Now in its fifteenth year, the Partners in the Arts SummerInstitute is a week of dynamic professional development for teachersof all subjects who want to bring the arts into their classrooms. Experiencingthe arts during the Summer Institute is much more than observing. Instead, teachers work with artists through dance, music, drama, sculpture, drawingand painting and learn how to connect these art forms to core subjects.

Summer Institute workshops are led by award-winning classroomteachers and master teaching artists from nationally-recognized organiza-tions. Kennedy Center national touring artist Dylan Pritchett shows teachershow the art of storytelling can revitalize their curricula and their teachingpractice. New York-based dancer and choreographer Susan Griss, authorof Minds in Motion, leads dance and movement activities that inspirebreakthrough understandings in math, science, language arts, and history.Dr. Rosalind Flynn, co-author of A Dramatic Approach to Reading Com-prehension, demonstrates how theatre techniques inspire meaningfullearning in all subjects. Over the week, teachers will also learn about thecollections, galleries and arts organizations that make up Richmond’s vibrant cultural scene. Each day, teachers use these rich experiences todevelop collaborative, arts-based units plans specifically suited to theirsubject areas and grade levels.
