Brethren,

We, as Masons, speak proudly, and justifiably so, of the Great Teachings of our Fraternity. We make loudly applaud-

ed speeches (at least we hope they’ll be loudly applauded) about the Sublime and Eternal Truths contained within

our Symbols. We sometimes speak of Freemasonry as a liberal education, which it is. We sometimes speak of Free-

masonry as a religion, which it isn’t. But despite all the splendid things we say about Freemasonry, and justifiably

so, isn’t it true that very few of us gives any considerable time to a study of the Lessons and Teachings which we

vocally hold in such high esteem? Isn’t it true, that at every exemplification of a degree, we see and hear many

things we do not comprehend.

I am reminded of the faithful railroad employee, who spent fifty years of his life tapping the wheels of trains that

stopped at a certain division point. The superintendent of the road had heard of the faithful employee. One day he

got off his special train for the purpose of complimenting the old man. When the superintendent alighted , the old

employee already was tapping the wheels. He went down one side and up the other. When the task was complet-

ed, the superintendent stepped up and introduced himself.

“I understand you have been on this job for half a century and never missed a day.” “That’s correct.”

“It must be a great deal of satisfaction to you to look back upon 50 years of faithful service.”

“Yes, sir, it certainly is.”

“You must take a great deal of pride in the fact that for half a century, pleasant days and stormy days, in rain or

shine, snow and sleet, you played your part in looking after the safety of the passengers on this great railway.”

“Yes, sir, I’m mighty proud of my record.”

“Now, my good man, explain to me why you tap those wheels.”

“I’ll be doggoned if I know.”

Isn’t our Masonry a great deal like the service of the faithful old railway employee. Don’t the greater number of us

merely tap the outside, the surface, without having much idea of what it is all about. Aren’t the greater number of

us so lacking in curiosity that we don’t try to find out why we do this, or why we do that, or what this means, or

what that means? Let’s develop a little curiosity.

On the Level

It being the month of July, in this Trestle Board article we will celebrate the

Freemasons and the foundation on which this country was built.

The 4th of July is a very important date for Freemasons and is celebrated by mem-

bers of the craft all over the world. Freemasons and the fourth of July are inter-

connected by the events that took place on that date, which would not have been possible or would have

taken place very differently if it weren’t for Freemasons.

The Declaration of Independence was signed and accepted into Congress on the fourth of July 1776, marking the birth of the United

States. This date is important to Freemasons because they have influenced greatly the Declaration of Independence, and the founding fa-

thers of the United States were Freemasons. Five of the men on the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence were believed to

be Freemasons and of those who signed the Declaration the majority were Freemasons.

This shows that one of the most influential voices shaping the nation of the United Sates was a masonic voice. In fact, the Declaration of

Independence marks a fraternal achievement and one can notice various ideals of Freemasonry in the declaration. Freemasonry is at the

very base of the United States, the country which has allowed the union of different races and which has mutual respect and good will at

its heart. These are all principals found in Freemasonry. The Constitution of the United States was most seriously influenced by Washing-

ton, Franklin and Rudolph who were active Freemasons. Freemasonry therefore had a certain power in the making of the nation, and the

fact that the first president of the United States was a Freemason is further proof of the role they played in shaping this m great country.

The influence of Freemasonry is one of the elements that has enabled the United States to become so strong, as the nation is based on the

individual’s social responsibility and his freedom under the country’s law. The United States government also focuses on the sense of com-

mon good between all citizens, who are all equal. This makes the United States a fraternity, just like Freemasonry, and all this started

thanks to the Declaration of Independence which was admitted into congress on the 4th of July.

The 4th of July is an important date for all Americans as it marks the birth of their country. However, it is also celebrated by Freemasons

who have influenced greatly the making of the United States and have contributed through their beliefs and principles to making it what it

is today.

God bless us and God bless America

,

Brethren,

Hope everyone is surviving these heat waves we’ve been having. Talking with another brother I found out that this July it will be the 300 year anniversary of modern Freemasonry. On June 24th, 1717 in London England the Grand Lodge of England was formed. We know that Masonic lodges existed before this, however, it was not organized or unified until 1717. This was a major step in the fraternity to unify lodges in the area and was a catalyst to the global fraternity we have today. The Grand lodge was founded on St. John the Baptist’s day, the 24th of June. Four Lodges gathered and constituted themselves the Grand Lodge.

