Meet the Pastor

We rejoice that The Rev. Ryan Mills, STS, has been called as Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Mills accepted the call in writing, and will begin at Trinity on Sunday, Nov. 28, the First Sunday of Advent. We believe it is fitting and more than a coincidence that this is the beginning of the new church year! Pastor Mills says, "I

rejoice at God calling us together for ministry, and look forward to helping lead Trinity forward in mission and witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ!"

Pastor Mills is married to Kathleen Mills, who is also a Lutheran Pastor and a doctoral candidate in New Testament. Kathleen, a native New Englander, is expecting their first child in March, and is also excited to become a part of the Trinity family and to sing and worship alongside her husband!

Pastor Mills grew up in a military family, but considers Minnesota home. His father, a veterinarian, immigrated to Connecticut from England, and his music teacher mother grew up on a ranch in Montana. He has two younger siblings, Peter and Jennifer.

Pastor Mills holds a B.A. from Augsburg Lutheran College, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Seminary, and a Master of Sacred Theology from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. For three years he helped lead Lutheran Campus Ministry at Princeton University, and since 2005 has served Lutheran congregations in the DallasFort Worth area of Texas.

He says, "I base my ministry on Acts 2:42, which tells about the early Christians'They continued in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, the breaking of

bread and the prayers.' So I understand myself as called to preach God's Word, teach the Christian faith, preside over the sacraments, and to pray with and for my flock." Pastor Mills is noted for his powerful preaching, his strong heartfelt presiding, and his creative children's sermons.

Pastor Mills' prayers and liturgical writings have been published by Augsburg Fortress Press. In his spare time he enjoys hiking, watching movies, minor league baseball games, cooking, and skeet shooting.

Operation Christmas Child

Mathew 19 14 Jesus said "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these "

It’s that time again, with the changing of the seasons and the return to regular schedules we turn out thoughts to our service project that we have done for many many years. Most of you are well familiar with Operation Christmas Child but for those who are not we fill shoe boxes that have been wrapped in bright Christmas paper with items that a boy or girl would like to receive these boxes are then taken to a drop of point where they then are sent via semi to Boone, North Carolina. At Boone they add materials to spread Gods good word in the language of the country the box will be going to. The boxes then travel via planes, boats and then in some cases pack animals to areas all over the world. Many of these children if not for Operation Christmas Child would never know the joy of the Christmas Story. We are in need of shoe boxes, Christmas wrapping paper, tape and lots of fun and use full items to fill the boxes. No warlike items are allowed, also no breakable things or bubbles. The Lutheran Church women will be wrapping the boxes in preparation on Wednesday October 13Th at 7PM in the Sunday school rooms. Please consider joining us that night we always have a great time there will be plenty of boxes to wrap. You may bring shoe boxes, or items to go in the boxes to church on Sunday mornings. If you have any questions see me after church on Sunday mornings or call me at 2033898357 or call the church office at 203 7876521. We are also accepting monetary donations. It cost $7.00 a box for the shipping. Look for an article in November’s newsletter with details about the packing of the shoe boxes. God Bless each and every one of you that have continued to support this project. As one of our Children said last year giving to someone makes you feel so good.

Blessings Barbara Mourer

S. S. Sabino 102 Years Old And Still Going

She is the last of the coalfired passenger steamers in America today, docked at Mystic Seaport. On Sunday, September 12 Seafarers & International House invited their supporters for a leisurely cruise along the Mystic River. Time stops when you are on that 56 ft. river steamboat.

You are set back a century ago, when life was a lot slower. It was an enjoyable trip, perfect weather (if you felt chilly you just had to get closer to the engine – it was hot down there), interesting conversations and a short ceremony remembering seafarers. Everybody tossed a rose in the water – a memorable moment.

What is a Parish Nurse? Obtained from the ELCA Parish Nurse Association Website

A Parish Nurse is an Integrator of faith and health, reminding people to care for their body, mind and spirit. Parish Nurses will utilize the ELCA Wholeness Wheel to facilitate understanding and promotion on wellness. Examples include: Praying with members in need, offering Healing Services.

A Parish Nurse is a Health Educator. The nurse educates in all formats, one on one to group seminars. In her teaching, she encourages the understanding to the connection of attitude, faith and wellbeing. Examples include: Arranging adult forums on various health topics, teaching with Sunday school classrooms and confirmation, giving classes on diet and/or exercise.

A Parish Nurse is a Personal Health Counselor. The nurse discusses health problems with parishioners, giving clarity and support.

The Parish Nurse is a Referral Agent. The nurse assists with the network of the health care system, making referrals when necessary. The nurse works with community agencies, establishing resources and networks that assist with the wellbeing of the congregation.

The Parish Nurse is a Health Advocate. The nurse assists with healthcare assessments and decisions when requested or needed.

The Parish Nurse is a Developer of Small Groups. The nurse may develop small group ministry or support groups depending on the needs of the congregation. Groups could include grief support, weight loss, or parenting.

And Finally the Parish Nurse is the Trainer of Volunteers. Health ministry cannot be done with one person. Christ called all to be his disciples of His ministry. The nurse utilizes volunteers to assist in the ministry of health and wholeness.

Christ’s ministry to bring healing to the world continues today. Bringing Parish Nurse Ministry to the congregation fulfills that call.

Why would a church need a Parish Nurse? A Parish Nurse is unique because it serves all members of the church community. The ministry of health and wellness can be molded to fit the needs of each individual congregation, influenced by the size of the congregation, the ages of the members, the already established ministries in the church, as well as the local community programs.

Blood Pressure Screenings Starting this month, blood pressure screenings will be held once a month in the Mission Mart after worship service. October 24 th will be the first blood pressure screening. Please bring a list of your medications to the screening. I will also perform blood pressure screenings upon request. All information that is shared during the screening is confidential and all records will be kept in a locked file cabinet. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at (203)4441539. I’m looking forward to bringing Parish Nursing to Trinity. Anyone interested in volunteering to help out with the blood pressure screenings, please contact me ASAP.
