FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Friends, When it comes to movies, it seems as if sequels happen all the time now. Sometimes I like sequels, sometimes I don’t. Do you like sequels? Maybe you would be surprised to know that there are books in the Bible that are sequels. This month’s book of the Bible is a sequel to the Gospel of Luke. (you might have read Luke back in April.) This book of the Bible is called the Acts of the Apostles, or simply Acts. It seeks to describe what happened after Jesus ascended into heaven and the early church began. An “apostle” in the original language meant “one who is sent out.” Right away we are reminded that our purpose from the very beginning has been to be people who are sent out to share the great love of Jesus Christ. I won’t kid you, at times, this book can be hard to read. Peter has a few long winded sermons. There is a story of a husband and wife who lie and when they are confronted with the truth, they fall over dead. There is a powerful story of the martyrdom of Stephen. There is the story of Paul’s conversion. There is a baptism in a puddle on the side of the road. But these are stories we can find ourselves in. How many of us have ever been long winded? How many of us have ever lied? How many of us have had a life changing experience with Jesus Christ? The other great thing that Acts reminds us of is that the early church struggled to, often with many problems we still find today. It reminds us that we are all human, but that we need to seek to do God’s will together and seek God’s will and not our own. There are 28 chapters in Acts, I hope you make it a habit to read a chapter a day this month or take time once a week to read 7 chapters. Don’t forget, if you have any questions about what you read, I am here! Happy reading! God’s peace,

Pastor Serena

Nursery School News

This month of November we will be learning about the Pilgrims, Native Americans and Thanksgiving. Some favorite activities we will be doing are the making of Indian Tom-Toms, feathered headbands and hand turkeys. We’ll be making popcorn and frosting turkey cut-out cookies also. The Zoo trunk from the Buffalo Zoo is scheduled to visit us on November 12. The children are always fascinated by the artifacts the docents bring to show them along with the learning games they play involving animal identification and habitats. Of course the most fun is the live animal that the docents bring from the zoo. We’ve had various animals in the past such as a large snake, a turtle, a skink, and my favorite, the hedgehog. We’re not sure yet what animal is coming this year. Nursery School Fundraiser Our Fall Fund raiser will take place this month. We will be taking orders for Henry’s Christmas chocolates, fudge etc. Our teacher or a Nursery School board member will be in the gathering space each Sunday morning between services through Nov. 10 to take any orders or answer questions about the fundraiser. Delivery of the purchased candy will be Dec. 8 or 15 at your convenience. Thank you for taking part in our fundraiser.

Black Robe used at 160 Anniversary Celebration

In answer to your questions… the black robe warn by Pastor Merlin Knauff at the 160th Anniversary on October 13 was used by the Rev. George Knauff (Merlin’s uncle) who gave it to his brother, the Rev. Homer Knauff (Merlin’s father) and was later given to Merlin after his ordination on June 15, 1958. The robe which is estimated to be between 65 and 75 years old has been used in their ministries over the years. It was especially used at Town Line Good Friday Tenebrae services as well as in church and school plays and even as a Halloween costume.

A special thanks to Donna Stutzman for using her sewing skills to recreate the white tabs “Beffchen” which were worn by a number of Town Line’s early Pastors as seen in pictures found in Town Line’s History book. Pastor Knauff would like to thank Ellie DeFilippo and Jack Rice for rescuing him with their expertise when his computer crashed and he was caught at the mercy of our technical society. With their help, the news article got to the Alden Advertiser and the sermon was typed (He does miss his old typewriter)

Again a special thank you to the following for making the name signs for Town Line’s 16 resident Pastors from 1853 to present: Annette Fitscher, Helen Gillette, Heather, Beth Ribbeck, Justine Langiewicz, The Gene Bliemeister family, Barbara Appleby and the Harry Mandris famly. Thanks to Paul Ribbeck, retired German teacher, for coaching Pastor Knauff with his German.

Town Line members and the community can be very proud of the hard work and all the extras that the planning committee did to make this celebration very special.

Telling the Story of Town Line. In honor of 160 years in ministry the stewardship committee has set aside 4 Sundays to "Tell the Story of Town Line." They will share with us how being a part of Town Line church has made a difference in their lives. We hope you enjoy their stories and we hope that it will make you think about how being a part of Town Line Lutheran Church has made a difference in your life too! Below is the 2 final weeks.

Meta Mandris: Hi, my name is Meta Mandris. I have been a member of Town Line Lutheran since my family moved to Alden in 2000. Contrary to what most people guess, I am 25. Don’t worry, I’m not offended if you thought I was younger! I must have been the obvious choice for a speaker for my age group. Sadly, if you look around, there aren’t many people my age here. But I’m not here to talk about why other young adults aren’t here; I am here to talk about why I am. Let me give you some background. I was very involved in church when I was in high school. I was in the youth group (which was not nearly as awesome as it is now!). I went to events such as Convo, which is the youth counterpart to with Synod Assembly. I went to summer camp at Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Center. I went to National Youth Gatherings in Atlanta and San Antonio as a youth, and I have been to two more in New Orleans as an adult leader. When I went away to college, I was not as involved in church, but I looked forward to coming for Christmas and Easter and over the summers. But I don’t want you to think it’s all been a walk in the park… Like many people, I have struggled and still do struggle with my faith. How can you not? We see too many terrible things to ever be completely comfortable and secure 100% of the time. But the awesome thing is, we don’t have to be. We are saved by grace through our faith. I learned this at the most recent National Gathering, which I attended as an adult leader. So, as long as I have the tiniest little spark of faith, God is there for me. In fact, he is currently helping me navigate the frustrating prospect of being a young adult in today’s world, overqualified and underemployed, looking for a job and good insurance and planning for the future and all that. The truth is, I am scared. I don’t always have faith in myself. But I know that God is there with me, I will make it through intact, alive, and happy. I am saved by grace through my faith in God. My favorite part of being a member here, and the part that probably has the most impact on my daily life, is probably the one that most take for granted – Sunday mornings. Though it might be a struggle sometimes to get out of bed when I know most people my age are sleeping in, I never ever regret it. I come in and help Bev teach some of the cutest little nuggets I know in the Pre-k and Kindergarten Sunday School class.

