Competitions

Enter online through our website:

www.writers-online.co.uk

Our annual ghost story competition is hugely popular and has been won by stories about ghosts of all kinds: ghosts of children and of men from centuries ago, ghosts in graveyards, ruined castles, and wartime prison camps. What kind of ghost will you write about this year?

Who your ghost haunts and how and where it manifests itself is up to you, and you have 1,500-1,700 words in which to tell a ghost story so spooky that the competition judges don’t sleep that night.

The fi rst prize winning story will be awarded £200 and will be published in Writing Magazine (and also on www.writers-online.co.uk). There is also a second prize of £50 with the second prize winning story being published on www.writers-online.co.uk.

The closing date is 13 October and you can enter online or by post, quoting Ref Code WM0088. Online address is www.writers-online.co.uk and the postal address is Bernadette Young (Ghost Story), Writing Magazine, Warners Group Publications, 31-32 Park Row, Leeds LS1 5JD. Make sure that your entry arrives in time for the 13 October closing date, but whether you enter online or by mail, remember to include a front sheet with full contact details (see Rule 3)

Full rules and details of entry fees and entry forms (photocopies are acceptable) are shown on page 23.

Our annual poetry for children competition comes around again this month. A young audience is probably the most discerning and demanding you could fi nd to write for, but it is very important that we do write for them. If we can interest children and young people in poetry, then we are helping to secure the future generation of poets.

You have an open brief regarding subject matter and form, other than the limit of 32 lines. What is really important is that you engage the interest of your young audience.

The fi rst prize winning poem will be awarded £100 and there is a second prize is £25 with both prize-winning poems being published in Writing Magazine.

Your children’s poem should be entered in time for the closing date of 13 October and you can enter online or by post, quoting Ref Code WM0089. Online address is www.writers-online.co.uk and the postal address is Bernadette Young, (Poetry for Children), Writing Magazine, Warners Group Publications, 31-32 Park Row, Leeds LS1 5JD. Whether you enter online or by mail, remember to include a front sheet with full contact details (see Rule 3)

Full rules and details of entry fees and entry forms (photocopies are acceptable) are shown on page 23.

Pianist is the bi-monthly magazine for people who love to play the piano. Pianist contains interviews with star pianists, masterclasses, how-to-play articles, tips and advice from our expert pianist-teachers, news from piano manufacturers, CD and sheet music reviews and more. Every issue of Pianist also includes 40 pages of Scores for all levels and tastes, along with a tutorial CD containing all the pieces featured in the Scores. This means readers can listen to the pieces before they learn them! Our last reader survey confirms that 98% of readers regularly play piano. Following a re-launch in April 2012, we became a more ‘How To Play’ magazine for piano players of all ages and levels. We are delighted to announce that our circulation on the UK newsstand has continued to increase, with over 450 WHSmiths stores stocking Pianist – as well as independent retailers, WHS Travel (train stations and airports), Selfridges, Harrods and more. Pianist has 20% of the UK classical music magazine market share, whilst other similar publications show just a 2% market share. Pianist is available in both a print and digital edition worldwide. We currently circulate 18,000 copies per issue. Our circulation and subscription figures are always changing so please contact our advertising team for our latest distribution information.

LEARN MORE WITH OUR VIDEO TUTORIALSNEW! Tim Stein (top) continues his series on the basics of playing the piano. Perfect for beginners and for those

returning to the piano after a long break. Tim offers three lessons with issue 73. The first is all about ‘geography of the

keyboard’ – that is, finding your way around the length of the piano. In his second lesson, he offers up some simple

warm-up exercises and talks about the importance of warming-up (and down) in general. In the third lesson, he talks

about hand and finger independence. Tim demonstrates on the Roland HP-507. Graham Fitch (bottom) continues his Masterclass series, this time on Double Notes (namely thirds and sixths). Being

able to play double notes effortlessly is something we’d all like to be able to do. Graham offers up some invaluable

exercises as well as ways to practise those double-note sections in the pieces that you are working on. Graham’s lessons

come to you direct from Steinway Hall, London, where he demonstrates on a concert grand Model D.