The first evidence of an English speculative mason was Elias Ashmole, who recorded his initiation in 1646 stated: “October 16, 4:30 pm - I was made a freemason at Warrington in Lancashire with Colonel Henry Mainwaring of Karincham in Cheshire. The names of those that were then at the Lodge, Mr Richard Penket Worden, Mr James Collier, Mr Richard Sankey, Henry Littler, John Ellam, Richard Ellam and Hugh Brewer.” We have come a long way over 300 years as a fraternity. Here are some interesting facts about masonry over the years…

1. Estimated 6 million members worldwide

2. 8 members who signed the Declaration of Independence were Freemasons.

3. Of the 55 members of the Constitutional Convention, 9 were Freemasons.

4. First president of the United State was a Freemason.

5. 14 U.S. presidents know to be Freemasons.

6. Charles Darwin was a Freemason.

7. 89% of The Supreme Court Justices belonged to Masonic lodges in 1952

8. In 1832 the anti-Masonic party was formed in the U.S. which carried Vermont in the election.

8. The 3rd degree did not exist until 1720’s.

9. The Masonic Temple in Illinois was the world’s tallest building at the time. It was 22 floors high.

10. The American flag was sewn by Betsy Ross who’s husband was a Freemason.

11. The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frederic Bartholdi, A Freemason and the Grand Lodge laid the cornerstone of its base with a Masonic Ritual.

12. Edwin Aldrin (Buzz) and John Glenn astronauts were Freemasons.

13. The founder of Mormonism and 4 of its presidents were Freemasons.

Masonry will continue to grow and become the light which men find purpose, unity and betterment.

LODGE NEWS

A Letter from the Trestleboard Guy

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Masonic community here at Sun City Lodge, for

allowing me to create and produce the monthly newsletter that we all need and enjoy. For the past

20 months, I have been putting the Trestleboard together using the information provided to me

from all of the wonderful organizations and groups that meet here at the lodge.

My quest for further light in Masonry has started to take up a lot more of my time, than in the past.

Due to this time issue, I am resigning as the Trestleboard Guy. I use that term, because I am not the

publisher, nor the editor, I merely take the information submitted and put it in its place. After talking

with Worshipful Master, Craig Montgomery, it was agreed that he would take over the Trestleboard

effective September 1st, 2017. I have had a great time doing the Trestleboard, and it was my ex-

treme pleasure to be of service to the Craft and the other organizations of the Masonic family.

In the future, please send your Trestleboard submissions to:

Craig Montgomery WM E-Mail, [email protected], 623-521-5580

Thank You

Past Masters Fellowship

The Tuesday, 13 June 2017 gathering of the Past Masters Fellowship (PMF) was held at the Sun City Masonic Center,

18810 N 107th Avenue in Sun City. At the June gathering, it was decided that the Past Master’s Fellowship will not

meet during the months of July and August.

At the June Meeting, action was taken to develop a Past Master’s Fellowship shadowbox and plaque to honor those

Sun City Lodge members who attain 50 years of Masonic membership while a member of Sun City Lodge. Also, work

was begun on developing arrangements for the PMF Pizza Party to be held on Monday 30 October at the Sun City

Masonic Center. More information about both activities will be released in September.

The next gathering of the Past Master’s Fellowship is scheduled for Tuesday, 12 September 2017, at 8:30 AM in the Jackson Room of the Sun City Masonic Center. For further information, contact Steve K Wieters at 623.297.6900, [email protected].

Brian Turner Eminent Commander

Our Council meets on the fourth Monday of the month and our last meeting was held on June 26, 2017. We had a great potluck dinner with lots of good fellowship. Masonic business meetings can be less than exciting and our York Rite bodies in Sun City have started a practice whereby one Companion gets up and talks about himself in an effort to gain greater appreciation of our fellow craftsmen. No Masonic resumes, just talking about himself with the intent that all will get to find out something new and exciting about our members. This last meeting featured Al Wilcox who talked about his career in flying and the type of planes he had experience with. This was great because I never knew that about him.

With social media so prevalent these days it is nice to talk to one another amid all the fellowship afforded at the meetings. Our next council stated meeting will be on July 24, 2017 at Sun City Lodge #72 and I extend an open invitation to all of the Your Rite members in the valley to come and visit, you wont be disappointed.

