BiomesA biome is a major ecological community that corresponds to
a climate zone and is characterized by plant and animal species that have
adapted to that particular environment.

Within biomes, plants have similar growth forms and
animals tend to have similar feeding habits.
Biologically, all living things are closely adapted to their
biomes.

World biomes are determined by climate. In general we can group them according to their
latitudes. For example: -Low latitude biomes include tropical rainforest,
savanna, and desert. -Mid-latitude biomes include steppe, chaparral,
grasslands, and deciduous forest. -High latitude biomes include taiga, tundra, and
alpine forest. In addition, biomes include several types of
aquatic environment.

The Exceptional Human!Like all living things
humans adapt biologically to their biomes. In addition, collective learning
allows humans to adapt culturally. Unlike other large animals, humans have moved into many different environments.
![Page 7: The Traveling Homo Sapiens](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022081420/56816355550346895dd3ffce/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
What challenges in climate and geography do you think the early humans confronted as they
moved out of Africa?

It’s Your Turn to Travel! Each group will be assigned a biome. In your group
you must imagine that you have been dropped into your assigned biome with nothing but the tool kit described in your handout. You will NOT have
food, clothing, or shelter!Your job is to:1. Figure out how to provide yourself with food,
clothing, shelter, and if necessary, a type of transportation
2. Keep track of the skills you will have to develop to deal with this new environment!
![Page 9: The Traveling Homo Sapiens](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022081420/56816355550346895dd3ffce/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Collective Knowledge! You will now reorganize so that one person
from each biome is in a group together!Share with one another how you survived!
By the end- everyone should be able to explain how humans survived in each
biome!

Reconsider your hypothesis on the problems faced by migrating humans- using what you
know now about each biome- what challenges did they face?

Using the following map- hypothesize why humans have
expanded their habitat to include the entire world but chimpanzees
are limited to an ever-shrinking habitat in West Africa.
