But it is not only liquid foods that can be filledin our carton packs – paste and chunky foods suchas soups, sauces, tomato products and desserts can also be filled. In many food sectors, cartonpacks have now become the preferred packagingform rather than just a practical alternative.

combisafe opens up new possibilitiesTo expand the range of products that can be

offered in carton packaging, we have developedcombisafe. This new packaging system from SIG Combibloc is a heat-resistant carton packagingseries, in a range of volumes, that makes it possibleto fill virtually any food containing large chunkyparticulates into a carton pack, including tomatoproducts, vegetables, fruits and ready-meals.

Aseptic technology – the heart of our systemSIG Combibloc uses aseptic technology. The

aseptic process, known in the industry as HTST(High Temperature /Short Time), is one of the safestmethods of processing foods. Before being filledinto the packages, the products are heated toa high temperature for a short time, immediatelycooled again and then filled into sterilised cartonpacks. Nutrient content, vitamins, flavours andcolours are retained. The aseptically packaged foodscan be stored for long periods without refrigerationand without the use of preservatives.

Variety in carton packagingAll over the world, a huge variety of products,

including classics such as milk and juices, nectarsand fruit juice drinks, are sold in carton packs fromSIG Combibloc. Still water, iced tea and functionalwellness drinks are also in safe hands when packagedin carton packs. Even products such as wine andbaby food, which make very special demands of theirpackaging, are perfectly protected in a carton pack.Thanks to our flexible filling technology, drinks containing pieces of real fruit or cereal grainscan also be filled into aseptic carton packs from SIG Combibloc. In the Liquid Dairy and NonCarbonated Soft Drinks sectors, concepts like thisopen up a wealth of new product ideas that offeradded value and new taste experiences.

One of the most important functions of any form of packaging is to protectthe food. In aseptic carton packs, foods are packaged hygienically and arelight-tight and air-tight. Carton packs retain the natural aromas, vitamins,flavours, colours and nutrients of the product.

combibloc and combifit: selling varietyOur two format series, combibloc and combifit,

gives the right look for standard and premium prod-ucts. combibloc and combifit are every bit as idealas mini-packs for a quick drink on the go as they arein larger sizes for everyday family life or catering.combibloc is available in nine base areas with fillvolumes ranging from 125ml to 2,000ml, andcombifit comes in five formats, with fill volumesfrom 150ml to 1,500ml. This means the packagingcan be tailored to best position the product forretail and for consumers. And with identical baseareas, combibloc and combifit can be filled on thesame filling machine, and then fitted with closuresor have drinking straws attached.

Whichever solution you choose, in combiblocand combifit, every product becomes an attention-grabber. With the four printable side panels, thecarton pack offers ample space for visuals and displayoptions to create an impact at the point of sale.

combishape: the individual shape of the carton pack

combishape opens up new dimensions when it comes to carton design. With combishape, youcan give drinks in aseptic carton packs a distinctive,individual shape. combishape is all about differentia-tion: this carton series frees aseptic carton packagingfrom the constraints of the basic rectangular shape.The proven composite material and the aseptic fillingprocess ensure the food retains its high quality.

Our closures: adding convenience to the carton pack

Convenience is more than just a passing trend –when it comes to consumer demands, it is an abso-lute must-have. With carton packaging, closuresgive even greater convenience, guaranteeing easyopening, smooth pouring and secure reclosure. This means the product stays protected even afterit has been opened.

The world’s first closure for aseptic beveragecartons, the combiTop flat closure, hit the marketin 1993, and many other opening solutions havesince been added to the SIG Combibloc range. Flat closures, screw caps and a special closure forsmall package sizes make aseptic carton packsfrom SIG Combibloc even easier to handle, andmeet modern consumer demands for greater con-venience. We are always working on creative ideasand formats for new opening solutions, to makethe carton pack an even more attractive package.

Lots of content, little packagingThe packaging material for our aseptic carton

packs is made up of three components: cardboard,polyethylene and aluminium. 75 per cent of thepackage consists of cardboard, made from wood, a renewable resource. The inner polyethylene layersact as a liquid barrier, while the outer layer keepsout moisture. Cardboard gives the package thenecessary stability while aluminium protects thecontents from light, oxygen and external odoursand flavours. Around 27 grams of packaging isenough to package one litre of product – so thepackaging constitutes less than three per cent ofthe total product weight.

combisafe carton packs, which are sterilisedafter the filling process has taken place, are madeof cardboard, polypropylene and aluminium. Theinner polypropylene coating forms a liquid barrier forthe product, and at the same time acts as a sealinglayer for the carton. Along with a special print process, the outer polypropylene layer makes thecarton pack heat-resistant and moisture-resistant,so it is suitable for pasteurisation or sterilisation in an autoclave.

Our packaging material plants produce billionsof carton sleeves each year, which are later filled onour filling machines at our customers’ premises.

The structure and composition of our carton packs provides optimal protection for foods, keeping them safe from light, oxygen and externalflavours and odours.