Try being sad when you have a group of 3, 4 and 5 year olds screaming AMEN in your face. Then, I go in to late service and sit with my boyfriend, whatever configuration of my family that shows up, and good friends. Maybe it makes me old at heart, but I love the repetition and formality of worship. It comforts me. I may not have the best voice, but I love singing hymns. I love Pastor’s sermons because I always feel like I learn something (and I promise, I’m not just sucking up). Sometimes, I just look around and I am filled with joy and God’s love. Why am I still here, when so many people my age don’t make it a priority? The simple answer is that to me, Town Line feels like home. The peace and joy and community I see and feel here on Sunday mornings is my anchor for the week ahead.

John Wild My name is John Edward Wild. I was born on August 21,

1973 to John David and Kathryn Wild. My baptism was here at Town Line Lutheran Church on September 30, 1973. I was the third John Wild to be baptized at this Church in the 20th century. I attended Sunday school and was confirmed as a member of the Church on May 22, 1988. I also was the fourth John Wild in the 20th century to be married at Town Line on May 17, 1997. My wife Cheryl, children Victoria, Samantha, Josephine and John Myron regularly attend early service. My ancestor John Scheffler was a founding member of this Church and is buried in the northeast corner of the cemetery.

But that isn’t what I really want you to know about my story of Town Line Lutheran Church. What I would like you to know my journey into Church leadership. It begins after I had an accident at work. I was sorry for what had happened and feeling pretty bad about myself. I questioned whether I could hold any responsibility and why did things like this always seen to happen to me? Then the phone rang, and the Church nominating committee was looking for people to become council members. I thought that now was probably not the best time for me to assume a leadership role in the Church. I knew that my Grandfather, Father and Brother had served on Church council, but did I have enough responsibility? Could I trust God even though I didn’t even trust myself? But I did agree to run, even though I secretly hoped that I wouldn’t be elected. The Congregational meeting was held and I was elected receiving the only one year term on the ballot. I figured that I would serve the one year and politely excuse myself from running again due to other commitments.

My first few Council meetings I sat quietly listening, but I really didn’t want to commit any more time than the meeting itself to help out. I felt that being the new member to Church council that my opinion didn’t mean much. But around the fourth or fifth meeting I found that I cared about what was happening in the life of the Congregation and asked for more responsibility. I had learned the Church is always short of money and volunteers.

Page 17: The Town Line Lutheran - WordPress.com · 2013-11-09  · passage in their lives. There will be a special coffee hour with cake at 10 am. ... email the church office with your loved

I previously assumed that Church had no money troubles, and people lined up to help out. But I found that usually the same few people were called upon to help, and the Church struggled to pay the bills. In my first year I realized that the Church needed my help, so I agreed to run for a second term and the vice-presidency. When the president had served out his maximum two terms and couldn’t be re-elected, I was challenged with the fact that if I ran for Church council again, I would probably be chosen to become the new president. My wife and I had chosen to have a fourth child, my job required long and irregular hours, and the Church was going to renovate the fellowship hall. This decision couldn’t have happened to me at a worse time.

But, trusting the Lord, I did agree to the third term on Church council becoming the twelfth Church council president. I hoped that as president that I could just conduct business as usual, and the three years would pass quickly. My first year as president was challenging, the fellowship hall renovation was controversial, but after its completion I felt the coast was clear of troubles. That was when I was informed that our pastor had decided that his life would lead him in a different direction than the Congregation. We would spend the next year of my presidency without a pastor. Could it get much worse for a council president? In the past one hundred years only four times had this Church had a change of pastor. After what is probably the most difficult year for a Church council president, we as a Congregation called a new pastor.

Soon after that my third term ended and I had fulfilled my council obligations to the Church. I could walk away and feel that I had done my service to the Congregation. But something had changed in me. I realized that I didn’t mind the responsibility. I had made connections with people in the Congregation. I knew that I had made a difference in the life of the Church. I was proud to be a Church council member. As soon as my year off was completed I returned to Church council and was then given the honor of a second chance to be council president.

There are a few things that I would like you to receive from this story. The call to stewardship by our Lord does not come at our convenience. Making decisions on the giving of time, talent and treasure require us to trust God. If we wait for the right time we can miss out on an opportunity that can be life changing. I struggled with commitments to the Church, but decided to trust God. Can we set aside time for Church service and still have time for all of our other responsibilities? Why does the God ask for our help when we are so busy? Each of us has to trust God and decide our own answers. But I do know that trusting the Lord helped me make the decision to serve the Church. I ask you to pray with me.

Dear Lord, please help us to trust you to lead our life in your service. When we are afraid to commit our time, talent and treasure to you, give us peace to serve you. Help us to continue to be a congregation “called to be a servant community”. Amen.
