Our Leaders

“Let all who are hungry come and eat!”

These words, borrowed from the Passover Seder, offer a potent message at the beginning of a holiday celebration where food plays such a central role. For most of us, sitting around the Seder table includes the presence of family and friends, stomachs full from a matzah-filled pesadik meal. Leaning comfortably in relative luxury, we retell the story of ancient slavery as a reminder of our modern blessings. In a modern context, this experience asks us to synthesize both the bitterness of slavery and the joy of freedom. We are told to remember what it must have been like for our ancestors. We are to imagine…k’ilu…as if we were slaves again.

I remember growing up in a home where the Seder brought strangers into our home to share in the bountiful meal and spiritual gathering. I remember medical interns, student teachers, and new neighbors gathering around our table. There were Jews, Christians, Muslims, Seiks, Hindus, and others who participated in reading the parts of the Haggadah. Each year we began with those powerful words: Let all who are hungry come and eat! And each year, our table was a physical representation of that command.

Today, our Seder table continues to live up to that standard, although often WE are the guests!

Recently, however, these ancient words have taken on new meaning for me both personally and professionally. Despite the blessings we often feel in our community with ample food on the table and fantastic celebrations for life events and holidays, this is not the case for many who live nearby. It turns out that NOT ALL WHO ARE HUNGRY are eating! Consider these statistics:

• The Food Assistance system in Michigan provides emergency food for an estimated 1,173,700 different people annually (about 200,000 per week)

• 42% of Food Assistance clients in Michigan report having to choose between paying for food and paying for utilities or heating fuel

• 65% of these families take advantage of Federal School Lunch & Breakfast programs as their ONLY meals each day

This is the reason our Social Action committee has been hard at work endeavoring to develop Project Healthy Community. Working in partnership with the Northwest Activities Center (formerly the JCC at Meyers & Curtis) we are preparing to launch a project called The HUB. The initial intention of Project Healthy Community @ The HUB includes creating a Choice Food Pantry, and an ongoing program to provide health/nutrition related education for students in the Detroit Public Schools and other student populations. We will utilize nutritionists, health care professionals, and volunteers from Temple Israel and the Friends of the NWAC to educate and offer weekend food packages for these students from our Food Pantry. We also plan to develop a weekend Backpack programs to provide additional nourishment for the students of these schools. This will provide healthy food and education for families of these students who have little access to adequate food on the weekend.

At Passover this year, the Temple Israel Community is living up to the words of the Haggadah. We will do everything we can to ensure that “all who are hungry can come and eat”! If you are interested in helping, please email me and I will add you to the growing list of volunteers. This summer, we plan to test our program and will need your time and commitment.

4 March 2013 • Adar/Nisan 5773 Temple Israel

When I was 11, I started playing the organ at Temple. Truth is, I was not very good. Back then, the Temple was on Manderson in Detroit. The organ and choir loft was waaaaay in the back of the enormous sanctuary, while the Cantor and Rabbis ran services from the bimah in front, a couple of miles away. It was like an elementary school talent show accompanying Pavarotti who was backing up a team of genius orators at a TED conference. I admit it-I gained more than I gave. And, I gained a lot. From that very young age, I was blessed to begin developing a deep and life-long relationship with my Temple and my Judaism.

As I grew up, Temple continued to be a quiet, guilt-free, unconditional giver of gifts. The music at Temple inspired me as a musician and gave me many opportunities to perform, something most of the other kids at music school didn’t have. I got to go to Israel with Rabbi Loss and Shoshi, and again, as an adult, with Rabbi Bennett and Meg. My Rabbis became my peers. My peers became my friends. I even married a girl who I met in Mrs. Weiss Sunday school class in 1st grade (for those of you with kids who don’t want to go to Sunday or Monday Night school, mention that there are benefits that they may not see right now). Not

a bad gift! Most importantly, it didn’t matter if I went to services or not. It didn’t matter if I participated in Temple programs. It didn’t matter if I remembered to light candles on Shabbat. Without asking for anything from me, the Temple kept giving.

A couple years ago, I was honored to be asked to sit on Temple’s Exec Board. Another gift, although sometimes it’s a gift that is heavy to hold. Fortunately, I have an amazing team to help unwrap. It’s a big gift. Inside are the ingredients, the inspiration and the love for creating our own spirituality, our own customized Judaism. Inside are inspirational people and programs, motivational Rabbis and Cantors, services and holidays, new thinking and old thinking, support, understanding and choice. It’s all there for each of us and I encourage you to see if there is anything there that you may want…or need.

Sometimes, we don’t even know the gifts we have. Or, we forget. Or maybe, we’re too busy to open them. Or afraid. That’s OK. It’s good just knowing it’s there.

