THECOMMENCEMENTCEREMONY

A Perspective Purdue University owes a substantial debt to its medieval predecessors for its commencement ceremony and academic attire. The academic heri-tage that evolved during the Middle Ages provided us with a teaching institution, the university; a method of measuring academic progress, degrees; and a structure for an appropriate ceremony recognizing the student’s achievement, commencement. In June 1875, Purdue University held its fi rst commencement outdoors on the Oval, awarding the Bachelor of Science degree to a class of one. In 1903, commencement was moved indoors to the newly-completed Eliza Fowler Hall. The steady growth of the size of the graduating class necessitated moving the exercises to larger and larger facilities: the Memorial Gymnasium, the Armory, the Field House, and in 1940, to the Edward C. Elliott Hall of Music. The 233rd commencement at the West Lafayette campus is being held today for graduates who qualifi ed for their degrees at the end of the current semester. The colorful cer-emony, enacted each year on campuses throughout the world, is the formal climax and recognition of the graduates’ years of study and preparation.

Procession Leading the procession into the auditorium is the grand marshal, followed by the president of the University, members of the Board of Trustees, the deans of the colleges/schools, and other members of the University administration. Representatives of the faculties of Purdue University enter next, behind the University banner, wearing the colorful hoods of the colleges and universities from which they graduated. The candi-dates in each college/school then enter, escorted by a marshal wearing a black gown with old gold chevrons on the sleeves.

Academic Attire Graduate candidates for degrees wear a black tassel on the left side of the square Oxford cap, or mortarboard, signifying receipt of a previous degree. At Purdue, the color of the trim on the hood identifi es the areas of specialization.

J.S. Bach (1685-1750) was a monumentally prolifi c German composer of the Baroque period, a master of polyphony, and a keyboard virtuoso. Bach wrote over 190 cantatas alone. The Sinfonia is an instrumental piece from the cantata “We Thank Thee, God.” Bach’s penchant for order is exemplifi ed in the exuberant scales and sequences that are intended to lead the listener to feelings of gratitude, joy and optimism.

The works of Louis Vierne (1870-1937) include fi ve organ symphonies as well as numerous smaller works, such as his Four Suites for Organ. “Carillon de Westminster” is from Vierne’s Third Suite and has as its musical motif the melody of the bells of “Big Ben,” the clock in Westminster Cathedral.

Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) was an organ virtuoso and master of improvisation in France during the Romantic period. He served as organist at St. Sulspice, Notre Dame and Ste. Trinite in Paris. Guilmant was also organ professor at the Paris Conservatory and was one of the founders of the Schola Cantorum. The Sonata in D-minor is dedicated to His Majesty Leopold II. The “Final” movement is in classic ABA form with an extension in D major invoking a procession with cascading scales and fanfares.

Jeffry Stearns (M.S. 1988) taught music at West Lafayette Junior/Senior High School for 30 years and is retired from that position. In his time at the school he served as department leader, K-12 Music Communicator, developed and taught courses in Electronic Music and Music Appreciation, taught Music Theory, worked with junior and senior high choristers and orchestra students, and was a mentor for fi rst year music teachers. Mr. Stearns remains Organist and Director of Adult Music at Central Presbyterian Church in Lafayette where he has served since 1986. He also teaches privately and is a Visiting Lecturer in music at Purdue. “The Mace and the Banners” is one of several organ fanfares that Mr. Stearns has written especially for commencement ceremonies at Purdue.

A HISTORY OFCAPS AND GOWNS

The academic costumes of today have a history which reaches back more than 800 years. The development of the universities in Western Europe during the 12th century was the result of several influences in medieval life. One of these was the Catholic Church and its monasteries which, at that time, werethe chief repositories of classical learning. As the Church developed, monastic and cathedral schools were oftenestablished at important cathedral centers to train clerics to assist the bishop in the administration of the dio-cese. Another major influence was the medieval guild system. The members of every trade or profession, having common interests and problems, had the right to organize themselves into a collegium, or guild, and toelect their own magistrates.

Two of the earliest medieval schools evolved at Bologna, where the teachers were called doctors (from theLatin doctoreum, a teacher), and at Paris, where they were called masters (from the Latin magister, a teacher). As these schools grew and the number of doctors and masters increased, each group formed a local guild. Theword universitas, a frequently used term applied to any collectivity–including that of guilds–soon became asso-ciated with these centers of learning.

