A Message From The President

Hello all,

Summer has flown by once again, and it was a hot one this year. I hope everyone had the chanceto get out and use your boats this summer. We had 8 boats on the Chester River Cruise and afew came by boat to Bruce and Jill Ogden's party. There were other events that club membersparticipated in: October 1st. The Long Level Marina Show in Wrightsville, PA, sponsored by thePhiladelphia Chapter; The Annapolis Powerboat Show on October 13-16th; and Sultana's Down-rigging Festival is October 29-30th. We are having our Annual Meeting and Luncheon at the Innat Chesapeake Bay Beach Club on Sunday, November 13th. Watch your emails for moredetails. Join us for the parade for Christmas in St. Michael’s on December 10th.

Next year we will be celebrating our 30th annual show. Planning has already begun and we aregoing “all out” to make this our finest event ever. We will have with more boats, guest speakers, better parties and live entertainment. We are also reaching out to our neighboring chapters toencourage their members to attend our event and I encourage you to consider attending theirs.

I have agreed to stay on as Chapter President for one more year (unless one of you wants to takemy place.) I did so because of all the great board members, and other members who help makeall this happen. I encourage everybody to get more involved. I encourage all of you to help outif you can. For example, we are in dire need for someone who can help us out with managing thewebsite. Remember, this is your club, so please help out to make it better. If you have picturesor stories to share, please send them to our editor, Stephanie Ryan, so we can add it to theStuffing Box and get them up on the website.

Let’s all hope for a beautiful Fall, mild Winter and a warm Spring, so we can get back to boatingas soon as possible.

All the best,

George

A Message From The Editor

Greetings Happy Boaters:

As this goes to print, I recalled the non stop rain we had in the Spring. We had a hotSummer and a warm Autumn, but I am not ready to put the boats to bed for Winter. This isour post show issue, and it is coming out in October…maybe because I had too much funon the water this Summer.

Our Boat Festival in St. Michael’s was a huge success. Check out my photo spread in thisissue. We had beautiful sunny days, records numbers of attendees, and several newattractions. We had the Drew Nugent and the Midnight Society band playing live old timejazz. They even played through antique microphones, so the sound was reminiscent. They were unfortunately, stuck in a corner and didn’t play over the loudspeakers. I wasonly a short distance away at the Kids Pool, and I couldn't hear them. We will fix that nextyear. We changed the Kids Activities. This year, thanks to Ray Maule, we had super coolboats for the kids to build: a paddle wheel boat and sail boat, complete with bowsprit andkeel. The kids also raced their creations across our pond, that had currents, eddies andislands. Each race winner won ice cream. There were oceans of beautiful boats, both onthe land and water. The vendors also added a very nice touch to the experience, and theartisan craftsmanship was wonderful to see. On Monday, we had a fantastic cruise on theMiles River, and ended up as the guests of the very gracious Alice Ryan. The food waswonderful, the grounds and gardens were beautiful, and the camaraderie was epic.

Have you been anxiously awaiting the third installment of Return To The Classics? This isPart Three of Ralph Cattaneo’s piece on the restoration of the 1941 Chris Craft Sportsman.

The annual Christmas in St Michael’s Parade is Saturday December 10. Each year our clubhas a few of our boats and old cars in the parade, and gives rides to a few children fromthe Benedictine School. The Benedictine School offers educational opportunities forchildren with intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, and autism. For the last severalyears along with the parade, we provide Christmas gifts for the children who are full timeresidents of the school and don't have families to care for them during the holidays. We canuse your help making it a success. Our club board and officers generously fund this projectevery year but it usually only covers about half of what is needed. The rest is made up fromindividual donations. If you would like to donate a gift (games, toys, music CDs, and books, geared to younger children, as well as hats, gloves, scarves, and even items like hair careitems and toothbrushes), or money to purchase gifts, please contact Danny Buckinghamat 301-318-0007, or at [email protected]

See you on the water!Stephanie

In Part Three of “Return to the Classics,” I’ll update the progress being made on my 1948 Chris Craft 25 footSportsman boat restoration project by Wooden Boat Restoration in Millington, Maryland. With a full set ofplans from The Mariners’ Museum Library in Newport, Virginia for my 25 foot Sportsman, Wooden BoatRestoration (WBR) owner George Hazzard was ready to make sawdust. After selecting the best of thePhilippine mahogany wood purchased from Exotic Lumber in Annapolis, Hazzard and I began cutting andmilling the battens and side planks, using the originals as patterns. Hazzard painstakingly shaped each plankto a close tolerance fit, drilling and counter-sinking the Marine Silicon Bronze F/H Frearson wood fasteners, sourced through Bill Griffin at Fawcett Boat Supplies, Annapolis. Hazzard steam-bent the forward top twoplanks of both sides using a steam box. Next, WBR artisan Ken Phillips drilled out bungs to cover thefasteners from the same planks used on the sides to insure a grain match.

While the professionals at WBR worked on finishing new hull planks, I was busy detailing the bilge. Thismeant removing all the excess 3M 5200 that oozed out from under the stem, keel, and ribs of the new bottom.A sharp utility knife, razor blades, scraper, and a multi-tool got the job done. Once the clean-up was complete,I sanded and prepped the bilge for staining.

Granted, no one will ever see the bilge, nor will many understand why I put the effort into detailing it, but it’swhat I wanted to do, and now was the time to do it! Hazzard had replaced several hull side planks to correctrepairs made with short pieces of incorrect wood some 40+ years ago. We will replace the transom for thesame reasons.

The decks and covering boards are also new. About 75 percent of the rest of the wood in the boat is original. We are using modern glues and epoxy for the extensive re-fastening, which will in no way detract from theoriginal appearance or feel of the 1948 craftsmanship.

Meanwhile, we had an oops! Holly, Hazzard’s daughter Rachel’s six year-old spaniel, decided she could helpby chewing one of the forward deck ribs. Holly, with her boundless energy and tremendous curiosity abouteverything, typically spends her day running around the old 15 acre spinach farm chasing birds and squirrels. That day, she just wanted to be helpful inside working. After giving her a big hug and explaining to her howwe needed to use the rib for a pattern, I substituted the 68 year old boat part with a scrap of mahogany tokeep her happy and occupied. That’s life inside a wooden boat shop.

Look for my next article to be published early next year in PropTalk for more restoration updates.Maryland Public Television included a video entitled “Return to the Classics” as part of their “OutdoorsMaryland” television show. It covered the history of Chris Craft boats and my boat restoration project.
