Letter

A blank white page, unsteady hands, and a whirlwind of bright ideas dancing inside our heads, you’d think that an imaginative character would have mastered the movement of creative flow; easily putting sentences and pictures together in a split of a second, but one thing we have learned as inventive souls is what comes from the heart will usually take its sweet time. We aim to fight originality when putting an issue together, bringing something new to the table has always been The Talk’s number one priority. From brave, bold beauty tips, to hunting down courageous local artists such as Amira Behbehani, and from manga chairs installations inspired by Japanese anime to an eco-friendly house being built around a living tree in the middle of the forest, enjoy flipping through our worded canvas that we have intact just for you.

The goal here is to scour the globe and offer up-and-coming and un- known brands to truly secure that you are unique in what you wear. The highlight on the website is not on brands but to shift the publics opinion from name to substance - the focus is on the pieces and how they are styled and the purpose of that is to inspire the client to move beyond labels.

WOLFF Apparel offers pieces from a wide range of prices from 26EUR for a skirt to 400EUR for a leather bag - the point here is to offer someone for everyone and to create a true and true mid-range boutique.

BANANA LEAF PRINTThe key print of this collection is a Banana leaf against a white backdrop. The prints are inspired by the Palermo Botanical Garden. The Banana tree, already featured in the decadent Arabian gardens, used to be a recurring presence in the courtyards of Palermo historical city centre and the opulent Patrician Villas of the city famous for its mix of art, modernity, myth and tradition.

The print is available on various materials: Chiffon, Silk Brocade, Popeline, Cady, Charmeuse, Satin Organza, Georgette stretch, Silk Twill.

MAIOLICAThe Central theme of this collection is the Maiolica print inspired by the Mediterranean hand painted ceramics and in particular the Caltagirone ceramics, excellence of the Sicilian tradition.

The colours of the prints bring the memory back to the Mediterrano and are reinterpreted through colourful brush strokes, sketched flowers and leaves against white backdrops that remind of porcelain.

The print is available on various materials: Chiffon, Brocade, Popeline, Charmeuse, Satin Organza, Twill.

Piaget PossessionTurn and the world is yours

A simple gesture makes the magic happen. Turn, caress, light a spark… And the world is yours! More than a piece

of jewellery, Possession is an intimate companion for today’s woman, firmly rooted in her times and supremely confident in her choices. It is to her that Piaget dedicates an evocative and addictive jewellery ritual. A collection

of iconic rings, earrings and pendant necklaces, enriched this year with bangle bracelets – to be worn alone or in

generous combinations. Turn and the world is yours!

Fashion - Trend

Page 37: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 35

She revels in Possession! A free-spirited urbanite who accepts no curbs on her liberty, she loves exploring new territories, views life in CinemaScope and flaunts a resolutely bold attitude. Endowed with a many-sided personality, strong yet touchingly vulnerable, she is open to the world at large. Her singular nature makes her comfortable with every facet of her personality and she consistently avoids complying with expectations. From Paris to New York, from Moscow to Seoul and from London to Milan, she strides her way through the world’s capitals while losing nothing of her natural charm and femininity. In a heartbeat, she steps out of the power game to enjoy a delicious meal with friends or playtime with her kids. A city beauty who celebrates her own personal style, she regularly swaps her elegant business suit for a boho chic look, her cocktail dress for a cosy tracksuit, her stilettoes for fur loafers. Her distinguishing feature? She revels in Possession!

“Turn and the world is yours”... making dreams come trueThere is something magical about this signature statement of the Possession collection advertising campaign. Suggesting a conscious or unconscious gesture. A freely chosen and evocative

jewellery ritual that soon proves addictive. An open invitation to turn the wheel of destiny offering a boundless realm of possibilities, Possession has a unique power, that of sparking good vibes. Turning the ring with a simple gesture, however discreet, and captivating the world. Turning the ring, making time stand still and allowing memories to dance through the mind. Caressing it and feeling positive energy flowing through us. Turning again and making dreams come true. More than a piece of jewellery, Possession is an epicurean aspiration, an ideal of emancipation, a self-assured sense of ambition, a smiling nod to life… The unwavering ally of a woman firmly rooted in the reality of her times.

The world is hers“When I’m wearing the Possession ring, whether I’m working or daydreaming, I usually find myself turning it and it makes me feel like I am the master of my own dreams” comments Jessica Chastain, international ambassador of the Maison Piaget. Who better than this undeniably talented and highly successful actress who makes light of conventions – this beautiful, accessible and committed young woman – to embody the vibrant singularity of this collection?