Hello Companions,

At our last meeting, we Conferred a Past Master Degree on Brother Ray Negus. It went very well and I would like to thank Companion, Rod Wagoner, who

is the Grand Lecturer for the Grand Chapter RAM of Arizona. He played an important role in the degree, and did a great job. Also discussed was the Pur-

chase of the new Veils/Banners. These were approved, and will be ordered. As most of you know, the York Rite of Arizona Grand Sessions is coming up in

August. If you can attend I recommend it. In September, we are going to start introducing the York Rite to other Brother Masons in the Blue Lodges.

( See Flyer in this Trestleboard ) You are free to use it if you have someone who is interested. We will have our regular monthly meeting in July.

PV DeMolay Chapter has relocated to the Sun City Masonic Center. The Chapter normally meets on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of

the month.

For July and August, there are some changes in the schedule. The Chapter’s regular meeting on the 1st Sunday will be moved to

the 2nd Sunday, 09 July, due to the Holiday weekend. On Sunday, 16 July, there will be a Roundtable Session with a focus on

preparing for the Annual Arizona DeMolay Conclave which is scheduled for the following weekend in Tucson. PV Chapter has

several boys and advisors attending the 3 day event.

On Saturday, 05 August, the Chapter will be hosting a youth membership event at the Sun City Masonic Center along with Beth-

el 22, Job’s Daughters and Troop 938, BSA. Glendale DeMolay and Squires will also be joining in the event scheduled for the

Sun City Masonic Center in the late afternoon/early evening hours. This is an opportunity for local Surprise/Peoria area teenage

youth to learn about the several youth groups that are active in using the Sun City Masonic Center. Special thanks to the Sun

City Lodge Trustees for permitting the use of the building and parking lot areas and to the members of Sun City Lodge for their

generous financial support of this activity.

In August, there is a regular meeting scheduled for Sunday, 06 August with a Roundtable Sessions scheduled for Sunday, 20 Au-

gust. On both Sundays, the activity is scheduled for 4:00 PM at the Sun City Masonic Center.

DeMolay is a Masonic youth organization for young men between the ages of 11 and 21 years of age. DeMolay Chapters confer

two degrees for membership. The members engage in a variety of service and fun activities. Service events include working

with adult Masonic groups and working in local community charity events. DeMolay members enjoy social activities with mem-

bers of locally Masonic sponsored Rainbow Girl Assemblies and Job’s Daughter Bethels, as well as recreation-

al events involving sports and electronic game challenges. The Chapter meetings are run by the youth Chap-

ter officers with guidance from the Dad Advisor.

Peoria CHAPTER 59 ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR

The Times They Are a-Changin' for Peoria Chapter, OES

Out with the old…

Many thanks go out to our Past Matron, Sister Laura Arena, and Past Patron, Brother Paul Zimmer-man. They did a wonderful job in guiding the Chapter thru the 2016-17 year, meeting all goals and growing the membership by several members. Our charities benefitted in several ways: donations of school items to Dreaming Summit School; personal hygiene kits to the Faith House Domestic Vio-lence Shelter in Glendale, Aluminum can pull tabs to the Shrine Hospital, funds to the Divine Care in Avondale, Christmas presents & household items to families in need and shut-in members, mone-tary donations to the Eastern Star Training Awards for Religious Leadership (ESTARL), Eastern Star Scholarships and to Fisher House. We also grew by at least 4 members this year and all are very ac-tive with the Chapter. GREAT JOB & CONGRATULATIONS, SISTER LAURA & BROTHER PAUL!

In with the new…

Peoria Chapter is celebrating our new term with Santa, Snowmen, Angels & Eagles. Our 2017-2018 term started on Saturday, May 27 with our Installation of Officers for the Chapter. Congratulations to our new leaders, Worthy Matron, Lois Davis and Worthy Patron, Ed Gordon. Our goals this year is “To Learn from the Past, To Live in the Present, To Look to the Future.” We will still be providing din-ners each month prior to the stated meetings of the Masonic Lodge and hope that all our Masonic Brothers will come and enjoy a great meal. Our Sister, Dottie Lou Cox, is continuing to travel thru the Grand Chapter line and we are looking forward to her term as Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Arizona in the 2018-2019 term. Our membership is still growing and we’re having “boat-loads” of fun. All Masons and their wives, daughters, mothers, sisters, etc. are invited to join our Chapter and get in on the fun! Contact our Secretary, Sister Kathy Pierson (480-563-9953 or [email protected]) with any questions.
