A couple of Reviews and Comments from the Music Club Concerts in 2017

Maxwell QuartetDunblane Cathedral 19th February 2017ldquoThe Tunnell Trustrsquos choice of artists is a guaranteed standard of excellence and we have never been disappointed in the concerts wersquove been fortunate to be offered Todayrsquos was outstanding The programme gave a good mix of string quartet styles techniques and moods the Quartet obviously relished the accoustic and ambience the audience (of 90 exceeding hopes) was absorbed Haydnrsquos Quartet Op76 No4 in Bb major was a delight full of joie de vivre giving free rein to the humour and revealing the interplay of instruments and revelling in the soaring melodies and rhythmic vitality Prokofievrsquos Quartet Op92 No2 in F major was a complete contrast with its harmonic and rhythmic aggression and periods of bittersweet stillness The Maxwellsrsquo performances were superb in juxtaposing the delicacy and power of the two quartets Brahmsrsquo Quartet op51 No1 in C minor came after an interval buzzing with enthusiasm for the concert so far and its performance exceeded high expectations The seriousness of the music the complexities of texture and mood we had been warned were sometimes considered ldquodifficultrdquo were no bar to enjoyment It was sonorous warm rich and at times magical Our audiences are pleased when the musicians discuss the music with them and the Maxwells were very well prepared with their introductions fluent and relaxed in delivery In both playing and speaking they had a good rapport with the audience ndash so much so they were described warmly as pleasant and nice young men as if their interaction had been personal I was pleased that they were happy without persuasion to use the microphones necessary for ease of hearing in the Cathedral and as they had interesting information to communicate it was good that everyone could hear itrdquo

Ridout Ma DuoPollok House Arts Society 12 March 2017ldquoJust to let you know Timothy and Ke gave a fantastic recital this evening in House for an Art Lover A beautiful programme exceptionally well played I hadnrsquot heard the Hawkins or York Bowen before and loved them Everyone was extremely impressed and the evening was a great success overall I know they both have wonderful careers in front of them and will look forward to hearing more in future Thank all of you at the Trust most sincerely for helping Pollok House Arts Society have an evening of truly first-class musicianshiprdquo

Icaria DuoHelensburgh Music Society 18 March 2017ldquoYoursquoll be pleased to hear that the Icaria Duo gave us the highlight of another successful season We had our largest audience partly through Helena being a local girl but also because of the appeal of the two instrumentsThe two artists have a delightful presence on stage and their programme was well judged and really enjoyed by the audience It was a treat to see and hear a concert harp played in a relatively intimate setting and with Helenarsquos beautiful flute this made an ideal combination Full marks in every respectrdquo

Ruisi QuartetLochaber Music for All 26th February 2017ldquoLochaber Music For All was blown away on Sunday afternoon not with the usual blustery weather but with the wonderful sounds of the Ruisi Quartet They had a record breaking audience of over 100 people ranging in age from little ones to some very much older ones and everything in between They played so succinctly together blending their sounds and engaging the audience in a real musical embrace The Mendelssohn in the 2nd half was my particular favourite played with such ease yet missing nothing of the musical detail one would expect or wish to hear The Haydn and Mozart were delightful and their warmth of delivery was such a pleasure to experience Thank you Ruisi Fort William really loved itrdquo

Music Coll 2017 was made possible through generous donations from the Misses Barrie Trust the Fidelio Charitable Trust the Albert amp Eugenie Frost Musical Trust the Pump House Trust and the PF Charitable Trust We were also delighted to receive generous lsquoin kindrsquo sponsorship from Caledonian Macbrayne ferries