High quality printing for perfect coloursAfter coating, the cartonboard is printed with

up to six colours. SIG Combibloc uses the high-quality gravure printing process – a print technol-ogy that gives particularly vivid colours. The gravureprinting method also allows the use of innovativeprinting technologies that make the carton packseven more attractive.

Safety through precisionThe coated and printed cardboard is then cut

to the correct size for the various different packageformats and sizes. These blanks are stamped withprecisely marked grooves, preparing them for sub-sequent folding. The next step is the sealing of thelongitudinal seam. This special fold ensures that thefood does not come into contact with an unlami-nated cardboard edge. The longitudinal sealingrepresents an additional guarantee of quality. Theflat carton sleeves are delivered to the filling com-pany and aseptically filled at its premises on a fillingmachine from SIG Combibloc.

Hygiene and quality managementFor us, quality, safety and hygiene are important

considerations in enabling us to fulfil our respon-sibilities and meet customer needs, worldwide.

For this reason, we have implemented certifiedquality management systems in accordance withISO 9001 at all of SIG Combibloc’s manufacturingsites and R&D centres. Quality management systems guarantee that all quality standards are metand business processes are continuously improved.

We have instituted certified hygiene manage-ment systems in accordance with the principles of theinternationally established HACCP concept (hazardanalysis and critical control points). The aim of thehygiene management system is to ensure the safetyof the packaging material and the packaging systemin terms of food safety and hygiene regulations,and to ensure a high level of hygiene is maintainedwithin production and storage areas.

High-performance products: Our filling machines

Well filledThe flat carton sleeves manufactured at our

packaging plants are delivered to the filling com-pany on space-saving pallets, and are filled at the company’s premises on SIG Combibloc fillingmachines.

The filling machines, designed and built by SIG Combibloc, shape each carton sleeve individ-ually and seal the base. The interior of the cartonpack is then sterilised. In the aseptic zone of thefilling machine, the already sterilised product is filled into the carton packs. Finally, the package is ultrasonically sealed above the fill level, and not through the product. This prevents solid foodparticles from getting caught in the sealing seam.

The combifit packages are shaped into theirfinal form, and optional closures are applied, onlyafter the aseptic filling process has taken placeand the carton packs have been sealed within theaseptic zone of the filling machine.

High-speed filling – fast, efficient and flexibleWith a capacity of up to 24,000 carton packs

per hour, filling machines from SIG Combibloc areunbeatably fast when it comes to filling drinks andliquid foods into aseptic carton packs.

The machines are not just fast; they also workextremely efficiently and flexibly: in just two minutes,a machine can be switched to any one of up toseven different package volumes. With the samebase area, changing the format from combibloc tocombifit also takes just a few minutes.

With the development of new high-performancefilling machines, we have succeeded in combininghigh speed, efficient performance and flexibility. Thismeans greater output, with the usual high productquality, flexibility and low wastage rates.

The demands placed on modern filling machines are changing constantly.To enable our customers to respond quickly and smoothly to markettrends, we develop filling machines that do their job efficiently and economically, and can be used flexibly.

Perfectly tuned: the SIG Combibloc systemAs well as filling machines, SIG Combibloc’s

fully comprehensive system expertise includes appli-cators for shaping the combifit carton packs andfor applying optional closures. These applicators arealso designed by our engineers and manufacturedby us, and are made to work perfectly with our filling machines.

Our filling machine technology features a computer-assisted operating system. The entire filling process is operated and controlled via atouch-screen monitor.

Everything you need to know, at a glance,with the ECS software solution

To let you see at a glance how well your machines are performing, the filling equipment canbe fitted with the Efficiency Control System (ECS).Developed by SIG Combibloc, this software solutionto monitor, control and evaluate all the relevantproduction data enhances the entire filling processand helps to reduce filling facility downtime to a minimum, with the aim of continuous processimprovement. Production volumes are systematicallybalanced and the efficiency of the equipment con-stantly monitored.

Smooth production processesA filling line is only truly efficient if all its com-

ponents are working together smoothly. This iswhy we work with you to decide on the equip-ment layout, the port connections, the materialsconsumption and the required power supplies. Weare also available to advise you on the integrationof important components downstream from theproduction process – depending on the line con-figuration, this could include applicators for strawsand closures, storage areas or tray-packing equip-ment. This is how we ensure a smooth productionprocess.

Format flexibilityWith the same base area, the combibloc and the

corresponding combifit carton packs can be filledusing the same filling machine. Inside the machine,the filling process is the same for both formats.Usually, the changeover from combibloc to thematching combifit format can be done in twominutes. There is no need to change machine parts.The combifit carton packs are shaped into theirfinal form, and optional closures are applied, onlyafter the aseptic filling process has taken place andthe top seam of the package has been sealed.

Volume flexibilityFor all combibloc and combifit formats, switch-

ing to a different fill volume takes just two minutes,with a few simple adjustments to the filling machine.There is no need to re-sterilise the machine or changemachine parts. The rapid volume changeover ensuresoptimal use of machine capacity and keeps machinedowntimes to a minimum.

