Friday, February 15, 2012 Dear Prospective Suzuki Parent: Thank you for your interest in the Hartt Suzuki Program. Since its inception in 1967, our program has grown into one of the largest, most reputed Suzuki programs in the country, serving more than 300 students annually. In addition to private lessons and group classes on violin, viola, cello, bass, piano and guitar, instructional opportunities include five string orchestras, a guitar orchestra, workshops, and the Hartt Suzuki Institute. Students in our Suzuki community present formal concerts and recitals in addition to enjoying community outreach performances such as playing the National Anthem at New Britain RockCats games (viola tour group), Hartford Symphony pre-concert performances, and the Festival of Trees at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Enclosed in this packet is important information that will serve as a guide as your family prepares to join our Hartt Suzuki community.
The rewards of studying in our Suzuki Program are great, both educationally and musically. This is a result of the excellent training of our faculty, the strength of the Suzuki philosophy, and the commitment and dedication of each of our families. The secret of the worldwide success of the Suzuki method is teamwork: parent, teacher and child working together. The parent attends and takes notes at all lessons and group classes, supervises home practice, keeps track of assignments and provides a positive environment for learning. For violin and viola students, our comprehensive program also includes partnership with the Hartt School in training aspiring Suzuki teachers. The collegiate division offers a Master’s Degree in Performance with an emphasis on Suzuki Pedagogy, and students in the program complete internship hours with beginning students. Similar to a teaching hospital, our graduate students serve as interns and assistants to our regular faculty. Graduates of this program have gone on to establish successful studios in various locations throughout the country as well as in Canada and Hong Kong. Depending upon compatibility of schedules, your child may be assigned to two teachers: a Hartt Community Division Suzuki faculty member and a second year graduate student who has already completed comprehensive teacher training in Suzuki Books 1-4. Lessons will be shared and carefully monitored by the Community Division faculty to ensure that your child will receive the best instruction available. In addition to completing your observations, you can begin this exciting journey immediately by purchasing and listening to the Suzuki Volume 1 CD of the instrument of your choice (Revised version for strings, New International Edition for piano, guitar has not yet been revised). We also recommend reading “Nurtured by Love” by Shinichi Suzuki, “Ability Development form Age Zero” by Shinichi Suzuki, and “To Learn With Love” by Constance and William Starr to better acquaint yourself with the Suzuki philosophy. These materials are available at the University of Hartford Bookstore, which can be reached at (860) 768-4801. Once your child is accepted into the program your teacher will be happy to help you in the process of acquiring your instrument by providing the names of rental programs or sellers. Please note that we require that all piano students own an acoustic piano. Electronic or digital pianos are not acceptable. We are pleased that you are considering having your child study in our program and we look forward to meeting you and your child. Sincerely, The Hartt Suzuki Team

The Suzuki Triangle
Teacher
Child Parent
In the Suzuki
approach, success depends upon the
triangular relationship of parent, teacher and child,
all rooted in a positive learning environment
While observing lessons, we encourage you
to notice the following Suzuki points:
Development of Concentration Use of Repetition and Review Modeling by Teacher Building of Skill upon Skill Emphasis on Posture Parent-Teacher Communication Note taking

Steps to Enrollment
1. Schedule observations Using the enclosed lesson and group class schedules and teacher contact information, determine which days and times work best for you and your child, then contact the specific instructor to schedule observations. Only the specific lessons and times listed in this packet are available for observation. For example, if you would like to observe a cello lesson early on Tuesday afternoon, March 13, you would consult the lesson schedule on page 11, see that Carmen Irons teaches a lesson at 2pm on Tuesdays, then contact Carmen using the information for her on page 9 to request to observe that lesson on Tuesday, 3/13. Carmen would reply, and you would be set to observe the lesson.
2. Complete 6 observations You will need to complete 5 private lessons and 1 group class and receive teacher signatures for each. This requirement helps you to become familiar with both of these elements of the Suzuki program. All enrolled Suzuki students participate in both private lessons and group classes. *reminder - 3 of the 5 private lessons and the group class observations must be on the instrument your child will study.
3. Return the completed observation form on or before Saturday, June 2, 2013 If you have not completed your observations by that date, you may keep the form and continue observations in Fall of 2013 for possible enrollment in Spring 2014.
4. Wait for your teacher placement You receive information about your teacher assignment, group class assignment, the initial new parent meeting and parent orientation classes, and a registration packet by August 15. *Because our program is one of the most reputed of its kind in the country, space for new students is limited. In the event that we are not able to place you with a teacher for the requested semester, your name will be added to a waitlist and you will be contacted when space becomes available.
5. Register
Register for lessons by filling out and returning the registration form along with your tuition deposit. You can also obtain a registration packet by downloading it from hcd.hartford.edu or by stopping by any of our offices. Please do not register until you have received your teacher assignment.
6. Attend new parent meeting
This is a one-time meeting for all new parents in our Suzuki program, date and time TBD. You will receive this information along with your teacher placement by August 15.
7. Begin lessons and parent orientation classes
For strings and guitar, the parent orientation classes are held together instead of the first 4 group classes. Instrument-specific parent education classes will continue for 2 weeks after that. For piano, parents also attend the first 4 parent orientation classes, but families will also attend the first group class during that month. Dates and times TBD. You will receive this information along with your teacher placement.
The purpose of observing lessons is to see the Suzuki Method and its philosophy in action. When observing another student’s lesson, please arrive 5 minutes early. Please help your child listen quietly while in the lesson. If your child becomes restless, please leave the studio (it is okay to do so). In order to avoid distracting the student taking the lesson, please save any questions you may have for email or phone conversations after the lesson. Thank you for your interest in beginning your Suzuki journey.

A few things to keep in mind about observations:
The lessons take place in TWO locations. The piano lessons are held at The Hartt School (Main Campus). All string classes meeting on WEEKENDS also take place on Main Campus. Most string and guitar classes meeting during the WEEK do so at the Universalist Church in West Hartford (UUC). The location is indicated next to the lesson. Make sure you are heading to the right location.
Choose your preferred lesson to observe and contact the teacher. If you send e-mail, please do so at least 48 hours before the lesson. You will receive a short confirmation that the lesson will be taking place as scheduled. If you contact the teacher by phone you will receive a phone call back ONLY if the teacher knows that the lesson is cancelled.
If you arrive for your observation and the lesson is not taking place because of student absence such as sudden illness, the teacher will spend a few minutes with you and your child getting to know you a little and answering any question you might have.
Please arrive to your observation five minutes before the lesson start time. This way you will not be interrupting important instruction time.
Please reserve all questions for e-mail or phone conversation. The teachers will rarely be able to discuss questions during or after the lesson as they have to make sure to start their next lesson on schedule.
Please note the black-out dates and vacation/make up weeks on the enclosed calendars. Lessons and group classes will not be available for observation on those dates.
