STINGDeMaurice Smith Wins TopAlumnus Award

by Tim Cary for NFLPlayers.com

When DeMaurice F. Smith graduated from CedarvilleUniversity (then Cedarville College) in 1985, he had noidea what the rest of his life would look like.

Twenty-five years later, as the NFL Players Association!sExecutive Director, Smith has no idea what the immediate futureholds for his organization.

But in both situations, Smith sees an important parallel: livingby faith.

“The beautiful thing about faith [is] you take that step withoutknowing where it!s going to end,” Smith told a crowd of more than3,000 here as he accepted the university!s 2010 Alumnus of theYear award.

“I look at the people that I went to school with … friends of minewho continue to be close friends today,” Smith said as headdressed the Cedarville student body. “All of us growing up andmoving through and sitting right where you are now, not knowingwhat God had in store for us, but each of us taking steps becausewe believed …

“It is the courage and the faith to take that step that will leadyou through.”

Now that Smith finds himself heading up one of the most influ-ential groups in American sports during a crucial labor negotia-tion, his faith is more important than ever.

“I!ve got a job where I!ve taken a pretty interesting step andfrankly, I don!t know how it!s going to end,” Smith said. “But I doknow a couple of things. Upon this rock I stand. On faith, we willmake our steps to move forward because that!s how I was taughtand trained to be a leader by guys like Coach Elvin King …

“And I know that regardless of what we do, our organization willend up stronger, more vibrant and more dedicated to the peopleit is to serve, because I understand vision and leadership frommen like [Cedarville president] Dr. (Bill) Brown.”

Smith said he “truly grew up” during his time as a student at thesmall Christian university. The former NCCAA All-American in

Notes from the AD.....Exciting days ahead....

Dr. Alan Geist is in his third year as the Cedarville University Athletic Director. He overseesan athletic department that includes 16 Yellow Jacket varsity sports and cheerleading.

What an exciting time to be a part ofCedarville University Athletics! Wehave been blessed in so many ways.

The Athletic Department has contributed to andbeen a beneficiary of a rich spiritual and acad-emic tradition. Dr. Paul Dixon, Dr. DuaneWood, Dr. Don Callan, Pete Reese, Dr. MurrayMurdoch, Elvin King, Dr. Pam Johnson, Dr. DeeMorris, John McGillivray and so many othershave played a large part in the amazing thingsGod has done through CU athletics. As we con-tinue to build on this success with the support ofcurrent CU President Dr. Bill Brown and Provost Dr. John Gredy, the last year and a half has produced the unveiling of a new logo, additional personnel as a part of a restructured department, andconsistent progress through the NCAA membership process.

As we move forward, your support in so many ways is crucialto our success. Thanks so much for your interest, prayer, andfinancial support. The most important bit of information we canshare is that our moving forward has continued with the samegoal that has always been our foundation...our desire to glorifyGod and share Jesus Christ through an athletic department thatembodies one aspect of the educational process at CedarvilleUniversity. The Mission Statement of the Athletic Department (ourPhilosophy Statement is shared on page 5 of this edition of theSTING) is:

The Department of Athletics is a team of Christ-centered pro-fessionals that directs intercollegiate athletic competition forCedarville University. This competition enriches the spiritual, intel-lectual, physical, and emotional welfare of student athletes, enhances the reputation of the University, and is characterized byexcellence.

The Lord has continued His blessing by bringing some very tal-ented people to Cedarville. Through the reallocation of funds and

the temporary elimination of other positions, three new adminis-trative positions have been added to the department.

Annie Beall, a 2004 Cedarville graduate, has assumed theposition of Assistant Athletic Director for Administration. She isalso the Senior Woman Administrator in the Athletic Department.Chris Reese, a 1989 CU graduate, assumed the position ofAssistant Athletic Director for Events and Facilities in Decemberof 2009. For those that have not had the opportunity to meetAnnie and Chris, we hope to further introduce them in a later edi-tion of the STING.

A third new member of the Leadership Team in the AthleticDepartment is Drew Howard. Drew is Cedarville University!s firstCompliance Coordinator. He has done a great job over the lastyear and you will hear from him in each issue of the STING fromthis point forward as we introduce you to NCAA policies and pro-cedures.

The NCAA membership process has been quite an educationfor all of us. On September 1, 2010, Cedarville University official-ly entered Candidacy year two of the three-year process. If westay on course, 2010-2011 will be the last year of NAIA member-ship for Cedarville University. It is a bit sad to leave behind manyfriends and an acknowledged level of comfort as we make thismove. We have had some exciting years as members of theNAIA, but we believe that the Lord is leading us in a differentdirection as we look forward. CU should enter the provisional yearin the fall of 2011 and be approved into full NCAA membershipstatus in the fall of 2012.

Once again, your support is very important to us. Feel free tocommunicate with us as we continue to move forward. We areexcited about the things God will accomplish…

track told the crowd that no one—least of allSmith himself or King (his college coach)—would have believed what was in store forhim down the road.

