A Note From The Executive & Artistic Director

Happy 40thAnniversary Season to Te Warehouse Teatre. It is a great pleasureto be at the helm of Te Warehouse Teatre during this exciting time. We haveaccomplished so much over the course of the last 40 years and there would be no wayfor me to thank everyone who has had a part in the rich community that we have built, but together we have created a theatre of which Greenville is proud.

Tis year we look back at all of our success but we also look forward to the next40 years, and I am happy to lay out the business model that will launch us into thefuture! Its a business model built for longevity, addresses all mission directives andwill provide the highest professional and artistic quality theatre possible. It has threeintegral parts that could stand on their own but together create a unique businessmodel for a small market professional theatre.

During our 2015-2016 season well kick off our new Warehouse Teatre Conservatory,a tuition based 40+ week program drawing from the most talented early careertheatre professionals from across the state and nation. It bridges the gap between theeducational and the professional world. oo many young theatre artists receive little tono training about the business of their discipline; we will fill that gap and prepare themfor their first professional move.

In fact, well provide their first professional move. Our touring program grows everyyear and will reach throughout South Carolina and the near reaches of North Carolinaand Georgia. Te tours not only further the reach of our educational programmingbut will also hire the graduates of our conservatory the season after they graduate. ell

your representatives: we are creating an educational program that provably leadsto tax paying jobs in the field, in the state!

If excellent professional preparation, networking while working with our guest artistson the Main Stage and then a job when they graduate are not carrots enough to ensurewe attract the best, brightest we have something else. In 1989 Te Warehouse Teatrebecame the first professional theatre in South Carolina when it entered into a SmallProfessional Teatre agreement with Actors Equity Association. Tis year we haveonce again entered into a Small Professional Teatre agreement with Actors EquityAssociation. Tis agreement helps us increase the professional and artistic quality ofwhat you see at Te Warehouse but it also, and almost more importantly, will allow usto offer to our Conservatory students measurable movement towards the professionalcredentials they wish to acquire.

Well still be doing all of the other programs that you have come to know and love,a vibrant summer season with Te Distracted Globe and our Upstate ShakespeareFestival; our exciting and impactful educational programming including Tis WoodenO, Te Healthy Living Program; our Community Engagement activities which includeour alk Backs, Pre-Show alks, and our Warehouse Teatre Forums and more.

Te Warehouse is your Intense Intimate and Unexpected alternative for theatre of thehighest quality! Tank you for being a part of our world and we hope youll be a bigpart of the next 40!

Tank you for coming to Te Teatre. Without you, wed be an empty room.

    Playwright Biography

William Shakespearewas born to John Shakespeare and mother Mary Arden sometime in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. Tere is no record of his birth, buthis baptism was recorded by the church, thus his birthday is assumed to be the 23 ofApril. His father was a prominent and prosperous alderman in the town of Stratford-

upon-Avon, and was later granted a coat of arms by the College of Heralds. All that isknown of Shakespeares youth is that he presumably attended the Stratford GrammarSchool, and did not proceed to Oxford or Cambridge. Te next record we have of himis his marriage to Anne Hathaway in 1582. Te next year she bore a daughter for him,Susanna, followed by the twins Judith and Hamnet two years later. His son, Hamnet, died at age eleven from unknown causes.

Seven years later Shakespeare is recognized as an actor, poet and playwright, when arival playwright, Robert Greene, refers to him as an upstart crow inA Groatsworthof Wit. A few years later he joined up with one of the most successful acting troupes in

London: Te Lord Chamberlains Men. When, in 1599, the troupe lost the lease of thetheatre where they performed, (appropriately called Te Teatre) they were wealthyenough to build their own theatre across the Tames, south of London, which theycalled Te Globe. Te new theatre opened in July of 1599, built from the timbersof Te Teatre, with the motto otus mundus agit histrionem (A whole world ofplayers). When James I came to the throne (1603) the troupe was designated by thenew king as the Kings Men (or Kings Company). Te Letters Patent of the companyspecifically charged Shakespeare and eight others freely to use and exercise the artand faculty of playing Comedies, ragedies, Histories, Interludes, Morals, Pastorals,

stage plays ... as well for recreation of our loving subjects as for our solace andpleasure. During his lifetime Shakespeare wrote a total of seventeen comedies, tenhistories and ten tragedies. He also wrotefive long narrative poems and one hundredand fifty-four shorter poems known as TeSonnets.

