ABSTRACT The denture-fitting surface of two soft lining materials and one acrylic denture from 3 patients with denture stomatitis were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The lining material showed overgrowth of the fitting surface by Candida albicans hyphee; the acrylic denture showed a surface plaque in which organisms could be identified. Experiments were carried out, using dental students, to illustrate the wide variation that can occur in the subiective assessment of the shade of teeth. Also, the constancy of shade of a pro- prietary silicate cement was investigated using a reflectometer develooed for the specific ouroose of measuring off-white colours.