A student at one of these early universities attended classes and heard lectures, but took examinations only ifhe decided to become a teacher. The first step in this process was a series of private and public preliminary examinations. After passing them, the candidate would don a special gown and sit with the baccahalari, or bachelors. This ceremony was usually followed by a feast with wine provided by the successfulcandidate. Two or three years of additional study and the successful completion of a final examination werethen required before the student became a “master,” or in the Italian or German universities, a “doctor.”

In medieval Europe, all townspeople–men and women–wore long flowing robes or gowns. Cold halls anddrafty buildings made caps and floor-length capes with attached hoods a necessity for warmth. The materialsand colors of these gowns varied greatly, according to the wealth and rank of the individual. Since the scholarsat the early universities were usually clerics as well, they adopted gown styles similar to those of their monasticorder, with hoods to protect their heads. Not until the universities gradually began to pass from the control ofthe Church did these early drab academic costumes begin to take on brighter hues.

Gradually, the academic costumes became distinctive in style for the bachelors, masters, and doctors, the chiefdistinction appearing in the hood. After a time, this hood became a separate article, worn over the head andhanging far down the wearer’s back. When caps and hats came into fashion in the 15th century, the hoodsbecame merely ornamental, draped over the shoulder and down the back. These early academic hats originat-ed as a symbol of the master’s degree and existed in various forms: some were round, some square, and somehad a tuft in the center. The tassel in use today is an elaboration of this early tuft. The flat, square “mortarboard”style comes to us from Oxford. Ballad folklore suggests that it resembles a scholar’s book.

The faculties of American universities seem to have worn distinguishing costumes from the beginning atHarvard in 1636. Styles became quite varied as they were, and still are, in Europe. However, a group ofAmerican college and university representatives met in 1895 to establish a uniform system of academic apparelfor this country, which led to adoption of the “Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume” in 1902, and its laterrevisions in 1932 and 1960.

Purdue’s commencement exercises have been held inmany differenct locations through the years, rangingfrom a large circus tent on the Oval in the 1880s to theirpresent site in the Edward C. Elliott Hall of Music.Commencement in the early 1930s was held in theMemorial Gymnasium, now Haas Hall. Limited spacefor guest seating soon necessitated a move to the largerlarger facilities in the Armory.

THE USE OFACADEMIC EMBLEMS

Seals are common to all corporate bodies and have been used since ancient times to authenticate documents. They constituted the offi cial signatures of emperors, bishops, and corporations. University seals evolved from those of church corporations. In Europe, the early faculties and student nations possessed seals; in the United States, all colleges and universities have had seals since Colonial days. The current Purdue Seal was offi cially adopted in 1969 and retains elements of earlier versions, which evolved beginning in 1890. The seal features a stylized depiction of the griffi n, the mythological beast with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. In medieval heraldry, the griffi n symbolized strength. The three-part shield represents Purdue’s traditional aims: learning, discovery, and engagement. The seal combines these traditional elements with modern simplicity of design to form one of the most distinctive of university symbols.

The mace has an ancient history as a symbol of authority. Originally giant clubs made of iron and capable of breaking armor, maces were used chiefl y by knights. They were also often borne by a royal bodyguard to protect the king in processions. In the course of time, by the 14th century, they assumed more ceremonial functions and lost their warlike appearance, as they began to be decorated with jewels and precious metals. In 1649, the English House of Commons obtained a mace. In 1756, a silver mace was made for the colony of South Carolina; it is still in use in the state capital at Columbia. In the United States House of Representatives, the mace is placed to the right of the speaker. As a symbol of order and authority, a mace is carried before the president and other dignitaries in the platform party in commencement processions. As a refl ection of the modern vision of a truly American university, the design of the Purdue Mace embraces sweeping thrusts and counterthrusts to create a vital energy within an otherwise clean, linear aesthetic. The University seal is located in the center of the mace-head; bounding it are two sweeping silver wings.

The medallion identifi es members of the Purdue University Teaching Academy, a dedicated and dynamic network of scholar-teachers committed to the continual improvement of teaching and learning at Purdue Uni-versity. Under the auspices of the Offi ce of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Teaching Academy works with the academic schools, the Center for Instructional Excellence, and others to enrich the educational experiences of the entire Purdue University community. The mission of the Teaching Academy is to provide leadership and serve as a catalyst to enhance and strengthen the quality of undergraduate, graduate, and outreach teaching and learning.

