. I expect to be available each Saturday by 7:30. If there are no participants shortly after 7:30 the session will be closed. If I don’t see you, have a great summer. Please contact Lee Pitea at [email protected] with any questions or if interested in attending. HOSPITALITY MINISTRY Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” - Hebrews 13:2
As we continue with outdoor service through the end of August, our Greeters welcome all who attend our worship services. We do take attendance so that we would be able to contact congregants in the event that we should become aware of a positive Covid situation. We have also resumed the distribution of paper bulletins to those attending service.
The message we would like to send to all who join us at worship service is:
There is a place for you here.

EVENTS AND INFORMATION
FUNNEL CAKES & FRIED OREOS ANYONE?
Mark your calendars! The St. Therese’s Carnival is July 28, 29, 30, and 31. Succasunna UMC operates the funnel cake concession booth at this event and this is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Not only is this a great fundraiser, but it also provides a great opportunity for some in-person fellowship while participating in a community event. We will be circulating sign-up opportunities as the carnival approaches but do mark your calendars now. Please be assured that we are sensitive to proper hygiene and will be doing our best to keep the Funnel Cake sale as clean and safe as possi-ble. We are currently looking for donations of containers for transporting batter. Arizona Iced Tea or similar heavier con-tainers are ideal and gallon milk jugs are fine too. Please drop off in the tub by the back door of the church. Contact Roger Hendrickson 973-204-5707 or Marge Peletier 201-230-7719 if interested in volunteering!

Olde Suckasunny Day—Saturday, September 18, 2021
IT’S BACK! MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE GREAT RETURN OF SUCKSUNNY DAY!
After a year without Suckasunny Day due to the COVID 19 state re-strictions, we are excited to have this great annual Main Street Fair return on Saturday, September 18th. While we are planning many of our normal activities including Children’s games, Funnel Cake, and the Snack Bar, we are looking for ideas for new activities to celebrate the return of this great event! We are also looking for anyone that is interested in supporting selling their crafts at a booth – or anyone that might know someone that wants a booth to sell their products and services. What is really important is that we have the strong support of our Church family and friends to volunteer to make this event truly great! Suckasunny Day is the largest fundraiser for our church, but it is also one of the best opportunities to have everyone together again for a wonderful day of fellowship together. If you are interested in knowing more or have any new ideas to share for Suckasunny Day, please contact either Roger Hendrickson or Linda Diffley. We are both interested in hearing your ideas and getting your support on making Suckasunny Day a memorable and successful event! A link to the booth application is included in our weekly Friday emails.

Dear Pastor Stephen and my church family,
To be truly blessed by my friends at SUMC with their thoughtfulness
and concern over the passing of Joe gives me great happiness to a

said and with hope that a better outcome would happen. But I know all
is in God’s time and he called Joe home and gave him peace.
Always, Sandy Sestak

FINANCE Update
As we pass the mid-point of 2021 (yes, where has
the time gone?!?) it is a good time to evaluate how
the year is evolving financially for SUMC. We have
been blessed!
Blessed with generosity as your weekly and monthly
gifts remain strong!
Blessed as we've received a few unexpected signifi-
cant matching gifts!
Blessed as our thrift shop is open and thriving with
sales this year so far of more than $4,000.
Thank you all for giving so generously of your time,
talents, and funds for God's ministry. As Paul wrote
to the early church in 2 Corinthians 9: 12: 12 Your
gifts meet the needs of the Lord’s people. And that’s
not all. Your gifts also cause many people to thank
God. (NIRV)
Thank you!