Cult ringInterpreting the concept of the mobile ring, a range of rings, earrings, pendants or bracelets establish themselves as highly desirable icons that sweep us in to an enchanting world of endless movement. Sublime companions to be slipped onto the finger, two pink gold rings epitomise Piaget’s creative daring and excellence. The first opts for an understated duo between pink gold and a brilliant-cut solitaire diamond. The second more opulently gemset model combines a ring set with a row of diamonds with a second featuring the original central diamond.

Wrist ritualThe rings are now echoed in the new collection of Possession bracelets, with each of their two ends featuring the iconic turning ring. Piaget is thereby initiating new rituals in terms of both wear and touch. A flexible pink or white gold bangle bracelet with its two delicately rounded rings beg for a touch that is at once plural and singular, free and inspired, sensual and soothing. A precious bangle to slide on and wear either alone or with several others to adorn the wrist and work the current trend. Rings on top or below? Swapping them round? To each woman her own ritual. Turn, caress, spark… and the world is yours!

Drive de CartierFor connoisseurs

Instinct, independence, elegance, these are the qualities of the Drive man; an attitude and a mindset that are not just about existing, but about knowing how to live.

This is a man who cannot be categorised, who seems natural on first impressions, but is more sophisticated than he initially appears. His true talent is an aptitude for style and freedom.

He appreciates the good things in life for himself and the pleasure they bring him.

His watch is worn as a reflection of the man, rather than for status, the same applies to his passions which he steers, as he would his car, appreciating the beauty of the skills involved.

People say he’s a connoisseur, sensitive to the precision of a fold, an exact shade of patina or a meticulously turned cuff or lapel. These are the details that make the difference for him.

Was it the balance between the dimensions of the case and the taut linear design that initially caught his eye in the Drive de Cartier watch?Certainly the mark of this stylish timepiece’s character is cultivated in its cushion-shaped case. The Drive de Cartier watch is the watch of a man of passion and continues the long standing tradition of Cartier watches with distinctive shapes.

Offering a full-immersion experience with deep blue dials, reminiscent of the ocean’s most secret places, set off by gleaming stainless steel, they are coolly modern masterpieces of passionate seduction and fluid elegance.

In the 21st century, watches carrying the EBEL signature are meeting the exhilarating challenges of the new millennium with the tranquil assurance of creations that are built to endure, and a legitimate pride in representing the epitome of good taste.

Unmistakably EBELThe iconic Wave line dates back to 1977 when the launch of the original Wave bracelet and fully integrated case introduced a design with which EBEL has become definitively associated. This incomparable EBEL spirit speaks directly to the heart in a language suffused with luxury, elegance, suppleness and sensuality.

Displaying all of the boldly reimagined, flowing design elements of the 21st century Wave, the new EBEL Wave hits the blue note in a perfect blend of beauty and function.

Uncompromising comfort and a fresh, modern dynamism result in a pair of timepieces that are eminently desirable and unmistakably EBEL.

Ebel Waves Of True BlueEbel explores the endless blue

Catching the perfect blue His ‘n’ Hers WaveMasterfully embodying the brand’s core values, this seductive duo is graced with fascinating blue depths offset by gleaming stainless steel cases. The 40 mm EBEL Wave is a symphony of elegant simplicity with hours, minutes and seconds hands, EBEL symbol, ten hour indexes and a date window at 3 o’clock. A luxurious black calf leather strap provides an uncompromisingly silky smooth feel and comfortable finish that is a cornerstone of EBEL’s reputation and signature designs, and of the Wave line in particular.

With eight of the finest diamonds glittering from its luxuriously cerulean depths, the smaller 30 mm interpretation glides smoothly into the legendary trademark EBEL wave bracelet with its distinctive brushed and polished stainless steel links, creating an incomparably subtle finish to a perfect…Wave. The hours, minutes and seconds hands sail smoothly and reliably across the shimmering ’ocean” of the dial.

And to ensure they go with the flow of those eager to explore the endless blue, the EBEL Wave Blue Lady and Gent are water-resistant to 50 meters.

Oris has announced one of the most innovative, technically advanced watches in the company’s history – the Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme. It is made using an Oris-patented manufacturing technique never before seen in watchmaking.

The watch’s case is made of carbon fibre and titanium, but not just any carbon fibre. Oris has developed and patented a carbon fibre manufacturing technique derived from processes used by Oris’s long-standing Formula 1 partner Williams and never before seen in watchmaking.

Oris’s technique has been designed to exploit the full potential of carbon fibre, and it delivers three key benefits. The first two are rigidity and water-tightness. In most carbon fibre watches, these can only be achieved by adding in extra components such as metal reinforcements or a metal ‘containers’, but Oris’s solution bypasses the need for these. The third is in post-production. Processing carbon fibre after it has been moulded and hardened is labour-intensive and costly, but the Oris technique overcomes this.

