THE TONGAN FORT

The site used to be a fortified Tongan settlement called “Kolonui” and the whole fortress is surrounded by a strong defensive wall built from basalt with several entrances.

Inside the fort there are a

few preserved buildings and

structures, lawns, and the

central, elevated platform

called “Talietumu”.

The oblong-shaped platform is set upon a circular fortified base .

The fort was built around 1450 during the expansion of the Tu’i Toga Empire and it was the last holdout of

the Tongans on Uvea until they were defeated.

Despite its small size, Wallis offers a wide variety of natural sites.

Today the ruins of the fortress are a popular tourist attraction

because the Tongan Fort is part of Wallisian heritage.
