Welcome to Temple Ohabai Sholom. Each year we gather for the High Holiday services, a time for personal re ection, family gatherings and to get connected. Our doors are open and everyone is welcomed.

Our many hosts and hostesses and the Board of Trustees look forward to the opportunity to extend a greeting and introduce themselves to you as you enter The Sanctuary. We look forward to seeing our 725 + family members, their extended families and guests. We would also like to welcome area college students and those unaf liated Jews looking for that special place to worship. If you are new to our Temple, please make sure you sign in with Nancy Richardson so that she may provide you with information regarding Temple life.

I would also like to welcome our newest Temple family members – those attending their rst High Holiday Service as a Temple Member and those attending their rst as a Jew. During the past year we have had fty new families join our Temple and over twenty individuals attended class with Rabbi Shana Mackler and Patty Marks as they have become Jews by Choice by completing their conversion.

During these High Holy Day services please take the time to re ect on the many strengths of our congregation. Our extraordinary clergy and professional staff, under the leadership of Rabbi Mark Schiftan are the foundation and guiding light of everything we do. We offer programs and services throughout the year that offers something for everyone. We have numerous committees that offer you an opportunity to “Get on Board.” Whether you have children in our accredited Preschool or attending our nationally recognized Religious School; whether you attend Lunch with the Rabbi or attend Torah Study you have many opportunities to get connected with your Temple.

I would like to extend a special acknowledgement to Nancy Richardson, Mark Shepard, Erin Zagnoev, Lisa Crockett, Mitzie Russell, Lynda Gutcheon and Corye Nelson. They have worked tirelessly preparing for the High Holidays.

High Holy Day BabysittingThe Temple will offer High Holy Days babysitting ONLY

for the following services: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah Morning, Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Morning for the children of Temple members up to age 5 for a nominal fee of $10.00 per child, per service.

Our goal is to provide the kind of care you expect for your children. To do so, we need your cooperation. The size of our membership and the increased demand for this service, as well as our desire to provide well-

organized, safe care for the children, require that the following procedures be followed:

1. Parents must be attending services in The Temple building. 2. Babysitting is by reservation only. (the deadline for Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Morning Service is October 5th). No exceptions!

3. Children arriving without a reservation will not be able to remain in the babysitting area.

4. Please pack a snack or other items your child may need during the babysitting times.

Reservations may be made by calling 356-8009 or emailing playschool@templenashville.org.

We will need to know the ages of your children and the services you will be attending.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. Pick up your grocery bags in the pre-function area. Food should be brought to The Temple on Yom Kippur.

The Religious School Second Year of the Temple CommunityOne Community - Two Projects

Project 1This year, as a community, we will be collecting electronic items that are no longer useable or want-ed such as cell phones, laptops, desktops, radios, stereos, monitors, small televisions, printers and all kinds of other stuff! You can bring the items to the Religious School of ce and we will store them

until our 9th graders pack them up and ship them to “Recycling Fundraiser”.

Project 2The money raised from the sale of these electronics will go to Habitat for Humanity so that we can

participate as a congregation in the building of a house for someone in need. If you do not have electronics to donate, you are certainly welcome to make a personal donation.

The Temple’s Chavurah

We are in the process of forming more connections

among our Temple family. Known as a Chavurah, these

“friendship” groups meet regularly in people’s homes

or different venues, and share experiences together.

If you’re interested in joining a Chavurah, please call

At our Mussar gatherings on the rst Wednesday night of each month at 7:00 , we seek to explore and add different spiritual practices to our lives.

It is our hope that these spiritual practices, from the rich well-spring of Jewish history, will become new spiritual disciplines for us, and will increase our wisdom to meet life’s challenges with renewed strength.

Currently, we are reading from the Talmud's Pirke Avot, a collection of wisdom from Jewish sages, compiled around 200CE. Reading from a Jewish text at each session facilitates our discussions and allows us to hear personal re ections and varied perspectives of each other’s spiritual journeys.

We welcome more participants for two reasons: First, the more people who participate, the more our minds are stimulated with different stories and interpretive directions. Secondly, expanding our group helps us practice sayings from Pirke Avot, such as:

"Who is wise? A person who learns from everyone he/she meets."

Mussar teaches that nurturing our inner lives,a purpose of our monthly gatherings, enables us to better the world we live in.

Keep us in mind. Feel free to join us at any of our gatherings. No preparation is necessary.

Young Adult Temple Dues Structure

It is with great pride that the Temple has a dues (annual giving) structure for full time students, members under the age of 30 and ages 30-32.

The Temple wants its members to feel welcome in our sacred home and does not want the cost of membership to prohibit young adults from joining or maintaining their membership.

• Full Time Students: $36

• Under 30: $180 with an additional $18 building/security fee

• Ages 30-32: Half off the minimum membership level and an additional $50 building/security fee

The Boulevard BoltThanksgiving Day 2011Imagine a world where Baptists, Jews and Episcopalians pause from carving the

Thanksgiving turkey and join hands to serve the homeless.

No imagination is necessary - that’s actually what happens each Thanksgiving Day in Nashville as three congregations work together to put on the Boulevard Bolt, a 5-mile race on Belle Meade Boulevard. The review will take approximately 10 minutes.

Please bring new or gently used suitcases to The Temple to be donated to Nashville’s Children,

who are currently in fostercare so they might safely transport their personal belongings!

The Department of Children’s Services will distribute these bags!

The Temple’s Caring Connection offers a wide range of support for our congregation. We coordinate the delivery of meals and gifts, send notes, provide transportation assistance, plant memorial trees in Israel, and make hospital and home visits to members in need of connection. Since the High Holidays last year, members of the Caring Connection have reached out to provide support to almost 200 congregants or their families in times of need and celebration, including deaths, illnesses, births, and weddings.

The Caring Connection relies on congregants to reach out to other Temple members and to let us know of a congregant in need of support during their times of joy and sorrow. Please join us in lending support to our extended family. We guarantee that you’ll gain a lot more than you’ll give!