To make this unique, high-performance carbon fibre composite, sheets of woven carbon fibre reinforced polymer are layered manually in individual moulds in two

Oris Williams Chronograph

Carbon Fibre Extreme

steps and then twice hardened under five bar of pressure at 130°C in special ovens. The use of fibre waves rather than shreds ensures the material is solid, with no hollow spaces. Each watch-case middle part is individually made by hand.

Oris has developed this material using knowledge shared with the Williams Formula 1 team, with whom it first partnered in 2003. Carbon fibre polymers are used wherever a high strength-to-weight ratio is required, as in a racing car’s monocoque or steering wheel. It is five times lighter and twice as stable as stainless steel. Oris has used it in the middle part of the Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme multi-piece case. The part weighs just 7.2 grams.

2016, the year proclaimed by Roger Dubuis as the Year of the Diva, sees the introduction of five gorgeous Velvet lines from the Manufacture, all vividly confirming its stature as the Jeweller of rare artistic masterpieces. The multiple aspects of this claim are embodied with particular strength in the World Premiere Black Velvet trilogy.

Ever since its creation under the impetus of its founder Mr Roger Dubuis, the Maison has steadily built its global reputation as a ‘convicted serial innovator’. Its dynamic R&D-driven approach to watchmaking – involving substantial investments backed by a dedicated in-house department and its own full-fledged Manufacture – enables it to give free rein to apparently boundless creativity.

This unwavering loyalty to the creed of constant innovation is expressed through a resolutely cutting-edge attitude that enables it to roll out world-first, headline-making releases with each new edition of the SIHH.

Roger Dubuis has thereby acquired a worldwide reputation as an avant-garde Maison perpetually on the look-out for original technical developments and unusual aesthetic options – as well as unexpected combinations of the two, including through pioneering associations between materials often considered to be polar opposites.

These complementary facets of its expertise – already allied to spectacular

effect in the unprecedented “soft stones in the sky” patented gemsetting on rubber unveiled at the SIHH 2015 – now find stunning new World Premiere expression in the newly released Black Velvet trilogy.

Uncompromising femininity

The Black Velvet woman is driven by an all-conquering spirit. The uncompromising standards of this liberated lady are conveyed through a deliberately unconventional approach to life and living. Her resolutely rebellious attitude means she may at times be regarded as extreme, but always as infinitely intriguing.

Each of the models composing the trilogy features the groundbreaking use of gemset carbon, which called for a newly evolved and duly patented technique. Given that diamonds are a crystalline form of carbon, this could in fact be seen as the association between two different gems.

These models contribute to altering the masculine perception of carbon, which is transformed here in a manner that propels it firmly into an unmistakable feminine mode. In terms of wearer comfort, this high-tech material ten times lighter than gold ensures an inimitably airy and pleasing feel on the wrist, while the multi-layered technique creates a mottled, wave-life effect that gives each watch a truly unique appearance.

50 Shades of red

You can’t really choose one, you feel like a kid in a candy store trying to pick her favorite candy when in reality

every single candy in that store is her absolute favorite! That habit tends to stick with you as you grow up. A few years later you’re that girl in a candy store again except

you’re surrounded by your favorite lipstick colors and having trouble picking one all over again. Luckily, we’ve been keeping up with what’s trending this season and the one color you should be committed to is RED! Here

are our top 4 favorite shades and brands.

Page 59: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 57

MAC Cosmetics – Ruby Woo One of our personal favorite colors, Ruby Woo is definitely a vividly luscious shade of red that you’d want to go for if you’re looking to brighten your facial features. It is a heavy matte lipstick that will stick throughout the whole day, the only downside is that it leaves your lips chapped so make sure to exfoliate and moisturize your lips before applying ruby woo.

NARS – Jungle Red A flawless blend of conditioners and antioxidants to hydrate, nourish and protect your lips, this lipstick isn’t only the ultimate go-to shade for this season, the texture is smooth, intense, and not as drying matte as compared to an all matte lipstick.

Tom Ford – Chery Lush Red with pink undertones, this semi matte lipstick includes soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil, making it an ultra-creamy texture with an incredibly smooth application.

MAC Cosmetics – Diva Whoever told you dark lipsticks are made to be worn only in the cold season isn’t much of a risk taker. Another one of our personal favorites is Diva, a matte lipstick with a dark shade of red, although you’ll have to exfoliate and moisturize your lips before applying Diva as well because of the intensity of it’s matte texture, it is definitely worth it.

