Waukegan Lodge #78 AF&AM June, 2016 The Master’s Message Brethren, Summer is upon us, most of us will be traveling or just enjoying outdoor activities. Our lodge is looking to have some summer activities as well, check your email and Waukegan 78 website for more information. The lodge just received a pool table (thanks to WB Johnson, Bro. Mike Bradburn and his dad, and to Rising Sun Lodge 115, Bro. Jack Stevens & Michael Blasius). One of the summer projects will involve creating a lounge in our basement. This will give brothers more activities while at our lodge building as well as other ways to enjoy the company of our brothers. We look forward to seeing all our brothers at our weekly meetings and at our stated meeting on the 3rd Monday. If you have not been down in awhile, come on down and say hello. We would love to see you! Remember that you are always at home in your lodge. Square and Compass: The Fraternal Emblem

As the emblem of the oldest and largest fraternity in the world, without question, the MasonicSquare and Compass is the most recognizable of all fraternal symbols. Because Freemasons aresuch a diverse group, and the fraternity is international, it’s pretty obvious that we don’t all lookalike. We come from di% erent generations, di% erent countries, and di% erent races that speakdi% erent languages, and we come from many di% erent religious faiths. The Square and Compassis the way Freemasons have in identifying each other as Masonic brothers.

As Masons travel about in their daily lives, and we see a stranger wearing a Mason ring ordisplaying the symbol on the bumper of their car, we know we’ve found a new friend and brother,

and all the things that may make us di% erent from one another melt away when we meet asBrothers on the things we share in common.

The Square and Compass is a symbol of the blue lodge, our home lodge. In the great AmericanMidwest, where I’m from, you’ll find a lodge in just about every small town, and usually severallodges in every city. Every Mason belongs to a blue lodge, or symbolic lodge, and it’s there that we receive our first three degrees in Masonry, the 3rd degree, that of Master Mason, being thehighest Masonic degree a Freemason can receive. But there are fraternities within the fraternityas well, where a Mason if he so chooses can continue on and receive additional degrees to theMaster Mason degree. Each body has it’s own symbol. There’s the Double Eagle of the ScottishRite. The Crescent and Scimitar of the Shrine. The Triple Tau of the Royal Arch. The Broken

Triangle of the Cryptic Masons. The Cross and Crown of the Knights Templar. And many more.

Freemasons wear those symbols with pride and humility. Pride that they belong to a group whohave accepted as a design for living the lessons Freemasonry teaches, and humility that we havebeen chosen and accepted as a man worthy to share in Masonic fellowship with our brethren, and use our unique skills to the betterment of mankind.