Shakespeare entertained the king and thepeople for another ten years until June 19,1613, when a canon fired from the roof of

the theatre for a gala performance ofHenryVIIIset fire to the thatch roof and burned thetheatre to the ground. Te audience ignoredthe smoke from the roof at first, being tooabsorbed in the play, until the walls caughtfire. Amazingly there were no casualties, andthe next spring the company had the theatrenew builded in a far fairer manner thanbefore. Although Shakespeare invested in

the rebuilding, he retired from the stage tothe Great House of New Place in Stratfordthat he had purchased in 1597, where hecontinued to write until his death in 1616.William Shakespeare died on his fifty-secondbirthday, and was buried from the Church ofthe Holy rinity, the same church where hehad been baptized and on the same date,April 26.

    Spelunking Shakespeares Cave

Shakespeare based his final play of 1611, Te empest, in part on the 1609 shipwreckof Sir George Somers vessel, the Sea Venture which, during a hurricane, ran agroundon the island of Bermuda. Somers is said to have discovered a cave in Hamilton Parishthat was formally known as Island Cave and later dubbed Prosperos Cave, in honor ofShakespeares protagonist. A bust of the Bard is set in the rock near the entrance tothe cave.

Aside from the plays geological and historical background, one could explore thephilosophical allusion to Platos Allegory of the Cave. In his classic work from the

Republic, Plato recounts Socrates fictional dialogue concerning the meaning of justiceand the establishment of the best regime. Plato reveals the cave as a metaphor for thehuman condition where man cannot decipher between reality and the appearanceof things, in the form of shadows that seem real. In Te empest, Prospero tellsFerdinand, If you be pleasd, retire into my cell, /and there repose. [IV.i.] Tephilosopher in Platos classic work must enter the cave in order to see the error of hisways. Similarly, Shakespeare introduces Prospero as a philosopher who dwells in acave and eventually comes to see the truth. Te cell is the cave---a dark, dank innersanctum---where Prosperos artificial light, his plethora of knowledge and books, castsa shadow of reality on his captives, primarily his slave, Caliban. He attempts to bringCaliban out of his cave and teach him truth. Yet Caliban remains unruly, especiallyevidenced by his attempted rape of Miranda. When Prospero finally drowns his book

at the end of Act V, his magical light is extinguished.

Harold Bloom, in his book Shakespeare:Te Invention of the Human, asserts thatProsperos prenuptial monologue, We aresuch stuff/As dreams are made on, and ourlittle life/Is rounded with a sleep [IV.i.],shows a powerful wizard [as] a nihilist . .. whose project of necessity must end inhis despair. Having emerged from his cell,Prospero can finally see the truth and thereality before him. Both the philosopher,Prospero, and his reluctant pupil, Caliban, are enlightened by plays end---freedfrom their respective mental and physicalshackles. As playgoers, we are called on toenter Shakespeares fictional cave, where

it is our job to spelunk the stalagmites ofliterary genius in search of our own truth.

    Education at The Warehouse Theatre

Education plays an important role in Te Warehouse Teatres service to thecommunity, and it is endlessly inspiring to work for an organization with leaders whoencourage exploration of the educational potential in every aspect of our operations.Valuing education, living in the questions, nurturing mentoring relationships - all of

these attributes make for a vibrant organization - flexible and viable - an organizationwith an outward focus towards contributing to the community in as many ways aspossible.

In 2012-13, Warehouse Teatre teaching artists worked with over 3000 students, inover 40 schools, and over 120 classrooms in the upstate (and one in the midlands, aswell!). WH touring productions reached an audience of 3200 students and teachers.Community engagement events accompanied each mainstage - and with the ForumSeries alone, we welcomed just over 270 people - from students to senior citizens- to

the theatre to discuss issues of importance to our community. WH continues toserve as a resource for theatre practitioners, and our 2nd annual Shakespeare BootCamp brought 43 actors together - from high schoolers to veteran professionals tolearn more about communicating the works of the worlds most renowned playwright. We partnered with community organizations such as Bridges to a Brighter Futureand the Sterling Community Center, and with programs such as Greenville HealthSystems New Impact, using theatrical techniques and experiential learning toencourage youth to explore issues of concern to them and to envision solutions.

It was a busy year, and we are proud of our work, and thankful for those who haveinvested in education at WH and have helped us build dynamic and relevantprogramming which contributes to community dialogue, supports teachers in theirclassrooms, raises the bar of artistic excellence for local actors, and encourages

young people to develop their imaginations, critical thinking skills, and collaborativecapacities.

Tis year, with such a rich range of plays commemorating our 40th season, we are

challenging ourselves to deepen our commitment to our educational mission - toreach out to more schools and organizations, to widen our reach with touringproductions, to provide ongoing opportunities for theatre practitioners to hone theirskills, and to encourage meaningful dialogue around complex issues.Education as a lifelong pursuit, as a transformative force, rather than a fixed goal, frames our mission at Te Warehouse Teatre. We hope you will take the opportunityto experience the questions with us! Visit the education section of our website forupdates on programs for students, educators, AND community members.