Beauty - Tips

Something pink, something purple

Something blue, something new

In honor of all the mermaids, the grunge-lovers, and the brave hearts out there, this beauty trend is certainly

not for the frail ones. Changing your lipstick color that you’ve been used to is one thing, but changing your

entire hair color takes a leap of self-reliance. If you’re one of the risk-takers that is willing to try this trend, we salute you and we will most definitely help you out. Here

are a few of our suggested steps to help you get the perfect shade of your desired pastel hair color.

Page 61: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 59

Learn the basics:If you have tried dying your hair at home, you’ll probably know that jumping to a pastel hair color when your hair is brown or black isn’t the best idea, the end result will never turn out the way you expect it to. If you have dark hair, you’ll need to bleach your hair first. Bleaching is a very complex process and best left to the professionals. I sincerely do not suggest you try this at home.

Investing in the right products: This is an important step, capitalizing on good hair products will not only give you seamless end results but it will also help preserve your healthy hair after dying it. L’Oreal recently released a line of products rotating around this new trend which is the Pastel Toning Conditioner. This beauty product works in 15 minutes and leaves your hair silky-soft and will last you up to 3-5 washes and contains multiple applications. The Pastel Toning Conditioners are specially designed for bleached, highlighted or blonde-colored hair.

Choosing the color:Any color can be turned into a pastel shade, but before you decide which color you want to go for keep in mind that some pastel colors such as pink, peach, or anything close to these shades are very hard to maintain, meaning the color could easily fade away. Fortunately, ‘Bleach London’ has the perfect cure in the form of their Rosé shampoo and conditioner variety. This range helps preserve your pink color with every wash, and can help expel any undesirable green patches in blonde hair as well.

Vita Coco, one of the fastest-growing beverage brands and the best-selling coconut water brand globally, has launched its natural coconut water in Kuwait for the first time after their recent success in the UAE.

Originally introduced in the US in 2004, the Vita Coco brand is currently available in over 30 countries including the UK, France, Germany, the USA, Japan and is now readily available in the UAE and Qatar. Vita Coco Coconut Water can be found in leading retailers such as The Sultan Center, Saveco, Lulu, Dean and Deluca, Trolley and many office sites, sports outlets and other leading independents.

The Vita Coco brand has experienced strong international growth since 2010, when it entered the UK, the brand’s first overseas market. Interestingly, Vita Coco’s sales in London recently surpassed the brand’s sales in New York

City, which had long been Vita Coco’s largest metropolitan market. Vita Coco also launched in the UAE in 2014 and it is now one of their biggest markets and has resulted in an ever-increasing consumer demand across the GCC region amongst expats and locals alike. Vita Coco Natural Coconut Water is based on one single ingredient: fresh coconut water. The coconut water used in Vita Coco Natural Coconut Water comes from young green coconuts and is full of naturally occurring potassium and essential electrolytes. With no colourings, preservatives or flavourings and never produced from concentrate, some say it’s just like sticking a straw in a coconut!

Vita Coco Coconut Water’s CEO – EMEA Giles Brook commented: “We expect Kuwait to be a strong market for the Vita Coco brand as promoting the health and well-being for individuals is top of the agenda for The Kuwait National Programme for Healthy Living.

Page 66: The talk #84 june 2016

Coconut water is currently one of the fastest growing drinks in the non-alcoholic beverage category across the globe and Vita Coco Coconut Water is leading global growth in the market and continues to do so as more people look for healthy beverage alternatives in their day-to-day lives.”

Vita Coco Coconut Water is available in three re-sealable pack sizes: 330ml for on the go; 500ml, the ideal pack size for sports and 1 litre for take home consumption. Providing a thirst quenching natural alternative to carbonated soft drinks, smoothies, juices and sports drinks, Vita Coco has become the drink of choice for many celebrities, athletes, fashionistas, fitness gurus and beauty experts across the globe.

As well as the 100% natural coconut water, the range in Kuwait will also include three great tasting, fruit flavours

(produced by combining the 100% natural coconut water with fruit puree, keeping the natural offering):

Health - Tips

The closer Ramadan gets the hotter the weather seems to be getting, and our

only source to defeat this heat and stay hydrated is by drinking refreshing cold

water or stuff ourselves with food to make the rumbling in our tummy go away, but in Ramadan, that’s not the case given the

obvious fact that we will be fasting so, here are a few tips on how to stay hydrated and

energized during fasting hours

Keeping yourself hydrated during fasting season

Page 69: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 67

• Stay away from food that will dehydrate you such as oily and salty foods.

• Drink at least eight glasses of water throughout the day after breaking your fast rather than chugging a lot in one take.

• Do not break your fast with juice, the sugars will keep you thirsty and add on unnecessary weight.

• Choose foods with high water content.

• Stay away from the heat and humidity to prevent sweating which will eventually dehydrate your body.

• Give yourself a cold bath to prevent obvious dehydrations such as cracked lips, flushed skin, fatigue, and increased body temperature.

• Eat almonds and dates instead of extremely sweet desserts.

• Eating in moderation helps to ensure adequate nutrition while avoiding indigestion, and lethargy.

Amira BehbehaniArtist and curator

The art world, more than any other, likes to pigeon-hole its people. There is art, and

there are countless divisions within it – each referencing everything from style and medium through to gender and even ethnicity. It can be useful for us as observers, but can be equally

frustrating for those artists who have no wish to be labeled and fight for the right to be free to simply create. Amira Behbehani is one such.

You recently won an award at Arab Woman of the Year for your work in the arts. How do you see that in your career growth and in parallel with the growth of the arts in Kuwait?Concerning my growth, it’s like I’m still asleep. I’m not finished yet. I don’t feel the award’s presence until someone reminds me that I won it. I ask myself “why me”? I didn’t plan it. I don’t run after fame. I just feel I do what I should do as a human first and as an artist secondly. I think that’s just how I am in life. Whether I’m with family or friends, I just enjoy the opportunity to be there and to give, to help, just to be there.

This is what led you to bring Peace One Day to Kuwait?Exactly. When I saw what they were doing around the world I was sure it would be good here. It took a year, but was worth it when it happened for the first time in 2012. We did it for four years and then, because it feel in to the summer season, it became too problematic to coordinate. Here, even the artists are not able to give of their best during summer. As well as this, I feel that the global Peace One Day initiative started to focus on and prioritize other areas. But during those four years we achieved a lot – I proved something to myself and the community proved something to itself.

After Peace One Day what was the next exhibition you curated?I put on the exhibition ‘Line’. Curating shows has long been part of my life, going back to 2003 at Karizma. For Line, the same as with every show, it all starts with a concept. I had this in mind for the previous four or five years. When I started drawing and painting, it was all about the line. I focused on architecture before I moved to figurative art. The line, in life, is so important. Even as children we’re always told ‘not to cross the line’. It means many things. Whenever I look at something, I always see the line.

Page 77: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 75

How did the concept develop?A couple of years I suggested to an architect, let’s work on doing a show together that has at its heart the line. She liked the idea, but as things went we just didn’t find the time to pick up on it again. And then last December, I was in talks for a solo show next year – it was to be my first show since 2008. Sadly, things didn’t work out, and it bothered me that another year would pass. It’s interesting how things turn around though. An element of line – but their own interpretation.

All this came out of the misfortune of your solo show not working out?In a way. But whilst all this was going on, I received a wonderful offer from CAP to have a solo show in Kuwait later this year. I don’t want to say too much about the concept for now – but it will open on 9th November.

We’ll look forward to your show with great anticipation. One thing we know about you is that your style constantly evolves.

It does. I love experimentation and I feel that I am a new artist in the making every single day. I’m constantly inspired by art that I see. I’m constantly researching and experimenting with new techniques. Even my friends tell me that whenever they come and see me working on something, when they come back it has changed to something completely unexpected. I look around and I see artists here who are stuck in a rut, sticking to one style – I simply don’t want to be seen like that.

“ I love experimentation and I feel that I am a new artist in the making every single day”

Page 78: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 76

Throughout your career as an artist, the art scene in Kuwait has changed markedly. It’s far larger; it’s far more open. There are now real possibilities for young artists in Kuwait. To us, you’ve played a role in reshaping the arts here. How do you view your growth and your role?At the beginning, I was going to shows as an observer. Still, in truth, I see myself as an observer. Then one day an idea popped in to my head. But at no time did I consciously decide that ‘this is the right time’. When the time is right everything falls in to place on its own. If you have the right elements of artist and venue – you’re set. I hope what I have done is to at least show others that art has a purpose other than purely decoration. Today, whether because of me or not – but certainly because of many others – art has contributed so much to, and become a part of, society.

But artists here, as a whole, are overlooked in favour of artists from across the region. For some time Iranian artists have been in the spotlight – deservedly so – but it’s meant that we in Kuwait have been passed over. The market follows trends – and Kuwaiti art has not been the trend for too long now. I’m not like that myself. If I like something, I like it for what it is. But too many people need to feel the comfort of following others.

Amira Behbehani. Firstly a human. Secondly an artist. Without a hint of ego (throughout the years we’ve known her she has always resisted the temptation to call herself an artist – insisting this is a title that can only be given to her by others), throughout her career Amira has used art – be it her own art of the art of others – to produce a change in society. She’s achieved this is a measured style. Uncontroversially, and always with the support of her artists and her community. ??

Described as an artist, photographer, film director and dream merchant, Jean-Paul Goude is in fact an “artisan”, as he likes to describe himself, who’s constantly seeking out quality and for whom meticulous attention to detail becomes culture and style. The ways in which he has always depicted his muses over the years and worked on fantasies with original techniques has enabled his creations to become works of art and emblems of an entire epoch. The images on display at Milan’s Padiglione di Arte Contemporanea illustrate his talent and the unique vision that models the physicality of the women who inspire him (Grace

Jones and Farida Khelfa above all), turning his advertising campaigns into benchmarks of style whatever the product or event they are promoting. The potency of Goude’s language and the force of his imagination transport us into a magical dimension, with a sense of mystery that leaves its mark and is at the same time the most effective visual metaphor of the modern era.

The strong focus on detail and insistence on the highest quality that define Goude’s work present a striking analogy with the philosophy of Tod’s, which has always had such values in its DNA. Tod’s Group thus continues to promote projects in support of art and culture in general, and to work with PAC’s art programme, which organizes events of great interest and prestige throughout Italy.

Kuwait will be witnessing a very distinctive event during Ramadan this year as Red Bull Art of Can Exhibition will

be on display on 15th June until 25th June. The exhibition, which is set to receive visitors starting 16th and VIPS on

the 15th, will feature a variety of art pieces that depict the talent and craftsmanship of the participants, along with

their skill in creating a piece of art where the Red Bull can is the only point of inspiration.

THE ART OF CAN CREATIVITY BEYOND BOUNDARIES

Page 87: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 85

The Red Bull Art of Can offers a platform for anyone, regardless of age, who wants to explore his or her creative talent. Artists, students, grandparents and all those in between were invited to submit their works of art. The Red Bull Art of Can is a true expression of one’s imagination, with little or no restrictions placed on the budding artist.

Great prizes for the winnersThe project will culminate in a premium art exhibition, where the selected pieces will be displayed and the top three pieces awarded prizes. The judges will select the winners who will be announced

on the opening night of the exhibition with chances to win cash prizes, categorized in the physical category, the 1st place prize is 1,000 KD, the 2nd place prize 750 KD and 3rd place prize is 500 KD. As for the displayed digital category, the 1st place is 1,000 KD.The organizers will shortlist the entrants qualified to participate in “The Art of Can” exhibition based on creativity, theme and final presentation.

Introducing the Digital Category for the First Time in KuwaitThis year, a new category will be featured; in addition to the physical

art, the digital displayed art was introduced to the competition for the first time. The physical piece of art should include the actual Red Bull can as the primary material in the final work. However, the digital displayed art is a work of art that can be displayed on a screen and should include a digital version of the Red Bull can in the final piece. Submissions could take the form of an animation, a digital short film, stop motion, or GIF.

The primary material/inspiration must be a Red Bull can, but plenty of imagination and creativity is necessary too. Be it a sculpture, a

picture, a 3D model, a mobile, digital illustration or a piece of modern art, as long as it is beautiful, colorful, clever and amusing.

A bit of historyThe art of creating masterpieces out of Red Bull cans started back in 1999. Exhibitions have been held all around the globe from Europe to New Zealand. Countries like Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Singapore, USA, UAE, Kuwait and many more. This year, Red Bull Art of Can will be taking place in Kuwait only.

A Tree In A House’ is a project created by Aibek Almasov, a 24 year old architect, through his company ‘A.Masow Designs’ and ‘A.Masow Design Studio’. Two years ago Aibrek developed ‘A Tree in A House’ design, a harmless project that portrays his respect for nature and is created to avoid any destruction that might be impacting the forest. He presented this idea by building a tubular glass around a tree rather than chopping a tree off to make space for poisoned contraction space, and the result was stunning.

MINDSCAPES LONGCHAMP Decorates Its Parisian Townhouse With

Ryan Mcginness!

The famous Parisian luxury goods brand, Longchamp, has just begun renovations of its historic store on rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, the brand’s hometown. For Longchamp, it’s the perfect opportunity to bring art into the heart of Paris, with an exceptional storefront decorated with a spectacular work of art, « Mindscapes », by American artist Ryan McGinness! Located on the corner of two very busy streets just a few dozen meters from the Place de la Concorde.

Jean Cassegrain, Longchamp CEO and the founder’s grandson, clarifies: “Renovations of this magnitude in such a conspicuous location need something spectacular that go beyond a simple tarp. Our brand is all about the unexpected,

and this completely unconventional and innovative project is a perfect example. I met Ryan ten years ago in New York and I’ve been following his work ever since. When we decided to do a unique building tarp, we immediately thought of Ryan. His work has an energy to it that is in harmony with this prestigious corner location.”

Cassegrain explains: “This decoration in the heart of Paris is a very important step for us. Ryan is from New York and we’re from Paris, two cities overflowing with energy and creativity! As symbolized by the horse and rider galloping in our logo, our brand is in perpetual movement. These words can also be used to describe Ryan’s work and the piece he has created for this site.”

Page 106: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 104

Ryan McGinness adds: “In autumn 2015, I received an invitation from Jean Cassegrain, whom I have known for years, to ‘wrap’ the brand’s Paris flagship store on Rue Saint-Honoré while extensive renovations take place. The artwork will cover two faces of the corner building and extend from pavement level up to the roof. I began by developing preliminary sketches and thumbnails, which allow me to then consider options for the solution to the artistic challenge. We decided to go with ‘fragmenting the façade’ into ‘windows’ of brightly colored paintings with strong black borders. I selected striking and colorful images

that I want to feel personal to passers-by. I have used details from a variety of my paintings, many of which refer to dreamlike images. I use fluorescents, pearlescent, varying textures and finishes in order to intensify their impact.”

The Museum of Modern Art of New York (MoMA) wrote about Ryan’s work in 2007: “Plant life, logos and symbols, fairy tales and everyday scenes, family crests and coats of arms are a few of the disparate subjects that McGinness fragments, alters and layers to build his dense networks of brightly colored fantastical imagery.”

Let’s talk about babies. The goods, the toots and the minions

Everyone tells you how incredible moms feel the minute they lay their eyes on their babies, but

nobody tells you what happens 10 minutes, a week or 6 months later. In my page, I will tap into mothers’

constant anxieties and fears of uncertainties that come with being a mom as well as some crucial inside

truths that a lot of women feel but are reluctant to talk about. Let me have the pleasure of chatting you

through it and put it to rest!

Life Style - Feature

Page 111: The talk #84 june 2016

the talk - page 109

Am I ready to be a mom?A question each and every mother asked or wondered at some point in her life. Of course, that’s before she actually became one and realized, she wasn’t.

Motherhood is something you can never prepare yourself for, no matter how many parenting books you’ve read, or how many years you’ve waited to fully give it time and effort. It is a challenge that takes courage and persistence. It is the longest, most demanding journey of your life. A journey that is paved with unexpected challenges in every single corner that will constantly make you feel doubtful of yourself and will make you question your abilities as a caregiver. You weren’t ready for that kind of self-doubt were you?

You were also not ready for the amount of love and fulfillment you will be feeling while holding a helpless blob of tears and saliva that you will one day; grow into a walking talking human being.

So say hello to milk spit-ups, diaper changes, sleepless nights, caffeine overdose and one-sided conversations. This may sound so boring to you now if you haven’t yet joined the mommy clan but let me tell you this, it is the most rewarding job you’ll ever have.

True happiness will have new dimensions in your life, as it will lie in

your infants’ burps andbowl movements

I haven’t yet seen my baby read a sentence or write an essay but I’ve seen him potty, stand un-aided, walk and run and I cannot describe how proud I’ve felt watching him hit these milestones. Just imagine how much more rewarding it’ll feel watching him blossom and graduate school, university and higher education.

When you see your child become a successful and a respected member of society, you’ll appreciate each and every day you’ve spent teaching him the ABC’s, force-feeding him his fruits and veggies and building his self-esteem. When that day comes, you will realize that you were never really ready to be a mom but you were built to do it! The way I see it, women are just as essential to humanity as water to life. They not only create life inside their bodies, but also nurture and raise men and women. So stop thinking twice, stop weighing out the pros and cons of parenthood. Just visit your 3 dream destinations, have as many dinner dates with your spouse as you possibly can and scratch out at least two things off your bucket list. Then just do it.

Go ahead and raise generations. If you’ve already done so, then maybe now is a good time you take a vacation!

The expected star of the show at Bonhams Aston Martin auction was a 1953 Aston Martin DB3S, raced by Sir Stirling Moss, Tony Brooks, Peter Collins, Roy Salvadori and Reg Parnell. With an estimate of £6-7 million, the ex-works race car attracted the attention of classic car collectors across the globe.

“Few cars that have appeared in film can also boast an association with so many great names from the heyday of British sports car racing, but this Aston Martin DB3S does just that,” said Tim Schofield, Bonhams UK Head Motoring. “Drivers who raced it include such legends as Peter Collins, Roy Salvadori, and Sir Stirling Moss, competing at world-class level in such gruelling races as the Mille Miglia, the Spa Grand Prix and the Nürburgring 1,000kms.”

Since specialist auctioneer Bonhams first held an Aston Martin sale in 2000, the auction has become one of the highlights of the automotive calendar. As in previous years, Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell will host the auction.