Closely allied with maces and seals as symbols of authority are the collars of offi ce worn by many offi cials, including chancellors and presidents of universities. Collars usually include a medallion inscribed with the seal of the institution and are worn over the academic gown on public occasions, particularly at commencements. Located in the center of Purdue’s Presidential Medallion is the three-part “heraldic shield” and griffi n, the symbol which has existed throughout Purdue’s long history of University seals. The medallion, as well as the mace, was handcrafted from sterling silver, ebony, and gold, using the centuries-old techniques of swedging, forging, hollow-forming, and silver soldering.

The banners, sometimes known as standards or gonfalons (a fl ag that hangs from a crosspiece or frame), originated in the medieval republics of Italy as an ensign of state or offi ce. They have been adopted in many universities around the world as school or institutional insignias. The fourteen banners displayed represent the University, the Graduate School, and the twelve undergraduate colleges or schools at the West Lafayette campus. The colors of the University, old gold and black, are joined together in a pattern common to all the banners. The bands are the same colors as the tassels worn on the mortarboard of the college’s or school’s graduates.

Each college or school is represented on its banner by a symbol and two colored bands indicating its major academic discipline.

The Purdue Memorial Union was opened in 1924. However, a sizable sum of $400,000 was still needed for completion. With the necessity of borrowing money, there arose the large question of a reliable plan for procuring and repaying this sum. In 1929, it was deemed necessary and appropriate that the building be deeded to the trustees of the University. Through their fi nancial resources, bonds were issued to acquire the money needed for completion.

DISTINCTION AND HIGHEST DISTINCTIONThe outstanding scholastic achievement of selected professional and undergraduate degree recipients is recognized by awarding the degree “with distinction” or “with highest distinction.” Eligible candidates with superior academic records who are expected to graduate in May are designated as potential candidates for this special recognition at the beginning of the spring semester and are so identifi ed in the commencement program. The fi nal determination of those who actually receive this recognition is made at the conclusion of the semester and is based upon the fi nal graduation index.

A minimum of 65 credit hours included in the graduation index for the professional or baccalaureate degree and 35 credit hours included in the graduation index for the associate degree, with a minimum graduation index of 3.30 are required for a graduate to be eligible for consideration. The upper 10 percent of the May graduates in each of the various colleges or schools receive degrees “with distinction.” Of the grad-uates who thus qualify, the upper three-tenths of the professional, baccalaureate and associate graduates receive their degrees “with highest distinction,” regardless of the college or school from which they graduate. The minimum graduation indexes thus determined in May for each college or school are applied for graduation “with distinction” and “with highest distinction” for the subsequent summer session and fall semester. Recognition is evidenced by placing an appropriate seal on the diploma and entering an appropriate nota-tion on the academic record. Graduates who are potential candidates for degrees “with highest distinction” wear special gold and black honor cords during the commencement ceremony; those who are potential candidates for degrees “with distinction” wear gold honor cords.

Professional andUndergraduate Degrees

Built in 1872 as Boarding Hall, this was the fi rst permanent building to be erected north of State Street. When Purdue opened in September of 1874, it housed the college dining room, living quarters for new faculty and their families, and the offi ce for Purdue’s second president, Abraham C. Shortridge Also known for a time as Art Hall, when classes in that subject were taught in some of the rooms on the fi rst fl oor, it was used for the major part of its existence as the women’s residence hall, Ladies Hall. It faced State Street just a few steps east of where Matthews Hall now stands. Ladies Hall was torn down in 1927—one of the fi rst major University buildings to disappear from campus.

PURDUE HONORS COLLEGEThe Purdue Honors College provides an interdisciplinary environment for undergraduate students from across all areas of study. Graduates of the Honors College are recognized with a medallion worn at graduation ceremonies, an honors designation on their diploma, and notation on their academic record. Students complete an honors enriched curriculum and conduct a scholarly research project. Honors College graduates are noted in the commencement program by the torch beside their name. The torch is the offi cial symbol of the Honors College, refl ecting the intent to ignite students’ imaginations.

The Purdue Honors College was established in 2013 with pathways to honors across majors. The Honors College was built on a rich legacy of honors programs at the college and departmental levels. Recognition of students completing honors at the departmental level are recognized via a certifi cate and notation.

