Methodology

Study areaThailand Vietnam

8

Page 9: The study of hygienic practices of small scale poultry slaughter house in Asian partnership countries

First results – investigations ongoing • Law and regulation

– There are many organization associated with SH but Department of

Livestock Development (DLD) is the main responsible organization to

control the slaughterhouse in Thailand

– Slaughterhouse Act has been used since 1992

– The Standard Slaughterhouse Regulation has been strictly used since

the outbreak of avian influenza

– All of small scale slaughterhouses do not meet the standard regulation

9

Page 10: The study of hygienic practices of small scale poultry slaughter house in Asian partnership countries

First results – Capacity Thailand = 30-50 birds/day Vietnam = 20-30 birds/day

10

Page 11: The study of hygienic practices of small scale poultry slaughter house in Asian partnership countries

• Socio-economics

– Average monthly income of SH owner is 34,500 Baht (1,150 USD)

– Average monthly expenses of SH owner is 24,000 Baht ( 800 USD)

35% (28/80) had to stop running business compared with last 2

years , mainly because the owners could not follow the DLD

regulation and unstable economics

First results – investigations ongoing

11

Page 12: The study of hygienic practices of small scale poultry slaughter house in Asian partnership countries

• Public health

– Improper hygienic management is common practices

– Majority of consumers did not realize the important of food

safety (eg. price more concern than quality )

• Environmental impact

– Majority of SH release the waste water to environment without

treatment

– Salmonella spp. were found in waste water, soil around the SH

First results – investigations ongoing

12

Summary of Biosecurity• Cleaning and disinfection

– Thailand : 75% clean the SH daily– Vietnam : 85% clean the SH daily

• Source of water – Thailand: 28% use underground water– Vietnam : 80% use underground water

• Officer visit – Thailand: 50% had officers visit 4-6 times/year– Vietnam: 75% had officers visit 1-2 times/year

SOME TYPICAL IMAGES OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

19

Page 20: The study of hygienic practices of small scale poultry slaughter house in Asian partnership countries

Planned activities for 2012 and beyond

• Finalising of remaining sampling (Feb 2012 –THAI)

• Joined analysis of field and laboratory data will be performed

tentatively in Jan-Feb 2012 (Thailand-Vietnam)(Mid term

workshop)

• Jointly identify policy recommendation

20

Page 21: The study of hygienic practices of small scale poultry slaughter house in Asian partnership countries

Planned activities for 2012 and beyond

• Possible Pilot trials for interventions

– Select the pilot slaughterhouses and apply/implement

identified interventions (prototype SH)

– (next project, new phases, funds pending)

21

Page 22: The study of hygienic practices of small scale poultry slaughter house in Asian partnership countries

Expected outputs and outcomes

• Output

– Recommendation of the hygienic practices in the small

scale poultry slaughter houses

• Outcome– Systemic approaches for sustainably improving the

hygienic status of slaughterhouses – Development of suitable hygienic practices in the small

scale poultry slaughterhouses

22

Page 23: The study of hygienic practices of small scale poultry slaughter house in Asian partnership countries

Perspectives

• The project is ongoing, the further development is still

monitored

• The collaboration among the stakeholders are expected to be

the results from Ecohealth approach

• The small scale poultry slaughterhouses should not be closed

because of the regulation
