Mozenia J. Stinson Cecille CrumpMrs. Mozenia J. Stinson, a 1949 business administration graduate of TSU, retired from 32years of continuous service in January 1983.Over the years she held a variety of positions, including secretary to the dean of admissions, assistant to the dean of admissions and records, assistant director of admissions and records, coordinator of admissions and records, associate director of institutional self-study, secretaryof institutional research and development, andadministrative assistant and executive aid to thevice president for research and development.

"I've met a lot of beautiful people," she said. "Iwill miss the place," she added as she explaineda good deal of her time wili be spent raising rosesnow that she has retired.

The same reason that brought Dr. Ceciiie Crumpto Tennessee State University in 1944 causedher to put off retiring from the School of Businessfaculty in the fail of 1981. It was "a concern forthe welfare" of her students.

Dr. Crump, who holds the distinction of servingas acting dean of the School of Business when itwas formed in July 1977 — first woman to reachthat high administrative rank on this campus —officially retired January 10. She left in the position of associate dean of the School of Business.

Her thoughts on leaving TSU? "My belief Isthat things come to pass. I gladly pass on myleadership role to let someone else have achance to experience leadership opportunitiesand to help others as they come along," sheanswered.

Camile Robinson

Camilla Robinson, who retired at the end of thespring semester, closed out 35 years of serviceto the University. The 1944 TSU graduates' contributions as a member of the staff and facultywere recognized this year when she was declared a Founder's Day honoree. Beginning hercareer as a secretary in the Department of HomeEconomics, Ms. Robinson began her move tothe business school faculty by teaching severalbusiness education courses, including executivesecretary skills, office machines, shorthand, andtypewriting. About eight years ago she served asassistant director of the business educationevening school.

Future plans include returning to Chattanooga, Tenn., her hometown, and travel to Europeand Africa.

NATIONAL EXECUTIVE

DIRECTOR OF

CO-CURRICULAR AWARDS

CONVOCATION SPEAKER

Dr. Hooks attended a reception in his honor atthe home of TSU President — Dr. FrederickHumphries. Mrs. C.E. McGruder, iocai civicfeeder, and Ms. Georgette Peek had the piea-sure of being photographed with Dr. Hooks.

HOOKS URGES BLACKS TO VOTE, TO DREAMBy Sabrina Goodwin and Hakim Rahsul

"Reagan Is the sorriest Presidentof the twentieth century," accordingto Benjamin Hooks, the national executive director of the NAACP.Speaking at the Gentry Complex

at the Co-Curricular awards program, Hooks said, "America has triedto get ahead by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, sheltering thehomeless, and the best that this administration can do Is replace thesoup lines with the cheese lines."Hooks urged the sparse, enthusi

astic crowd to vote — "the mostpowerful, precious and persuasiveweapon that blacks have."Quoting Frederick Douglass, Hook

said, "slaves can't vote themselvesfree, but free men and women canvote themselves slaves by their indifference, lethargy, unconcern and laziness.""There are those who think their

vote does not make a difference,"Hooks said. "Those who don't believe this should go to Chicago andask Jane Byrne who was recentlyoutsted as the Democratic mayoral

candidate by Horold Washington."The civil rights leader confidently

stated that Washington would winthe upcoming Chicago mayoral elections but also stated that if he happens not to win, "at least we fixed itso those who had it, won't have itanymore."Hooks quoted Langston Hughes,

"Never lose hold to your dreams, forwithout dreams life Is a brokenwinged bird that cannot fly." Blackshave always believed that tomorrowwould be a better day. Hooks said."Despite the unemployment rate

of 22%, the unemployment rate of50% for black youth between theages of 18-25, and also including thefact that there are about 9 million

blacks living at or below the povertylevel, we are still holding on to ourdreams," Hooks said.

Trying is a very important elementin life, according to Hooks. The outspoken leader quoted BenjaminMayes, the Moorehouse CollegePresident, and stated that "tragedydoesn't consist of having tried and

failed, the tragedy consists of neverhaving tried at all." Hooks encouraged the students to continue thelong hard successful struggle of theirancestors.

Hooks pushed the students tokeep struggling, hit the books andbum the midnight oil. He stressedthat college should not only be aplace for having a good time, but aplace where you educate your mindand body. He also emphasized thatstudents should take school moreseriously.

While exerting signs of a true believer, the NAACP leader said, "I feelgood about the 1983 generation oftoday, who won't let anybody tumthem around. I sent a letter in a heated exchange with President Reaganreminding him that you may kill thedreamer, but not the dream."

Ted Jones, a professor in the art department, discusses one of his artworks with a student.

LET'S PULL TOGETHER

Lord, let my sisters and brothersWalk hand in hand

Let them instill confidenceIn their fellow man

Let togetherness, be the answerThey all seek

Let them enlighten their brethenLet them help the meek

Let the dreams of strong timberThat now seem rotten

Rise with determinationTo be not forgotten

Let the roots that time has plantedAll across this land

Be nourished by togethernessFrom those that lend a hand

Let them rise to the mountaintopThough the climb be long and hard

Let them come togetherBy each, doing their part

Let them add a ray of sunshineTo freedom's desperate cause

Let them help those around themThat seem hopelessly lost

Let them come togetherAnd all give a helping hand

Let them build the pride it takesTo face this great demand

Let them be strong, and become oneLet them pave the way

Let them do what is neededTo come closer every day

Let each sorority and fraternityMost of all be strong

Let them come together, andKeep on keeping on

Let the refrain from complainingLoudly, come through

Let each of them be deteminedTo make the dream come tme

Let them bring the people togetherLet them show them the v/ay

Let them stir their confiden^Give them hope every day

Let them waken every morningTo see a rising sun

Let them accept the challengeAnd qet the job done

Let them lead with a purposeLet them climb and never stopUeu^em meet the tasK and conquerLet them make it to the top.

ALMA MATERIn the land of golden sunshine.By the Cumb'land's fertile shore.

Stands a school for greater service. One that we adore.

Alma Mater, how we love thee!Love thy white and blue.

May we strive to meet thy mandatesWith faith that's true.

Many come to thee for knowledge,Come from East, North, South and West,

For they know that thou doth offerSuch a rich bequest.

Alma Mater, all thy childrenWorship at thy shrine

May the God of nations bless theeWith gifts divine.

Send forth sons both strong and valiantSend forth daughters wise and true.

Filled with hope and dauntless courage.Motives sane and true.

Alma Mater, kindly mother.Smile on Tennessee:

May she lift her head toward heaven.Honor country, God and thee.