The following students in addition to being candidates for a bachelor’s degree, are also candidates for special recognition for the satisfac-tory completion of the requirements for the University Honors College.(Candidates for degree as of December 16, 2017)

PROFESSIONAL DEGREES

An 18-foot, 5,400-pound bronze statue that celebrates the lore and legend of the Purdue Boilermakers now stands next to Ross-Ade Stadium with an inscription that reads. “The year was 1891. A college known for its proud heritage of educating the sons and daughters of the working class began to dominate opponents in football. After a 44-0 thrashing of Wabash College, a headline writer provided inspiration for a most unique nickname. ‘Wabash Snowed Completely Under by the Burly Boiler Makers from Purdue’ chronicled a victory by the ‘Herculean wearers of the black and old gold.’ Never intended as a compliment, the insult appealed to the students of the day. The indomitable spirit of the boilermaker is embodied in the tireless laborer you see before you.”

The Purdue band’s “World’s Largest Drum” is over 8’ tall (more than 10’ tall on its carts), weighs 600 pounds and was made by the Leedy Company of Indianapolis in 1922. There are four drum handlers, selected particularly for their strength and agility, and two drumbeaters. The drumheads have been autographed by Presidents, governors, astronauts, and other dignitaries. As Professor Al G. Wright, Director of Purdue Bands Emeritus, said, “There may be a larger drum in Burma, Red China, or other exotic places; however, as far as we know, the Purdue drum is the largest in actual daily use.”

Through a gift from the class of 1948, a new bell tower was completed in 1995. The new tower stands 160 feet tall, and like the original, has a clock on each of its four faces. The bells from the original 1894 tower hang at the top, but a computerized carillon now marks every half hour and plays Purdue’s fi ght songs and alma mater at Noon, 5 PM, and 10 PM.

*Designated as a Distinguished Military Graduate

The designation of “Distinguished Military Graduate” indicates selected individuals who have demonstrated a particularly high level of achievement while earning both an academic degree and a commission in the Armed Forces of the United States. Criteria used in making the selection include demonstrated performance and leadership in course work as well as in athletics and extracurricular functions. The candidate must also maintain at least a “B” average in all course work while ranking in the upper 20% of his or her contemporaries for the Army or Navy, or the upper tenth for the Air Force. Commissionees so designated receive an appropriately inscribed certifi cate from their respective service.

The history of Purdue University is rooted in tradition. “Crossing the Tracks” originated on August21, 2005 by Purdue Student Government and Purdue Alumni Association. The purpose of thistradition is to welcome our new incoming freshmen into the Purdue family and to instill a senseof completion among our new Alumni, creating two wonderful memories that Purdue studentscherish for life.

By “Crossing the Tracks” to the south an individual signals the beginning of a life long relationshipwith Purdue University.

At graduation “Crossing the Tracks” to the north symbolizes entering into a world of unlimitedopportunity, afforded by the foundation of an education at Purdue University.

Thanks to a gift from Jim (ME ’42) and Janet (S’ 43) Rush, “Rush Crossing” - a 30-foot replica of theold Purdue Railroad, has been constructed in Centennial Mall between the Wilmeth Active Learning Center and Refl ection Park.

The tradition begins the fi rst Sunday of Boiler Gold Rush week in August. More than 5,000 freshmenfollow Purdue Pete and exit Elliot Hall of Music where a human chain of student and facultyvolunteers from such campus organizations as Boiler Gold Rush, Purdue Student Government,Gimlet and the Reamer Club, line the way towards Rush Crossing. On the tracks the Boilermakerspecial lights the crossing while the new students cross the tracks. The Purdue Cheerleaderswelcome the students as they participate in this memorable tradition.

We invite you to be part of the “Crossing the Tracks” tradition and visit Rush Crossing this weekend.

The faculty and candidate procession passes across the Purdue Oval at the commencement in 1903, the fi rst year commencement exercises were held in Eliza Fowler Hall. Participants dressed in regular clothes, since the use of caps and gowns for graduation was not to be adopted by the senior class until 1922.

Beginning in 1892, many campus events took place on Stuart Field, located immediately east of the Armory. Site of Purdue’s football games until 1924, and baseball games until 1939, it also housed the Purdue Circus between 1913 and 1922, and many other programs. This 1924 photograph shows the Corps of Cadets and other guests participating in the annual Armistice Day celebration.
