Elohim The God above all gods Jehovah Jireh The God who provides El-Shaddai The Almighty God Jehovah Rapha Our healer God Jehovah Shalom Our God of peace Jehovah Shamma Our God who is present Yahweh Our loving, covenant-keeping God The Holy Names of God Speak of: Reputation His past: what He has done Character His present: what He is doing Authority His future: what He is going to do Identification Who we are to Him Anticipation Who we are destined to become Profanity Pro: in front of Fane: the temple Taking: carry or bear In vain: make useless, ineffective and empty Profanity reveals the gap between our profession and our performance of our faith. The way we speak about God speaks to the way we know Him, understand Him, and trust Him! Misusing God’s Name WITH OUR SPEECH Using God’s name to insult We put bits into the horses’ mouths to make them obey us… The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body… always ready to pour out its deadly poisons. James 3:3,6,8

Using God’s name insincerely “And you shall not swear falsely by my name, neither shall you profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:12 Using God’s name to intimidate “Don't pay attention to what those prophets are saying to you. They are trying to fool you. They talk of visions their own minds have made up, not about visions from me.” Jeremiah 23:16-17 Using God’s name to impress “When you pray do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard by their many words.” Matthew 6:7 They flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues. Psalm 78:36 Using God’s name impurely “These people worship me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Isaiah 29:13 “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45 WITH OUR ACTIONS Titus 1:16 - those who “claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.” Hypocrisy “These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.” Isaiah 29:13 Ungodly lifestyle “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.” Acts 11:26 For our own ends David’s son Absalom did this when he told his father, “Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the LORD.” 2 Samuel 15:7 Praying but not believing Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar. 1 John 5:10 Our vows “Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.” Lev. 19:12 Give to the Lord the glory due his name. Psalm 29:2 “But for you who revere me, goodness will shine on you like the sun.” Mal. 4:2 In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His Holy name. Psalm 33:21 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