Design flexibilityTo change to another package design, just

insert new carton sleeves into the magazine – a switch that can be done with no interruption tothe production process, and no wastage. Thisdesign flexibility offers the simplest and quickestoption to fill a product in a variety of differentpackage designs. It enables you to fill products inaseptic carton packs with the right visual design for your target markets and distribution channels,even under a range of different brand names.

Product flexibilityThe flexibility of the SIG Combibloc system

makes it extremely versatile. As well as liquidfoods, paste and chunky foods such as soups,sauces, tomato products, desserts and baby foodcan also be aseptically filled, because the cartonpacks from SIG Combibloc are sealed above thefill level only after the product has been filled. This prevents solid food particles from gettingcaught in the sealing seam.

This flexibility clears the way for innovative drinkscontaining, for instance, pieces of real fruit or cerealgrains. New product concepts in the Liquid Dairyand Non Carbonated Soft Drinks sectors have setthe ball rolling for the introduction of a wealth ofnew product ideas.

The combisafe retortable packaging systemopens up even more possibilities for processingchunky foods. With product and package sterilisedtogether, there is virtually no limit to the size andproportion of chunky particulates the product cancontain.

combisafe is based on the proven sleeve systemfrom SIG Combibloc. With the combisafe packagingsystem, up to four tracks of the filling machine canbe used, permitting a precisely controlled outputof up to 12,000 carton packs per hour. This meansmachine performance can be quickly and flexiblyadjusted to the desired output. And if the basearea of the packages is the same, the volume canbe switched in an unbeatable two minutes. Thecarton design can be changed with no interruptionto the production process, and no wastage. Thanksto the modular structure of the combisafe fillingsystem, up to four fill levels can be combined. combisafe offers food manufacturers unrivalledproduct flexibility.

At our company, we believe in the importance of thinking and acting inan ecologically sound manner. Incorporating the sustainable managementof all environmental factors into our operations is an inherent part of ourcorporate strategy.

Our carton packs: gentle on climateCarton packaging leaves only a small carbon

footprint – with obvious benefits for climate protec-tion. The results of a life cycle assessment conductedby the Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung(IFEU /Institute for Energy and EnvironmentalResearch) show that in terms of their impact on the Greenhouse Effect and the use of fossil fuelresources, carton packs have a significantly lowerenvironmental impact than drinks packaging manu-factured using crude oil. Carton packs generatearound two to three times less environmentallyharmful gas than disposable PET bottles, whose primary raw material is crude oil.

Our primary raw material: renewableCarton packs from SIG Combibloc are com-

posed predominantly of pulp fibre, obtained fromrenewable wood resources. Sustainable manage-ment of forestry resources ensures that for everytree felled, several young trees are planted.

We make sure that the wood used for the card-board of our packages can be traced back to itsplace of origin, and only wood from certified forests,or from controlled and acceptable sources, is used.We insist that our suppliers of unprocessed card-board provide the correct Chain of Custody certifica-tion in accordance with the international standardsestablished by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Our manufacturing process: conserving resources

For SIG Combibloc, reducing energy consumptionand CO2 emissions are important environmentalobjectives. Active environmental management hasbeen an inherent part of our packaging materialproduction for many years. Our environmentalmanagement system, in accordance with ISO 14001,covers the development, manufacture and sale ofcarton packaging and filling machines.

Starting with the design and operation of ourfilling machines, protecting the environment is animportant concern for us. We work constantly toimprove the energy consumption of our facilities.Our latest filling machines use 25 per cent lesswater, 30 per cent less energy and 54 per cent lesscompressed air. This reduces the operating costsper installed capacity and conserves resources.

Transporting our carton packs: saving fuelCarton packaging has obvious transport advan-

tages. Including the closure, a 1-litre carton packweighs just 28.5 grams. As they are delivered tothe filling company's premises as flat carton sleeves,the shipping volume of a truck can be used to fullpotential. Even when carrying filled carton packs,a truck is transporting around 95 per cent productand only 5 per cent packaging. More efficient trans-portation saves fuel and reduces emissions.

Used carton packaging: fully recyclableUsed carton packaging is suitable for all local

and national recycling and disposal options. Cartonpacks are 100 per cent recyclable, offer a high calorific value in thermal recycling, and take upvery little space in landfills.

In many countries, carton packaging is alreadyroutinely recycled. And it is not just the high papercontent of 75 per cent, but also the remainingresources – 21 per cent polyethylene and an average4 per cent aluminium – that are recovered andrecycled. The closures, too, can be recycled withoutdifficulty along with the polyethylene and aluminiumremains.

Ecologically advantageousOur carton packs represent an ecologically

advantageous form of packaging, giving an out-standing environmental performance in terms ofGreenhouse Effect and fossil fuel consumption.This has been proven repeatedly in life cycle assess-ments conducted by independent institutes.
