Teaching for Transformation

“Education is not primarily concerned with providing information; rather education most fundamentally is a matter of formation, task shaping and creating a certain kind of people.” James K. Smith

What kind of people do you want your children’s thinking, identity, goals shaped by? Today’s political climate gives today’s parents a great opportu-nity not all have; a choice of a worldview from which our teachers will naturally and intentionally structure the learning process. Students’ identity and character are developed most significantly through the high school years and there is great potential to go beyond knowledge to true transformation. Recently, we are hearing of life in terms of “story” or living narrative and that simply means we each live in accord with what we believe – about our self, our community, our world. What shapes your worldview? What compels the choices and sacrifices you make? What gives you hope? Education as it is articulated in a Christian community is shaped by the core belief that this is indeed God’s world. First and foremost is the grounding of our teachers’ own authentic Christian faith. We are diverse and some-times divergent, but most importantly, we are profoundly united in our faith in Jesus Christ. We want every student to experience the biblical sto-ryline of Man’s Need and God’s Answer as it threads through and anchors every subject taught. We want our students to engage with the biblical call to personal faith, the community of faith and a life of faith. For this, young people need intentionally designed formational learning experiences: real problems, real work, real audience and all for real purpose. This is where knowledge goes beyond information to transformation, where identity is formed. This is exactly where the fundamentals of our faith formation and the foundations of the new BCEd curriculum intersect in very compelling and exciting ways, providing us with a life changing, education shaping opportunity. James K. Smith went on to say something more: “These people are distinct because of what they love and desire – the kingdom of God.” That’s what we strive for at Carver – thoughtfully, intentionally and prayerfully.

Grades 5-7 Mini-Elective Program

Dear Parents, We are pleased to announce Mini-Electives will again be offered to our students this Spring. A variety of electives in Fine Arts, Applied Skills, Physical Education, and Technology, exploring topics not typically covered by regular school curriculum, are being organized as you read. However, we need your help! Elective classes are lead by teachers, community leaders, and parents, and attended by small groups of students with similar interests. This year classes will run on Wednesday afternoons for five consecutive weeks, beginning on February 8th and finishing on March 8th. Why Offer A Mini-Elective Program? Early adolescents go through a period of rapid change. They benefit from dynamic involvement in a variety of activities. Mini-electives give students opportunities to take ownership of what they learn. What Are The Strengths Of A Mini-Elective Program?

Mini-electives… • help develop community and allow small cross-graded groups of students to learn together • provide students with exploratory opportunities to develop or improve skills in a diverse range of areas • give students choice, allowing them to select a course within an area of personal interest • create opportunities for teachers and parents to interact with students in less formal settings • are fun!

How Can You Be Involved? Our teachers work together with volunteering parents who teach and/or help supervise our mini-elective classes. If you have a special interest or skill and can teach a mini-elective class, we would like to hear from you! Please fill out the form below and hand it in to the school office, or to your child’s teacher no later than Friday, January 20th. What Types Of Courses Can I Offer? Some previous examples include: Fine Arts: Applied Skills: Technology: Physical Ed.: Academic: Photography Robotics Video Editing Flag Football Creative Writing Calligraphy Sewing Basic Programming Golf Public Speaking Arts/Crafts Baking PowerPoint Rock Climbing Sign Language Scrapbooking Quilting Graphic Design Lacrosse Mad Science Music Wood Working Audio Mixing Hiking Intro to Spanish Our parents and students may have exciting mini-elective ideas in an area not listed above. Please pass on your suggestions. Let us know if you can help out either as a leader or a supporting volunteer, by filling out, and turning into the school office, the form below. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Jacob Rodgers at 604-522-1410, or by email at [email protected]