One more thing, this will seem gratuitous, possibly annoying, but it’s my article! April 27th is Temple’s Annual Fundraiser. Come. It’s a little expensive. Come anyway. Tell your friends to come. Temple is a gift, with invaluable treasures inside, but they will disappear without your help. Plus, with Detroit’s best restaurants, wine and spirits, entertainment by Michael and Neil and the world-class Chocolate Concierges at Vosges Haut-Chocolate, it’s going to be an AWESOME evening. Oh yah, we’re also honoring Norton and Sherrie Stern. I hear they’re cool.

Passover is coming. Spring. Time for renewal. May you all enjoy your gifts, even the ones that are hard to open.

EYEGLASS RECYCLINGTemple Israel is pleased to partner with the Lions Club of Novi on a new eyeglass recycling program. Lions have been collecting glasses for more than 80 years. Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions in developing nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and continue to lend their support to the Lions Recycle for Sight Program. Congregants may drop off eyeglasses in the drop box at the Tyner entrance.

RECYCLING AT TEMPLE Temple Israel is part of the Cartridge World print cartridge recycling program, which provides an easy method for recycling used ink jet and laser print cartridges, while simultaneously supplying Temple with copy paper.

Want to participate in this exciting program? Congregants may drop off their empty ink jet and laser cartridges in the collection bins at Temple’s Tyner entrance.

For each ink jet cartridge that is turned in, Temple will receive one ream of copy paper, and for each laser cartridge that is submitted, we will receive two reams of copy paper. At the same time, your ink cartridge, which would otherwise have ended up in a landfill, will now be recycled.

BATTERY RECYCLINGTemple Israel is pleased to partner with Batteries Plus in Farmington Hills on this recycling initiative! Improper disposal of batteries can lead to contamination of soil and ground water. Recycling transforms the harmful elements from landfills into new products ranging from wheel weights to chrome vehicle bumpers.

We have collection bins in the Tyner entrance. We will collect most types of batteries (alkaline, cell phone, laptop, etc…) NO CAR BATTERIES, PLEASE.

Questions? Please contact Michelle Lichtman at 248-661-5700 or [email protected]. Social Action Programming is sponsored by the Lynn & Harvey Rubin Social Action Fund.

HIGH HOLIDAYS 2013Although it is winter time in Michigan, hopefully you still have fond memories of the High Holiday Services. As you know, we love to have as many congregants as possible participate during the morning services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

There are many ways to participate and they are listed below:

Chanting or Reading from the Torah: You must be able to read Hebrew and be willing to learn and work throughout the summer in preparation for the chanting of the Torah. You will receive a CD with the specific portion and will have the opportunity to work with Barbara Gutman to assist you. You do not need a professional voice just a desire to learn how to chant.

Chanting Torah and Haftarah Blessings: The Torah Blessings are the same as the blessings you hear on Shabbat. However, the Haftarah Blessings, although similar to the Shabbat Blessings, are a bit lengthier. You will receive a CD with the blessings and should you need assistance, Barbara Gutman will be available to meet with you.

Hebrew Reading: This reading is very short and does not involve chanting and will be read from a sheet or High Holiday prayerbook. You will receive a CD with the reading and should be able to learn this on your own. However, Barbara Gutman will be available to assist you.

English Reading: This reading will either be the English version of the Haftarah or an English prayer. You will receive a hard copy of your portion through the mail two or more weeks prior to the High Holiday.

Torah Carrier: This involves no speaking part but gives you the honor of carrying the Torah during High Holiday Services.

By the time the High Holidays arrive, you will be comfortable with your portion, as there will be rehearsal and practice sessions in advance. We hope you will consider joining us in our outreach to include new faces on the Bimah, whether you have been a member of Temple one year or many years.

If you are interested in any of the above choices or would like more information, please call Kim Heraud at Temple Israel, 248-661-5700 ext. 125 or [email protected].

Green Corner:The Goodman Family Judaic

& Archival Museum

The Goodman Family Judaic and Archival Museum features a beautiful exhibit. We are pleased to present the works of local photographer, Sherry Orbach, for our winter installation, with the addition of photos from our last Israel mission.

Orbach has a minor degree in photography, s tudy ing in an era when d ig ita l photography did not exist. She spent many hours developing negatives and playing with film chemicals: experimenting with the use of black & white chemicals for color negatives and the reverse. With the development of digital photography, Orbach was able to experiment further with different techniques and carry much lighter equipment on long hiking trips in Israel, where she does all of her photography.

Orbach’s photos have been exhibited in many galleries. When viewing her photographs, one gets a real sense of Orbach’s love for Israel and its inhabitants..

