WELCOMING REMARKS
By Chairman of Organizing Committee
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am very pleased
to welcome all of you to Bali, the Island of Paradise, in The Third
International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Disaster
Mitigation (3rd ICEEDM)!
We still remember the April 2016 Equador earthquake, the
February 2016 Mei-Nong Earthquake in southern part of Taiwan,
the 2015 Nepal Earthquake, and the 2014 Ludian Earthquake in
Yunnan (China), are a few of many strong earthquake that
occurred recently. Despite the advances of science and technology
related to earthquake engineering, these earthquakes still caused
many casualties and damages to infrastructures. They teach us the
importance to keep sharing and disseminating the latest finding, technology, and disaster
mitigation plan in earthquake engineering field.
The 3rd ICEEDM takes “Advancing Science and Technology for Preparedness and
Mitigation of Earthquake Disaster” as the central theme. It aims primarily to provide an
opportunity for researchers, professionals, government agencies, NGOs, students, and other
stakeholders a warm environment to share, to learn from each other, and to work together
toward a safer living environment for humanity.
In addition to keynote speeches which are delivered by some of the most prominent
researchers in their respective field and technical papers, this conference also holds two
special sessions, i.e.: (1) Update on the Indonesian Seismic Hazard Map (collaborating with
Research Institute for Human Settlements – Ministry of Public Work, Indonesia) and (2)
School Safety (collaborating with UNESCO).
Finally, thanks are due to the Technical Advisory Committee, Conference Steering
Committee, and my fellow Organizing Committee for all their work and support. We also
would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all keynote speakers, presenting authors,
sponsors, and participants for having set aside your invaluable time and efforts to the success
of this conference. We wish each one of you a fruitful conference and a pleasant stay in Bali.
I Ketut Sudarsana
Chairman of 3rd ICEEDM

WELCOMING REMARKS
By Chairman of AARGI
High fatality rate of community and high vulnerability of
buildings and infrastructures caused by earthquake hazard in
Indonesia demand integrated disaster risk-reduction efforts.
Indonesian Earthquake Engineering Association (AARGI -
Asosiasi Ahli Rekayasa Kegempaan Indonesia) is a professional
association as an entity committed toward contribution to these
efforts. One of AARGI mission is to actively promote this effort by
gathering various stakeholders to sit, to share, to listen, and to
discuss recent findings in the earthquake engineering technology
and disaster mitigation. This International Conference on
Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Mitigation (3rd ICEEDM) is the third conference
organized by AARGI to provide such platform, in line with AARGI role to contribute in
providing safe community against seismic disaster.
Many latest research and practice will be presented during the keynote speeches,
parallel, and special sessions, covering various topics in the field of seismology and hazard
mapping, geotechnical engineering, liquefaction, land reclamation, structural engineering,
bridge engineering, school safety, disaster mitigation, and tsunamis. In general, this
conference is also in line with the spirit of the Hyogo and Sendai Framework for Disaster
Risk Reduction. The School Safety Special Session in this conference would contribute to the
2030 United Nation Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially on the upgrade of
education facilities in order to provide a safe and effective learning environment (Goal 4.a), is
organized by UNESCO. I hope that this wide range of topics would make this conference a
valuable platform for all participants.
This conference would not happen without contribution of all participants and
sponsors. All the participations are appreciated and these would indirectly contribute toward
our common goal to provide safer community against seismic disaster. Continuous
contribution of our fellow committee of AARGI is highly appreciated. Finally, on behalf of
the Association, I deeply appreciate participation of all and the hard work of Bali Chapter of
Indonesian Earthquake Engineering Association and Udayana University as the main
organizing committee of this conference.
