Things are changing fast in our country, aren?t they? Oh, I don?t mean nonsense like the new President and Congress; I?m talking about important things. The kinds of things that really impact our lives.
In preparation for the sacred, holy holiday of PURIM, I thought I would share some of the changes that will make our lives dif ferent from the lives of those who come after us. Or, in other words, the memories we have that will make us seem like dinosaurs to our children and grandchildren. Some of these are gone. Others are going. If you remember most of these, you?re old. If you remember ALL of them, you?re old and a geek!

Of course, some things never change. One of the best of those is our annual PURIM SERVICE AND SHPIEL, with the ?Not Ready for the Bima Players.? This year?s one-time performance will be on Saturday evening, March 11th, at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome, and everyone ? including you! ? is invited to come in a costume. We will have gif t certif icates for the best costumes, so be creative, be bizarre, be original? but be there!
The following day is our PURIM CARNIVAL, starting at 12:30. If your kids are in religious school that morning, we hope you?ll come join them for the carnival right after they f inish. And bring the ones that aren?t old enough for religious school yet ? show them that being Jewish is really fun. Bring their friends, bring your friends and? enjoy!
In life, change is inevitable; having fun is optional. But l ife?s too short not to enjoy it when we can.
Happy Purim!

? Social ActionOnce again our TRT community responded with amazing generosity during our annual Ner Shel Tzedakah (?Candle of Righteousness?) toy and coat drive. The Jersey Shore Rescue Mission in Asbury Park, St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Asbury Park, Lion of Judah Church in Trenton and our youth group's Midnight Run were the recipients of over 40 bags of toys for children of all ages and coats for men, women, and children. At a recent Shabbat service, Rabbi Stern stated again that the toys donated were the only Christmas gif ts these children received this year. Everyone who donated should know that they made someone else feel very warm and happy this holiday season.
Thank you to all the congregants that came and welcomed our friends and neighbors from Wicker Memorial Baptist Church at our dinner and Shabbat service. We hope you can join us as we participate in their Sunday morning worship service and luncheon on Sunday, February 26th, at 10:15 a.m. For more information, please see the f lyer located in the back of the newsletter.
The Social Action Committee is pleased that we can once again offer you the opportunity for CPR training and certif ication, by sponsoring a CPR Class on Sunday, February 12th, from 12:15-4:15 p.m. To RSVP, please contact Marla Bucher, at [email protected] or 732-972-7307. A $15 material fee is required. Space is l imited.
The need to keep the shelves of the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties well stocked during
the winter months is very strong. Here is a fun way you can help. If you are hosting or going to a Super Bowl party, please turn it into a SOUPer Bowl Party and ask your guests to bring a can or two of soup. A soup collection bin will be in the atrium for the entire month of February.
As we celebrate Purim we are reminded about hunger, women?s rights, and persecution. Our Mitzvah of the Month of March is a ?Reverse Lottery for Tzedakah.? We hope you will take a donation slip off of ?Haman?s Hat? in the atrium and make a donation in an amount of your choosing along with the Social Action Committee to the American Jewish World Service. (AJWS is an independent not-for-prof it organization that helps alleviate poverty, hunger and promotes human rights among the people of the world regardless of race, religion, or nationality.) Please send or bring your check to the off ice. We will send all the checks to AJWS as a group from TRT.
We continue our partnership with the soup kitchen at St. Augustine?s Episcopal Church in Asbury Park. If you would like to volunteer to help serve meals on any Sunday from 11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m., please contact Andrea at [email protected] or 732-946-3535
Please join us at our meetings on Wednesday, February 22nd and Wednesday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m.

?
Thank you to our member, Larry Kolodny, for his skil lful repair of our Torah crowns and yad. We are grateful for your efforts to make our Torah scrolls look beautiful.
As we begin 2017, I?d like to once again thank everyone for their support of Sisterhood.
If you joined Sisterhood as a member or attended some of our events, your dues have helped us to co-sponsor Rock Shabbat, along with Sisterhood Board Member, Carol Shangold.
Additional funds were used to support our Youth Group in fulf il l ing the mitzvah of tzedakah. Sisterhood chartered their bus for the annual Midnight Run in New York City. Proceeds from the 80?s Dance Night helped pay for the much needed repair of the sukkah. Thanks to Ron Hiller for overseeing the repair and Michael Klass for donating his DJ services for our fundraising event. Once again this year, we will be supporting the Purim Carnival.
During the next few months, we have some exciting events ? see the f lyers in this newsletter for signup information. Both events are open to the public, so bring along friends.
March 14th @ 7:30 ? Join us for Mah Jongg or bring any other game. Admission is free and this is open to the community. Light Refreshments will be served.
May 9th@ 7:00 pm ? By popular demand, Bunco is BACK! A night f il led with fun and prizes, so join us.
Just a reminder that throughout the year Sisterhood offers both day and evening book clubs. Contact Marla Bucher, at [email protected], for further details.
In addition to these events, join us for the Sisters Building Bridges events. These events are part of the friendship and fellowship TRT has formed with our Muslim Sisters. For any questions, please contact Rabbi Shira Stern at [email protected]
February 26th ? Movie Night
March 12th ? Seder Service and Feast
April 23rd ? Progressive dinner
June 11th ? If tar break-fast

News and Notes at TRTWOULD YOU SHARE YOUR (JEWISH) WISDOM WITH US?Temple Rodeph Torah invites you, our members, to share your wisdom with us by speaking at a Shabbat evening service. We will give you plenty of t ime to prepare and we will guide you along the way.
Your topic should teach something which relates to Judaism, and which you feel will be of interest to the people attending the service. We hope you will draw on your own life experiences: what have you learned from your life, or from a specif ic event in your life, and how could that be of value to others?
If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, contact Rabbi Weber at 732-409-1268, or [email protected].
SPECIAL SERVICES SPONSORSHIP Throughout the year, TRT hosts a variety of services with outside speakers or other unique aspects. Several of these events are planned for the coming year, but we need help from the congregation to make these events possible.
We are seeking special service sponsors. For $360, you can sponsor one of these events:
Eat, Pray, Learn Sacred Texting Blessing of the Animals ...and more to come.
If you are interested in sponsoring a service or learning more about other sponsorship opportunities, please contact the temple off ice at 732-308-0055.
EDNA COLEMAN ISRAEL SCHOLARSHIP FUND TRT offers scholarships to any student presently in the confirmation program or who has been confirmed, up through and including the summer after 12th grade. Money in the Israel Scholarship Fund will be equally divided among all students traveling to Israel this summer on an approved youth Israel trip, not to exceed $1,000 per student. Requests for scholarship money should be in writ ing to the Education Committee. Contact Ellen Finkelstein, at 732-972-8624, or [email protected] for more information. We appreciate the congregation's generosity in considering the Edna Coleman Israel Scholarship Fund when making a donation to the temple.
SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS WAITING TO JOIN TRT Did you know that most of our members joined because they knew someone who already belonged? Your invitation to a neighbor or friend to join you at a service is the best advertising we have. We are also happy to send our Newsletter to any interested family, but we can't do it until you tell us who they are. Call the temple off ice, at 732-308-0055, and give us the names; we will take it from there. And if they join, (in any category other than Parent/Grandparent), and remain members for a minimum of six months, you get a month?s dues f ree! Think about what your belonging to Rodeph Torah means to you, and help us reach out to others. (Besides, you can always use another driver for the carpool...)
PLEASE HELP US HELP YOU When scheduling a life-cycle event in which you would like either Rabbi Weber or Cantor Alexander to participate (weddings, namings, funerals, unveilings, etc.), please call them first. If you set the time for such events without calling, it may be impossible for them to attend. Though a funeral overrides almost everything else, clearing the time in advance may save us from disrupting classes or programs already scheduled. We understand the stressful nature of such times in our lives, and with your help we can make them a litt le easier on everyone. If you have any questions about l ife-cycle events, please feel free to call Rabbi Weber, at 732-409-1268, or Cantor Alexander, at 732-308-2311.