Music Coll 2017

The 24th Annual Chamber Music Study amp Performance Week took place from 1st to 9th July 2017 at An Cridhe on the Isle of Coll for the fifth time The exciting groups of Young Musicians attending benefited from coaching sessions from our inspirational tutors time to rehearse and learn new repertoire as well as much needed performance experience in our three public concerts All our Young Musicians took full advantage of the unique opportunity to develop at their own pace whilst being guided by nurturing staff in an extraordinary setting free from the pressures of everyday life in the music profession

ldquoA Deux were extremely excited to be invited to the Tunnell Trust Chamber Music Course on Coll this past Summer We have a huge passion for chamber music and itrsquos something that we are hoping to continue after we finish our studies

Our conservatoire courses have concentrated on solo and orchestral playing with only few opportunities to explore chamber music We are always searching for ways to explore more chamber music however there a very few courses in the UK that concentrate on high quality music making In this respect we believe the Tunnell Trust Chamber Course to be totally unique The tutors were inspirational and encouraging we not only discussed the music we were playing in great detail but also talked about what we wanted to explore and future repertoire Not only was every session filled with positivity along with beneficial critique we were also able to discuss career and concert planning with professionals who have a wealth of knowledge and experience

Although as a duo we were slightly apprehensive about spending such a long time on a remote island playing together everyday we thrived in the environment Every concert was a success including the childrenrsquos workshop which was a first for our Duo and an opportunity we were grateful for We met like minded musicians at the course who we have stayed in contact with and are in the process of arranging concerts with them too We are extremely grateful for this opportunity as we left the course feeling confident We were given a platform that we hadnrsquot had before and an invaluable experience that will remain with us throughout our careersrdquo

A Review of their visit to Music Coll 2017 by Agrave Deux Duo

A good turn out for the workshop with the local Coll youngsters

During Music Coll 2017 we held 3 public recitals which were all well attended and the Brodick Quartet and A Deux Duo hosted the local school children in an excellent workshop

Throughout the week we were lucky to enjoy superb facilities at the community centre An Cridhe The Hall acoustics are perfect for chamber music and the accommodation facilities in the adjacent Bunk House proved ideal for everyone Our team of local chefs providing much locally sourced food did a superb job in looking after us The support of so many local people helped to ensure that the event was a huge success for the fifth year in a row

Ruisi QuartetLochaber Music for All 26th February 2017ldquoLochaber Music For All was blown away on Sunday afternoon not with the usual blustery weather but with the wonderful sounds of the Ruisi Quartet They had a record breaking audience of over 100 people ranging in age from little ones to some very much older ones and everything in between They played so succinctly together blending their sounds and engaging the audience in a real musical embrace The Mendelssohn in the 2nd half was my particular favourite played with such ease yet missing nothing of the musical detail one would expect or wish to hear The Haydn and Mozart were delightful and their warmth of delivery was such a pleasure to experience Thank you Ruisi Fort William really loved itrdquo

ldquoA Deux were extremely excited to be invited to the Tunnell Trust Chamber Music Course on Coll this past Summer We have a huge passion for chamber music and itrsquos something that we are hoping to continue after we finish our studies

Throughout the week we were lucky to enjoy superb facilities at the community centre An Cridhe The Hall acoustics are perfect for chamber music and the accommodation facilities in the adjacent Bunk House proved ideal for everyone Our team of local chefs providing much locally sourced food did a superb job in looking after us The support of so many local people helped to ensure that the event was a huge success for the fifth year in a row

ldquoA Deux were extremely excited to be invited to the Tunnell Trust Chamber Music Course on Coll this past Summer We have a huge passion for chamber music and itrsquos something that we are hoping to continue after we finish our studies

Throughout the week we were lucky to enjoy superb facilities at the community centre An Cridhe The Hall acoustics are perfect for chamber music and the accommodation facilities in the adjacent Bunk House proved ideal for everyone Our team of local chefs providing much locally sourced food did a superb job in looking after us The support of so many local people helped to ensure that the event was a huge success for the fifth year in a row

ldquoA Deux were extremely excited to be invited to the Tunnell Trust Chamber Music Course on Coll this past Summer We have a huge passion for chamber music and itrsquos something that we are hoping to continue after we finish our studies