“If someone would have come up to bothof us and said, "This somewhat fast guy whoreally didn!t like to practice all that much isone day gonna find himself as a leader ofmen and their families,! we!d both laugh,”Smith chuckled.

But through his time at Cedarville, Smithhoned the skills and maturity that have cat-apulted him to such a vital position in theprofessional football world.

“He certainly was developing leadershipqualities,” Cedarville sports informationdirector Mark Womack said of Smith!s timein college. “Being involved in leadershippositions like student government, classpresident, class officer—De was very per-sonable, and you could tell that he was agood communicator.

“He was very visible and popular, in agood way. In hindsight, you can see he pos-sessed the qualities that made him what heis today.”

Smith credits the university with develop-ing his ability to think critically. “The traininghere, whether it was law, economics,American government, politics—there areany number of intersection points that areimportant to understanding the business offootball. My first foray in understanding all ofthose things took place on this ground.”

CU vice president Robert Rohm remem-bers Smith as “a great student,” saying, “Hewas the kind of student you just wish youhad tons and tons of. That he!s a Cedarvillegrad just makes us proud.”

Smith referenced Martin Luther King, Jr.and biblical hero Abraham as examples ofliving by faith. He is directing the NFLPAduring uncertain times.

“I don!t know what the next step is goingto be, but I can tell you I have faith and trustthat we have been prepared and that we aresolidified in our faith to make that next step,”Smith concluded.

Womack is thankful for the way Smithrepresents his alma mater on such a visiblestage. “To see where the Lord has put De isphenomenal,” he said.

“Cedarville touts preparing the studentsfor whatever God!s going to put in front ofthem, and this is a test of that.”

Integration of Faith and Learning –

The CU Athletic Department is committed to integrating faith andlearning as part of the overall student experience. Student-ath-letes, coaches, and staff desire to develop a deeper relationshipwith Jesus Christ and share that relationship with others throughcompetition, sports camps, clinics, mission trips, service projects, and other venues. Intercollegiate athletics provides a stage fromwhich the truths of Christianity can be taught to student-athletesthrough the discipling relationship between coaches and playersand a platform from which Jesus Christ can be shared with theworld.

Student-Athlete Welfare –

In addition to the priority given to the spiritual welfare of CU stu-dent-athletes, their mental, physical, emotional, and social wel-fare is also of the utmost importance. At the heart of this concernis a strong focus on their academic success, which is comple-mented through the challenges of competition, with the opportu-nity to develop character traits associated with discipline, ethicalconduct, endurance, courage, leadership, sportsmanship, team-work, and faith. The CU Athletic Department strongly supports theNCAA Division II philosophy and objectives and commits to fol-lowing all policies and rules. Cedarville!s Athletic Departmentplaces a concentrated emphasis on supplying quality opportuni-ties for both its male and female athletes and strives to provideunique opportunities to experience diversity, share Jesus Christ, and further develop the student-athlete!s personal worldview.

Excellence –

CU athletics stresses equitable opportunity and excellence at alllevels. This mindset is an integral aspect of the mission of theuniversity and the athletic department strives to do the same inevery area. The goal is that the desire for excellence is evident inhiring and recruiting policies, in the actions of the department!spersonnel (including student-athletes, staff, fans, etc.), in thecompetitive level of the student-athletes and teams in the depart-ment, in the quality of the facilities and equipment, and in all otherareas of the program.

Reputation –

CU Athletics presents a window through which the outside worldsees Cedarville University. This externally focused, brand-enhancing view is a crucial element in the recruitment of studentsand the marketing and promotion of the university. Currentprospective students, parents, and the general public often do notseparate the overall reputation of a university from its athletic pro-gram. As such, the testimony and reputation of an institution!sathletic program, its level of competition and athletic achieve-ment, the other institutions against which it competes, and thequality of its athletic facilities have become major contributors toa university!s overall image.

Compliance

Hello Yellow Jacket Fans!

My name is Drew Howard. I am theCompliance Coordinator at CedarvilleUniversity. I have been given the honor toshare with you in this section of the new-look STING where you can expect to beupdated and informed on how the transitioninto the NCAA will affect the university, ath-letic department, student-athletes, and ofcourse the fans.

Also, be on the lookout for interestinginformation regarding the NCAA and its rules. I will regularlywrite on current topics and violations in the news, socialmedia, and compliance related issues that are pertinent.Compliance carries a certain stigma in the public. Schoolsfear the bad press and backlash that can result from "viola-tions! or "lack of institutional control.! Fear not! We have agreat group of Christ-centered coaches and athletic adminis-trators that will be working hard to make sure the only newsCedarville makes will be good news.

Violations will occur and mistakes will happen (the averageNCAA Division II institution has 12 violations per year) but theYellow Jackets will be forming a new reputation in a placewhere we are not known. Compliance, while in my title, is notmy job alone. Our entire university is making changes behindthe scenes. We also want theCedarville community to feelincluded. So, if you havequestions please feel free tosend them to:
