The Teenie Weenies Give Up TheirEaster Egg (1920)

A certain little boy and girl lived with theiraunt. The aunt was rather cross and thelittle boy and girl had some very unpleasanttimes. They were quite poor and the childrenhad no toys. They never had good times likeother boys and girls, but they seldom

complained. There was one thing they had always wanted very much, and that was two coloredEaster eggs. They wished many times forthese, one for the little boy and one for thelittle girl. They very timidly asked their auntif they could each have an Easter egg andshe told them that eggs were entirely tooexpensive to use in such a fool way and thatthey would have to get along without them.

The little boy and girl were greatlydisappointed and that night they criedthemselves to sleep.

Some way the Teenie Weenies heard allabout the matter. Just how, it is hard to tell.Maybe a mouse spoke to the squirrel aboutit and the squirrel might have told Tillie

Titter the sparrow, and she must havetalked to the little folks about it. Well, anyhow, the Teenie Weenies heard that thelittle boy and girl wanted two colored eggsand the kind hearted little people set to

work at once to supply them.

Two eggs! exploded the old hen. Why,

It means that we will not be able to haveour regular Easter egg, if we give two to

these children, said the General. For theold hen wants twenty-five grains of corn foreach egg, and thats an awful price to pay.

We dont mind losing our egg, cried the Teenie Weenies, and so the General orderedfifty grains of corn to be counted out andtied into bags. Each bag held five grains of corn, which made a fair sized load for a

Teenie Weenie to carry, and throwing themon to their shoulders the little men set off

for the chicken yard where the old hen lived.Madam, said the General when the TeenieWeenies stood before the hen, we havebrought fifty grains of corn and we wouldlike to buy two eggs.

bless my pin feathers, I havent laid two eggson the same day for months. But, she said, eyeing the ten bags of corn greedily, Illmake a great effort and see what I can do.

Thank you, madam, said the General. When shall we return for the eggs?

Come back in two hours, cried the hen as

she jumped onto her nest. Two hours later the Teenie Weeniesreturned and found the two eggs awaitingthem. Loading the two eggs onto a sledge, the little folks dragged them to the house

where the little girl and boy lived. As it wasa wet, rainy day, the Teenie Weenies found adry, snug spot under the porch of the house

where they carried the eggs. Then they tookthem through a broken place in the window

and lowered them, with ropes, to the groundbelow. They were then placed on sticks andpainted in many wonderful colors.

When both eggs had been painted and whenthey were thoroughly dry the Teenie Weenies

carried them out and placed the eggs in avery pretty nest which they had made on the

    door step.

On Easter morning the little boy and girlfound the nest and they were two veryhappy children, but they were no happierthan the Teenie Weenies, for they, too, hadan egg.

When the Teenie Weenies looked out of the

shoe house window on Easter morning theyfound a fine big hens egg lying on theground in front of the house, and scratchedin the dirt were these words: HappyEaster!

The Teenie Weenies had not told the old henabout the two children, but somehow shehad found out that the little folks hadsacrificed their Easter egg to make the littleboy and girl happy. How she found this out

it would be hard to tell.Maybe the mouse told her, or perhaps thesquirrel told Tilly Titter and she told the oldhen, but somehow she found it out, andfeeling sorry for the generous little people,

she sneaked up very early Easter morningand laid them an egg.

The Little Folks Are Robbed Of AnEaster Egg (1921)

Well, Ive made arrangements for our Easter

egg, announced the General as he drew upa chair and sat down beside the Lady of Fashion, who was mending a pair of theDunces stockings.Did you get the egg from that old hen we

bought from last year? asked the Lady of Fashion. No, answered the General. She is tooexpensive and besides she is such a grouch.I hate to have dealings with grouches. Imade arrangements with that old yellow hen

who lives at the big house on the nextstreet. We will get the egg tomorrowmorning. What is the market price now for eggs?asked the Lady of Fashion.Well, theyre rather cheap now, said theGeneral. We only have to pay seven grainsof corn, but we have to go after the egg. Theold hen wont deliver it.

The old hen promised to lay the egg andhave it all ready at ten oclock the nextmorning but when the Teenie Weenies

arrived at the chicken yard they found thehen still sitting on her nest.Sorry I havent the egg ready, said the hen.

But Im rather worried this morning and itsalways hard or me to lay an egg when Im worried.Sorry youre worried, said the General, bowing beautifully. Is there anything we

can do for you?No answered the hen. Im worried aboutsomething you couldnt help me with at all.

There are signs of company for dinner at thebig house, and that always means chickenfor dinner and we always wonder who willbe the victim. I just simply cant keep from

worrying about it. The Teenie Weenies thoughtfully withdrew while the hen laid the egg, for it is quiteembarrassing to hens when folks standabout and watch. When the egg was ready for them the littlefolks rolled it out of the nest and paid thehen her seven grains of corn.

Gogo and the Turk made a clever rack out of several poles and some string, into whichthey rolled the egg.

Eight of the strongest Teenie Weeniescaught up the poles, and the little people setoff for home.

If you see an old rooster on your way home youd better keep out of his way, said theold hen. Hes a lazy old wretch thatsalways eatin eggs, and my advice would beto keep out of his way.

The Teenie Weenies hurried across the yardand they had just passed through a holeunder a picket fence when they suddenlycame face to face with a huge rooster.Where did you get that egg? asked therooster gruffly. We just bought it from a hen in that yard, answered the General, pointing through thefence.Well, clear out and drop that egg, Im

hungry, said the rooster, and he looked socross and ugly the Teenie Weenies skippedout of his way as he advanced towardsthem.

The rooster cracked the shell with his great

bill, and in a few minutes he had gobbled upthe egg and then he devoured the shell. Infact, there wasnt a thing left but a tiny wet

spot on the ground where the egg had been. The rooster was such a powerful fellow there wasnt a thing to be done so the Teenie

Weenies hurried back to the old hen, wherethey told her about the robbery. The wretch! exclaimed the old hen whenshe heard the story. Just like a rooster.Strut around and make themselves

important and then eat honest folks eggs.Well fix him. Ill come over to your houseearly in the morning and lay another egg for

you, and it wont cost you a single grain of corn.Cant you lay one now? asked the Dunce,

who wanted to be sure of the egg for Easter.Hardly, answered the hen haughtily Itsquite unusual to lay two eggs in a day, butIm most mad enough to lay one, and thehen glared at the rooster who came mincinginto the yard.

The hen kept her promise and appeared atthe shoe house early the next morning,

where she laid the Teenie Weenies abeautiful egg, and the little folks had a

    wonderful Easter dinner.

Tilly Titter Saves The Day (1922)

Eggs were most expensive. The high cost of living had even reached the Weenie villageunder the rose bush, and it looked asthough the little people would have aneggless Easter.

It wont seem a bit like Easter without anegg, said the Lady of Fashion as the littlefolks sat about the luncheon table one daydiscussing the matter.

Well, Ive visited every hen in the

neighborhood, and they ask such terriblehigh prices I dont see how we can afford anegg, said the General. Why, the lowestprice I could get was sixty grains of corn oreighty-five grains of wheat.

What! exclaimed Grandpa, looking terriblyshocked. sixty grains of corn! Land sakes! What in the name of jumping beans arethose hens talking about? Have they gonecrazy? I could get all the eggs I wanted whenI was a young fellow for five grains of cornapiece and the old hens would deliver them,

too; theyd come right over to the house andlay the eggs any place you wanted them. My

word, what are we comin to?

Have you tried Mother Bunch? asked theDoctor.

Yes, I have, answered the General. Butshes sittin on a nest of eggsexpects tohave a brood of young chickens next week.

Dont you think we could afford sixty grainsof corn? asked the Lady of Fashion, lookingsweetly at the General.

No, we cant, answered the General. TheCook and I have gone over the grain in thestore room, and we havent a grain morethan well need before we can get anothersupply.

The Teenie Weenies were all most mournfulover the outlook for an eggless Easter, andeven Tilly Titter, the English sparrow, noticed some thing was wrong when sheflew down in front of the shoe house thatafternoon.

A big fire was built, and when a great bed of hot ashes had been burned the Turk boreda hole in each of the eggs with a tiny drill.

That hole in the eggs is to let the steam out when theyre cooking, so they wont blowup, the Turk told the curious TeenieWeenies who gathered about him.

The tiny eggs were shoved into the fire andcovered with hot ashes, where they cookedfor some time, and when they were takenout and the shells removed they werecooked to a turn.

The Teenie Weenie women spread a bigtablecloth on a mossy hill near by, and withplenty of sandwiches, cocoa, and the eggsthe little folks had a wonderful picnic.

Tilly was not forgotten, for the Cook broughtover six loaves of Teenie Weenie bread, andthe grateful bird was so pleased she cried.

In the afternoon the Teenie Weenie menplayed ball, while the little ladies hunted

wild flowers and every one had a lovelyEaster.

Whats eatin all you folks? she asked asshe looked about at the disappointed TeenieWeenies. You all ave faces as long as aorse. Any one sick?

The General told the bird how they wereunable to have their usual egg for Easter, and the bird shocked every one by laughingat the top of her shrill voice.

Bless your little arts, laughed the bird. Illsee you get heggs for Easter and it wontcost you a shilling.

How, Till? How can you get them? askedthe little people.

Why, Ill lay em. Hits four days to Easterand Ill lay three of the freshest eggs youever tasted before that.

Tilly kept her word, and Easter morning the Teenie Weenie men removed three lovelyeggs from her nest and carried them to aquiet nook under some bushes where they

    were prepared for roasting.

    The Haunted Egg (1923)

Of course, the Teenie Weenies had madearrangements for an Easter egg. TheGeneral had ordered it days ago from an oldhen who lived near by. To make sure she

would not forget, for the old hen was terriblyforgetful, the General had tied a stringaround the middle toe of her left foot. Easter

was a great day for the little folksit wasthe one day they were allowed to eat their fillof egg. They usually cut a hole in the shell, and then the Cook would scoop out what heneeded to fill the orders. Some of the TeenieWeenies liked their egg fried, some poachedor baked and once in a long time they boiledit whole, but that was such a great task it

    was seldom done.

Do you know, General, said the Lady of

Fashion the day before Easter, I think it would be lovely to have a sort of picnicdinner tomorrow. We could have the eggbrought over to that big bush by the creek, and we could take out some bread and cakeand things

Plenty of cake! shouted the Dunce, who

was carving a gun for one of the twins out of a toothpick.

On Easter morning the Cowboy, theChinaman, Paddy Pinn, and the Dunce weresent after the egg while the rest of the

Teenie Weenies carried the baskets of food, cooking things, and dishes over to the bankof the creek. The men gathered dried sticksand the Cook soon built a great fire, whilethe rest of the little folks waited for the

arrival of the egg. They waited and waitedfor the longest time, but still no egg

Yes, lots of cake and a few cooking thingsso we could build a fire and cook the egg, continued the Lady of Fashion.

Im for it, cried the Clown. I am, too.And me. And me, chorused the rest of

the little people, that is, all but Grandpa, who grumbled something about the dampground.

Anyhow, it was decided to have the picnic, and the little women set to work at once

baking cakes, cookies, and other dainties forthe party.

appeared, and finally the General sent theIndian off down the creek in his pea podcanoe in search of the men who had beensent after it.

Presently loud shouts in the distanceannounced the coming of the egg, and soonthe little men came dragging it on a sledge.

Oh, what a lovely egg! cried the Lady of Fashion, as the little folks gathered aboutthe sledge. Lets boil it. It would be suchfun to boil it whole, right in its shell.

    Then the strangest thing happenedthe

Teenie Weenies almost stopped breathingand their eyes nearly popped out of theirheads, for out of the egg came a voiceafaint voice but plenty loud enough for all tohear: III dont want to be boiled.

LAWSY, gasped Miss Jackson, the colorednurse, who was holding the Guff baby in herarms. What dat?

    A HANTED EGG, gurgled Gogo.

There was a crackling of shell, and the nextinstant the Dunce, pale with fright, popped

his head out of the egg.

What in the name of sense does thismean? asked the astonished General.

Its a joke, General. Just a joke, answeredthe Cowboy, laughing so hard he couldscarcely talk, We found this empty egg shellon the way back and we thought it would be

fun to have you break open the shell andfind the Dunce inside.

Well, I wasnt gonna be boiled! shouted theDunce.

We put the Dunce inside the shell and thencemented it up, continued the Cowboy. The other egg is hidden back in the woodsand well get it now.

How the little people laughed! They laugheduntil their tiny sides were sore. The otheregg was soon brought up, and the Cook setto work cooking for the hungry TeenieWeenies. He cooked for nearly an hour andthe little people ate their fill of Easter egg,

stopping every now and then to laugh, whenever they thought of the frightenedDunce bursting out of the egg shell

Grandpa and the twins were walking in the woods one afternoon when they sat down torest, and immediately the twins began to make embarrassing inquiries concerning the

Easter rabbit. Does the Easter rabbit lay all the Easter eggs? asked Jerry. Does he laythem all colored? inquired Tom.

    15/18

Well, answered the old Gentleman, I ought to tell you something about the Easter rabbit.I worked for him one time. It was in the Spring of `51. Three or four of us were walkingthrough the woods one morning when we came across a sign askin for help with the Easterrush.

We were lookin for work, so we traipsed over to theEaster rabbits hole and asked for a job. Was he achocolate rabbit? asked Jerry. No, regular rabbit, said Grandpa. He told us to come early next day andbe sure to bring asbestos gloves. I thought that waskinda funny, but

    17/18

    We certainlyneeded those gloves.

That rabbit laidEaster eggs so fastthey came out of hishouse hotter than abaked potato. Everytime he laid an egghed kick it out of

the house with hishind foot. He suredid keep us busy, and the only rest wegot was when he got

a cramp in his legfrom kickin eggs.

There were a lot of mice and frogs workin, too, and our job was to grab the eggs as fast asthey were kicked out and roll them down to the colorin department. Jack Frost did thecolorin, you know, the fellow who colors the leaves in the Fall, and he sure is some artist. What happened to the eggs after they were colored? asked Tom. Well, answeredGrandpa, There were hundreds of frogs and mice waitin and as soon as an egg was

colored a mouse or a frog would start rollin it away. I suppose they rolled it off and poppedit into some childs Easter nest somewhere.
