In hospitals, where lots of people with different needs come together, communication is particularly vital. Everyone has a different perspective. Patients expect a quick response when they have desires or feel bad, while doctors and nurses may have a large number of patients to look after. Especially at night this can become a real challenge. There are patients who can’t get around by themselves, for whom transfers to other parts of the building constantly have to be arranged – from ward to theatre, from recovery to ward, to physiotherapy and back or to the lab for a blood sample. In addition, there are so many other tasks that need to be arranged and coordinated as efficiently as possible. Hospital managers shoulder a great responsibility –

not only for patients and staff, but also for commercial success and robust operations. And to meet all these different concerns and interests. Each hospital depends on an optimum solution to its communication needs to meet all these different concerns and interests.

Good communication stands out due to clear messages that everyone involved can understand. More than ever, with hospitals competing among themselves, getting the message is crucial. A hospital must treat patients as clients, respect their preferences and expectations and seek to accommodate them to survive in the market.

In many European countries, health care systems are expe-riencing radical change. The reasons and the consequences are very different and this guides our ideas and our product development.

There are some markets, for example, where the priority is to modernise existing hospitals. On the one hand, patients are staying fewer nights, but on the other hand demographics have brought higher case loads, so the available beds and rooms provide appropriate capacity. The primary objective is to raise technical standards, enhancing patient comfort and optimising organisational fl ows. Our task here is to respond to the specifi c environment and its particular requirements. A smooth tran-sition from “old” to “new” is decisive. After all, operations must continue without interruption. In most cases even a brief closure is inconceivable. We have gained a lot of experience with such scenarios and our competence in the fi eld is extensive.

There are other countries witnessing a broad wave of new-builds, and what they need from our product is quite different. Usually there is a keen interest in innovative solutions with features such as listable interfaces to hospital management systems or adaptation to personnel security systems. When it comes to human life and health, the demands of communication and safety are inseparable. To safeguard these demands, call systems are standardised to DIN VDE 0834.

Security and IP: Not a contradiction.The right use of IP-based solutions can represent a useful addition to regular call systems and communication solutions. But not everything that is technically possible can meet the stringent standards required.

The call system has a separate, independent cable network. Added value services are simply transported as an additional element via LAN or telephone line, for example, under the same cover plate into a connecting plug or into the device. When it comes to func-tionality, however, the systems remain fully independent. Case study 1 complies with DIN VDE 0834.

The call system on each ward has its own cable network. Several stations are to be linked together via a standardised cable network (DIN/EN 50173) and standard network components. Tunstall for the day-to-day running of hospitals:In the best company.

Charité University Hospital's Faculty of Medicine at the Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany:The Charité University Hospital in Berlin has been a loyal Tunstall customer since 1967. Over the course of more than 40 years, all of Tunstall’s nursecall systems have been deployed there. Up until 2009, the Campus Charité Mitte (CCM) and the Campus Virchow-Klinikum (CVK) operated two independent ComCenter switchboards from where communication in both buildings was controlled. The decision was then made, for orga-nisational and cost reasons, to control the communication for both buildings, i.e.. the Campus Charité Mitte too, from a single switchboard at the Virchow campus. As a result, the calls from 2 buildings and 1,600 beds are now coordinated and organised via a single switchboard.

Südharz Hospital, Nordhausen, Germany:The nursecall system in the Südharz hospital is the heart of the entire hospital’s communication and organisation system. From a central point, the ComCenter, trained nurses handle all patient calls. With each call, all of the patient’s key information is displayed directly on the monitor. This saves time – time that the nursing staff can dedicate to the patient. Each year, around 44,000 kilometres of walking are also saved. The hospital moreover uses many other options offered by the flamenco® ComCenter: to provide greater clarity, MRSA/ORSA rooms are marked in red, in order to enable these rooms to be identified at a glance and exclude them from certain procedures for organisational reasons. flamenco®’s flexibility is also harnessed by allowing ward limits to be virtually redrawn, allowing multi-use rooms to be put together for area-based care.

Johannes Wesling Hospital, Minden, Germany:When a new hospital was built, the first in North Rhine-West-phalia in 20 years, public interest was as great as the compe-tition among the suppliers. Tunstall, however, impressed right across the board with its flamenco® nursecall system.