We will discuss the three parts of this book in three sessions. The first is the story of what happened and what Wiesenthal chose to do. The second will be a discussion of the multitudes of world leaders, thinkers, and religious leaders that answered that same question posed by Wiesenthal: what would YOU have done? The third session will be a review of what the members in the class would have done as described in their own essays answering that question.

IMAGINE MOTHER & DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB Tuesday, April 9, 2013 • 7 PM

Young adult women (ages 21-40) and their mothers (aunts, grandmothers, sisters, and special friends are welcome too!) will enjoy an evening of delicious food, great wine and inspiring discussion over The Midwife by Roberta Rich.

Hannah Levi is renowned throughout Venice for her gift at coaxing reluctant babies from their mothers—a gift aided by the secret “birthing spoons” she designed. But when a count implores her to attend to his wife, who has been laboring for days to give birth to their firstborn son, Hannah is torn. A Papal edict forbids Jews from rendering medical treatment to Christians, but the payment he offers is enough to ransom her beloved husband, Isaac, who has been captured

at sea. Can Hannah refuse her duty to a suffering woman? Hannah’s choice entangles her in a treacherous family rivalry that endangers the baby and threatens her voyage to Malta, where Isaac, believing her dead in the plague, is preparing to buy his passage to a new life.

ACHIM • SPIRITUAL JOURNEY FOR MENOpen to all men of Temple Israel • Sponsored by Brotherhood

TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 2013 • 6:30 – 8:30 PM

“Keeping The Fire Of Passion Burning” – We are commanded in the Torah to keep our fire burning, both in the Temple and in ourselves. Passion is the feeling of fire within. It ebbs and flows within us much like the great bodies of water around us. We are encouraged to keep our personal passion for life and love strong like that of a bright flame while living our daily lives. At ACHIM, our circle becomes the support we need to explore our feelings of passion for life and love.

ACHIM is a safe place for men to share meaningful thoughts and emotions and move toward greater strength of character. We’ll meet and catch up with each other over a small meal. We’ll sing/chant songs from the Jewish tradition. We’ll look for deeper meanings inside ourselves as we find strength in our brotherhood. All men in the Jewish community are welcome to attend. RSVP to John Shanteau at [email protected].

PURIM BLOOD DRIVE SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2013 • 9 AM

It’s always a mitzvah to donate blood to the Red Cross. Donating blood during a Temple Israel Blood Drive doubles that mitzvah.

To set up an appointment or receive more information contact Dr. Ira “Mike” Mickelson at 248-819-1235.

75 people enjoyed good food and a fun discussion by Channel 7 anchor and movie actress, Diana Lewis. It was a special evening with this dynamic celebrity. PJS, PANCAKES & PRAYEROn a chilly winter evening, young families gathered at Temple Israel in their pajamas for an evening filled with fun! The night began as families created pajama bags and decoupaged light switch covers, followed by a delicious pancake dinner with all of the fixings’ – strawberries, blueberries, and chocolate chips. Families also celebrated Tu B’Shvat by eating delicious fruits and taking home their own family Tu B’Shvat Seder. For dessert, everyone enjoyed the make your own yogurt parfaits. Following dessert, families gathered to enjoy a beautiful Havdallah service and Jewish bedtime songs, led by the Temple Israel clergy. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all!

Special thank you to our chairs, the Feld Families – Jodi, Mike, Brady and Bryce and Laura, David, Sasha and Jordan - for all of their help and hard work!

A TU B’SHVAT CELEBRATIONOn Sunday, February 3rd, third graders and their families gathered together at Temple Israel to celebrate Tu B’Shvat. The families made their own mezuzah out of recycled materials and participated in a Tu B’Shvat Seder led by Rabbi Bennett. Everyone had a great time!

MANDY’S PLACE SHELTER PARTYA big “Thank You” to our Caring Community Volunteers for their time at Mandy’s Place on February 7th! By accessing Amazon.com through the Temple Israel website link, you can help raise money for the Temple Israel Libraries and Media Center when you purchase items that you need and would buy anyway. Amazon.com pays participating organizations monthly fees from 4%-15% of purchases made by its members – the more you spend, the more Temple earns!! And it’s not just for books - Amazon.com has a wide array of products that are eligible for this program. So, from toilet paper to ink cartridges, Kindle downloadable books to TV’s, the latest Hanukkah books to New York Times’ best sellers; if you can find it on Amazon, Temple Israel will benefit from your purchase.

How it Works:

• Visit the Temple Israel website: www.temple-israel.org• Click on the Amazon Associates box found on the left-hand side of the page.• Search for and place the items you want to purchase in the cart, check out, and that’s it! Temple has just earned a referral percentage from your purchase.