Aston Martin Works is the historic home of the iconic sports car maker, a unique facility with a remarkable automotive heritage. An approved heritage service and restoration facility as well as a new car dealership it is possible to view, purchase,

service and restore cars from every era of the marque’s 103-years.Aston Martin President and CEO Dr. Andy Palmer said: “We are very proud of our heritage at Aston Martin so it is fascinating to hear about the histories of the cars that come up for sale at these auctions. Some of our cars have led extremely interesting lives.”

When passion for motor racing is the driving force and intense open-air pleasure the goal, the new MINI John Cooper Works Convertible takes the ideal line from the word go. The second John Cooper Works model of the latest generation combines engine and suspension technology optimised for use on the race track with distinctive design and equipment features as well as the extensively refined qualities of the new MINI Convertible. This lends even greater fascination to the vehicle concept of an open-top 4-seater with outstandingly sporty performance properties that is still unique in the small car segment.

With its spontaneous power delivery and highly emotional sound, the most powerful engine in the British brand’s portfolio with 170 kW/231 hp is strikingly impressive. The fully electrically operated textile top is particularly low-noise, open or closing in just 18 seconds at the press of a button. The stretched silhouette and the powerfully modelled surfaces of the open-top 4-seater are supplemented with design elements developed especially for the John Cooper Works model to optimise cooling air intake and aerodynamic properties. The suspension technology set-up based on well-established racing expertise along with convertible-specific bracing elements guarantees excellent agility and precisely controlled handling in dynamic driving situations. Noticeable progress is also reflected in the new MINI John Cooper Works Convertible as compared to its predecessor model in terms of acceleration figures, space and the premium characteristics of the interior, where the rollover bars that extend automatically if needed are now fully integrated behind the rear seats.

The power that now ensures a truly unique racing feel when driving with the top open is drawn from a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine developed on the basis

of the latest engine generation with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology, with a peak output exceeding that of the predecessor model by 15 kW/20 hp. There is also an increase in the lead over the new MINI Cooper S Convertible. The additional output of the top athlete bearing the John Cooper Works logo is now 29 kW/39 hp. The new engine also generates a maximum torque of 320 Newton metres and accelerates the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible with standard 6-speed manual transmission in 6.6 seconds from standing to 100 km/h – 0.3 seconds less than the predecessor model. In conjunction with the new generation of the optional 6-speed Steptronic sport transmission, the same sprint takes just 6.5 seconds (minus 0.6 seconds).

The thrilling performance figures and also the handling properties of the new MINI John Cooper Works Convertible - which are always supremely under the driver’s control even when moving in extremely sporty style - result from a precisely configured overall package comprising not just the powerful engine but also a sports exhaust system, the sports suspension including 17-inch John Cooper Works light alloy wheels, a sports brake system developed in collaboration with specialist manufacturer Brembo, the John Cooper Works Aerodynamics Kit and the distinct cockpit design featuring John Cooper Works sport seats. The car’s performance properties, appearance and fascinating driving experience also give the open-top variant of the top athlete authentic characteristics that both reflect longstanding motor racing experience and the tradition-steeped association between MINI and John Cooper Works. To this day, the name of the legendary sports car designer John Cooper - who once paved the way for the classic Mini to take to the race track - stands for the intensive driving fun and successful motor racing achievements of the small British car.

Youth development has a high priority at Porsche. Since 1997, the Stuttgart-based car manufacturer has shaped talented youngsters into professional racing drivers. All 19 candidates who have received support as Porsche juniors in the company’s one-make race series have succeeded in joining the ranks of the professionals. Since 2015, interested young drivers have had the opportunity to apply for the youth development programme online at www.porsche.com/juniorprogramme. This year applications open on May 1.

Prospective candidates must be born between 01.01.1995 and 28.02.1999 and must prove their participation in a touring car and/or single-seater series. Moreover, they must not have contested a full season, and this year not have contested more than three races in a Porsche Carrera Cup, a Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge or in a higher level GT series.

Young drivers who are successful with the application procedures will participate in a two-stage selection process. After intensive fitness and endurance tests in an active driving component, finalists get the chance to demonstrate their driving skills at the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. The best candidate signs a contract as a Porsche Junior and will contest the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland.

The chosen juniors receive 150,000 Euros in funding and are given assistance similar to the Porsche factory pilots. Fitness tests, comprehensive media training and sponsor obligations prepare the junior pilots for a professional career. A junior coach is on hand as a mentor to the talented youngsters.

Internationally successful drivers such as Timo Bernhard, Marc Lieb, Patrick Long, Michael Christensen and Earl Bamber have all taken part in this challenging youth development programme and are now Porsche works drivers.
