To my dear son John,I am hoping one day you will command this ship, sail across the Atlantic and recover the fortune in gold cubes I have hidden at Bell Harbor on the New England coast of America. To make sure that only you will be able to find the gold I have provided clues in this journal that I know only your great mathematical skills, like mine, will be able to decipher. Follow each step carefully.Good luck,Rcrc

The treasure I have hidden, the chest of gold cubes, is worth millions. I had my trusty carpenter, Mason Wood, build a chest to my specifications with a height of 2o inches. A perfect fit for all the cubes. If you can determine the length and the width of the chest you will have the valuable first clue to the treasure’s location. Just place these values in order from least to greatest as an ordered pair on the treasure map. But don’t start digging yet, this is just the beginning.

For the next clue I have sketched myself for you to use. Draw an isosceles triangle on a grid. Start with the base and use the coordinates at my feet. To find the missing coordinate for the top of the triangle, look again at the drawing. You must be as sharp as a blade to figure this one out!Once the triangle is drawn, use the coordinates from the top of the triangle as the next ordered pair on the map.

Remember our unique flag, with its black background and white skull, flying high above the masthead. A quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides and one pair of congruent sides, sewn for me by your mother. With an area of 3o square feet, a height of 5 feet, and one base double the size of the other, you will use it for the next clue. The length of the bases, placed in order from greatest to least, will form the next ordered pair and give you the third location on the map.

For the fourth and final point on the map--and ultimately the location of the treasure, you will need this shape and the sextant. The sextant is normally a great tool to measure the distance between two objects, but for this occasion simply read it carefully, for it holds the final clue!

ANGUS DRIFTWOODI’m not talking other than to say I didn’t steal the sextant . Maybe I shouldn’t have left it out overnight but I didn’t think anyone would actually steal it . I am convinced the code on it is important, maybe even more important than you might think . (to himself) Darn! Why didn’t I write it down . Stupid me! (shakes head, thinks) That isosceles triangle problem . . .never mind . I’ve said more than I should have . Got my own theory about Captain Jack’s treasure and I’m not about to share it with you, period! I’m 70 years old and been looking for the treasure for 50 years . I’ve gone over the journal a thousand times . Done all the math . Captain Jack was a very clever man but not clever enough to stop Angus Driftwood from finding

his treasure. No sir, I will find it or go to my grave trying. But you will get nothing out of me. I share nothing with nobody except my trusty friend, Macduff, and unless you can understand bird-speak, I’m afraid you’re out of luck .

SUZY SIMPSONSo I’m just walking along the beach on the way to school . We just had a hurricane and all kinds of stuff washed ashore . That’s when I saw this shiny object . A sextant . An old one . Real old . Up at the top was a symbol . A skull with triangle-shaped eyes . It freaked me out . Anyone who lives here knows it well: Captain Jack’s symbol! At the bottom was a bunch of code . Like WOW! Could the code be the missing clue to finding his treasure? So I brought the sextant to my 6th grade math teacher, Mrs . Sullivan . She suggested I take it to Angus Driftwood, the director of the Maritime Museum . She said that if it was real she’d have our class project be to find the treasure. I thought that was a great idea.

So I went to Mr . Driftwood . Do you know he has a really cool parrot named Macduff? A talking parrot . Even knows my name . So anyway, he said it looked authentic but he would need a little more time to study it . Carlos Belmont and Grace Snapple were also at the museum and they got a look at it too. Everyone was really excited about the new find. Unfortunately, the next day Mr. Driftwood reported that the sextant had been stolen . Mrs . Sullivan was so disappointed but I told her not to worry . You see, I have a pretty good memory so I was able to draw the sextant, code and all. As our class went to work on Captain Jack’s clues, the police called you guys in to find the thief and, while you were at it, help us find the treasure. This is going to be a lot of fun!

CARLOS BELMONTI did not steal the sextant . No way . And besides, I don’t think it will help anyone find the treasure. I’ve been searching for it for years and if you ask me, the key clue is the size of the chest that contained the gold cubes . I believe I have decoded everything else in Captain Jack’s journal . Not an easy task I might add . But how many gold cubes were there? That’s the question . I’ve searched for that number everywhere in the journal . (shakes head) What am I missing? Anyway, if you still want to find the sextant I’d pay Angus Driftwood a visit. Hard to believe it would be stolen right under his nose . Or you might want to question Grace Snapple . She’d do just about anything to get her hands on the gold .

MACDUFFCaptain Jack, Captain Jack . Click . Click . Clever man . Clever man . Where’s the treasure . Macduff won’t tell . Gold cubes . How many . Angus knows . Belmont knows . Click . Click . Use the triangle . Isosceles triangle. Stupid me. Use the flag. No flag. Angus knows . Snapple doesn’t know . Macduff won’t tell . Click . Click . Where’s the code . Hi Suzy . What’s the code . ha, ha . Click . Click . Captain Jack . Clever man . Clever man . Macduff won’t tell .

GRACE SNAPPLEOutrageous! I never stole anything in my life . Don’t believe anything you hear from guys like Carlos Belmont . And Angus Driftwood! Don’t get me started on him and his screaming parrot . (pauses) Would I like to get my hands on Captain Jack’s gold . Duh! Who wouldn’t . I’ve been looking for it for 20 years . I’m sure the sextant is another clue but if you ask me, it’s all about the flag. I could never figure that one out. Unfortunately the flag was never recovered but I followed Captain Jack’s clues . Did the math a hundred times and came up with nothing, nada, zilch! Like how many different ways can you measure a rectangle? (shakes head) There’s something I’m missing, but what? Sometimes I think this whole thing is a fake like the moon landing .
