RESUMING PUBLIC MASSES IN KNOCKNINNY

Many churches will reopen for public Masses on Sunday next, 5th July.

The churches in Knockninny will not reopen for Masses on that Sunday.

When public Masses resume, the following procedures will apply: ENTERING AND LEAVING THE CHURCH:

o Those attending Mass will enter by the front door of the church only.

o They will queue, keeping the social distance (2m) from others in the queue.

o On entering the church, they will sanitise their hands.

o They will then follow the guidance of the ushers.

o On leaving the Church, they will again follow the instructions of the ushers. SEATING:

o On entering the church, ushers will guide them to their places. People are asked to cooperate with the ushers, and to fill the church from the front seats. After Mass, those seated at the back of the church will be the first to leave.

o To maintain social distance, every other bench in the church will be excluded as a

seating area.

o Because of social distance rules, most benches in our churches can only accommodate three persons. Families, however, can occupy a full bench.

HOLY COMMUNION:

o For the distribution of Holy Communion, Eucharistic Ministers and Priests will sanitise their hands before and after distributing Communion. They are also required to wear facemasks.

o People approaching for Holy Communion are required to approach the

priest/minister in single file, keeping a safe social distance (2m) from the person in front of them.

o One of the ushers will spray sanitiser on their hands as they come forward. COLLECTIONS:

o Collection baskets will not be passed around the church during Mass.

o As they enter the church, people are asked to drop their envelopes into the special collection box in the porch.

GENERAL POINTS:

o Because of the social distance regulations, seating accommodation in each church will be limited. When all seats have been filled, no more people can be admitted into the church.

o The dispensation from attending Sunday Mass still applies. Those who are elderly

and/or vulnerable are not expected to attend Sunday Mass. They can join in the Mass by web cam and, if they have a family member attending the Mass, it can be arranged that the family member could bring Holy Communion to the person at home.

o Elderly people who wish to avoid the larger congregations at Sunday Mass may, if

they wish, attend a weekday Mass instead of the Sunday Mass. They are advised that it is sufficient that they attend just one Mass in the week.

o Eucharistic Ministers who do not feel comfortable about distributing Holy

Communion in these circumstances are not expected to do so. They should notify the person in charge in each church area.

o People who wish to wear a facemask during Mass may do so.

o Altar servers will not be required for Sunday Masses until future notice.

o All Blessings of Graves ceremonies are cancelled for 2020.

First Friday Visits: Over the next few weeks Fr Alwill intends to resume the traditional visits to the sick and housebound in the parish. The procedures for these visits will have to change considerably from the standard routine that he has operated since coming to the parish. Further notices in regard to these visits will be made over the coming weeks. The Sacrament of Baptism: Celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism has been resumed in the parish. However, because of the Covid-19 Regulations, a number of restrictions will apply to each celebration: a) Including parents and godparents, the group attending is limited to a total of ten people. b) Within the church, family groups should maintain the 2m social distance from each other. c) Young children will not be allowed to wander about the church. d) Neither the priest nor the godparents will make any physical contact with the child to be baptised. e) The priest will use cotton buds for the anointing. Families planning to hold a get-together after the Baptism ceremony are reminded that they should adhere to all current Covid-19 regulations in relation to such gatherings. For further information, please contact Fr Alwill at 028 6774 8315. Both churches in the parish are open for private prayer St Ninnidh’s Church, Derrylin, and St Mary’s Church, Teemore, are open for people who might like to visit their church, to light candles and to offer up private prayer. We request that all those making such visits in either church would make use of the hand-sanitisers at the doors and, if there are other people in the church, would adhere to the social distancing regulations. St Ninnidh’s Church, Derrylin, will not be open during the celebration of the web cam Masses on Sundays.

KNOCKNINNY SUNDAY NEWSLETTER 28th June 2020

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

There is great goodness in our country and in our world. This became clear when our communities were thrown into turmoil in recent months. Long before the official initiatives sprang into action to support those in need during the nationwide ‘lockdown,’ stories began to emerge of the ways in which communities were mobilising to make sure their most vulnerable members were looked after. Local supermarkets delivered goods, postmen and women checked in on the elderly, neighbours made phone calls and arranged to pick up groceries and prescriptions. Through it all, we began to realise how much we depend on each other. As the noise of everyday life fell silent, we began to ponder: what is it that makes us a community? Parishes were grappling with the same question. In the temporary absence of access to Mass and the sacraments, what makes us a community of disciples of Jesus? Every effort was made to reach out to parishioners, through online Masses, prayer initiatives and practical help and support. In every parish in the country, volunteers became the face of Christ to others. In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays down the markers of the Christian community. His key points are welcome and compassion. When we reach out in a spirit of welcome and neighbourliness, when we give as little as a drink of water to another person, we are on the right path. In his Easter message, Archbishop Eamon Martin said: ‘In our present situation we have seen the light of the risen Christ shine out… in the kindness shown by neighbour to neighbour and in gentle and simple acts of compassion carried out by countless “Good Samaritans.” Despite the uncertainty, suffering and grief caused by the pandemic, the Lord is near.’ Jesus said ‘Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me.’ Prayer of Cardinal Newman

God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.
