THE TIM TRENDAugust 2017
Focus on Community
Our penchant for gathering is as old as history. We assemble for many reasons, some born of necessity. For example, we come together to mourn a loss or stand against a threat, perhaps because we recognize that strength lies in unity, and grief can be diluted by a friendly word delivered at the right time. Although these are serious occasions, they typically precede celebration in the form of a picnic, parade, dance, barn raising, fair or festival, events where people come together to promote unity, celebrate successes, look to the future, build support and set aside the cares of the day to focus on, well, community. It is in this spirit that we set aside time every year to come together and focus on our TIM community. Please join us for an afternoon—Wednesday, September 6, 2017 from 1:00p.m. to 5:00p.m.—to focus on building our TIM communities and advancing safe and efficient traffic incident management activities. This year’s agenda includes:
• Regional TIM Teams Special Events: Lessons Learned • Oregon Roadway Performance Measures Review: Data Driving Decisions NOW! • Robotic Total Measuring System (RTMS): Early Project Findings • Light Shedding & Emergency Vehicle Lighting Technologies: An Effective TIM Strategy • Statewide TIM Program Training Update & Trainer Awards: Push, Pull & Drag & TIM Responder Training • National TIM Week Preview: Oregon 4th Quarter Activities & Planning Discussion for TIM 2018

Tell ing Our TIM StoryCrazy Busy!
Our TIM program enjoys
the privilege of working
collaboratively with
many professional men
and women from all TIM
disciplines across the
state. Whenever we get
together in-person or by
phone we, like everyone
else, exchange the usual
pleasantries: “Hi, good to
see you, how are you?”
These greetings are
commonplace, yet over
the last several months a
new trend has emerged.
Regardless of the
discipline or location, the
most frequent response to
our greeting includes the
words, “Crazy Busy.” Not
just busy. “Crazy Busy.” This
trend set us on a mission to
pull some numbers to help
tell our “Crazy Busy” TIM
Story.

Installation Begins on Move It! Signage
If every driver knew about Oregon’s Driver Removal Law and followed it…
If every dispatcher knew about Oregon’s Driver Removal Law and coached drivers when appropriate…
If every TIM responder knew about Oregon’s Driver Removal Law and provided on-scene instruction…
…would Oregon’s roads be safer?
We think so!
We obtained funding through FHWA to advance TIM principles and strategies in the greater Portland area, and the installation of Driver Removal Law signs emerged as a clear priority. The Greater Portland-Metro Regional TIM Team worked to identify locations for these signs, and ODOT’s Region 1 sign crew made it happen. Thank you and congratulations to all who played a role in the placement of Oregon’s first permanently mounted Driver Removal Law signs!

Welcome New TIM TrainersAs summer winds down many of us are thinking about one last trip to the coast, or hike in the mountains or those last few chores we have to get finished around the house. We understand just how precious an August Saturday can be, which is why we were so impressed when we received interest from some local responders to hold a TIM Train the Trainer event…on a Saturday…in August!
Thank you to our alumni TIM trainers who assisted in the delivery of the training: Rocky Desimini with the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST), Ed Mercado with the Oregon State Police (OSP) and Gary McClellan with Ray’s Towing and the Oregon Tow Truck Association (OTTA). Our trainers led a cross-disciplined, multi-state group through the updated National TIM Responder TtT program. As a result, we proudly welcomed five new Oregon TIM instructors!
